It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Lugosi dead? well certainly his spirit lives on in this movie. probably the best vampire movie since the original 'Nosferatu' by Murnau and since Lugosi did 'Dracula'. actually with due respect to Lugosi, i think this movie is a nightshade better. although i love Lugosi's hammy old piece of 1930's nostalgia.believe it or not, my brother and i saw this movie here in the southland back in the 70's on KCOP or KHJ when we were children, and it was uncut! go figure. you can imagine i had nightmares and we were both forever freaked out saying to each other, "remember that really freaky movie about that lesbo vampire called Lemora." i'd always check Amazon to see if it was available on DVD. i was happy to find out it was and got a copy right away. i was also happy to find the movie was just as disturbing as i remembered and even much better made than i remembered.personally i think this is pretty much the best vampo movie ever made and superior to the original 'Dracula' with Lugosi, and better than the works of Anne Rice. and i do happen to like Lugosi and Rice very much. i just happen to think this film is that good. the lushly beautiful photography, and the more than adequate 1930's period recreation, hardly reveal the limited budget.this also features one of the creepiest children's rhymes i've ever heard. the one where the old witch woman sings,"will i look like that when i am dead...oohh". makes me shudder and shiver.strange personal footnote. didn't even remember Cheryl Smith Died on oct.25th. when i decided to put the movie on to watch it with my brother it happened to be that exact same date and i didn't even intend that. swear on a stack of Christian Bibles. coincidence? or unconsciously in the back of my mind? who knows? anyway it kind of scared me.

A young girl (Cheryl Smith) who returns to her hometown to see her dying father finds herself being drawn into a web of vampirism and witchcraft. All I can say about this film is that it strikes me as the sinister version of "Alice in Wonderland". A young girl enters a world she is unfamiliar with, with people and places that are far outside the norm and outside of logic. The idea of their being the higher, classy vampires and the lower, more monstrous vampires was an interesting idea and one you rarely see. In fact, no other examples immediately come to mind. This does make some level of sense.Of course, the film also has a slight "erotic" side to it (very slight, but still there). And there is a strange use of religion that probably deserves an essay all its own, but is not going to be getting it from me.

With a title, Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural, you'd think that Lemora would be the child. Well, you'd be wrong. And I'd be wrong. The story revolves around a young girl who after learning the whereabouts of her father, journeys to find him. All the while running into weirdo characters, werewolves and vampires. Holy moly! First off, I can't explain how happy I am that this movie delivered. I truly wasn't expecting a movie that was this good. With a seriously eerie atmosphere, chilling sound effects and music and a plethora of creepy characters and monsters, this flick easily rose above all my expectations. My only gripe with this flick was the lead child. Her acting was very wooden, but at the same time, her lack of character kinda worked. It made her feel like innocence personified. But, at the same time, felt kinda crappy....weird. Another strange thing about the girl in this movie is that she appeared to be very young, like under 16, but you actually see her boob and she's involved in some pretty erotic scenes. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing even slightly "hot and heavy". But I can relax, after being turned on by this young girl, I found out she was 19. I also found out she became a popular exploitation actress, which explains the weak acting. I kid!! Also another (dumb) thought occurred to me, there are scenes of vampires and werewolves (called beasts in this movie) fighting. I wonder if this film was the first to have that battle shown on film. If anyone does know the answer to this, please tell me. Another thought, Underworld sucked.Time and time again I shrug my shoulders at films that I hear only positive things about. And time and time again I kick myself for not checking out the film when I first heard about it. Don't mess up like me, if you have the chance to check out Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural, do so, it's a classic. 8.5 outta 10

The film is set in Georgia of the 1920s. Sweet innocent 13 year old Lila Lee (Cheryl Smith) goes to visit her sick father. Unknown to her it's a trap all set up by Lemora (Lesley Gilb) a woman vampire with distinct lesbian tendencies. Will Lila Lee fall into her clutches or escape? I caught this originally on late night TV many years ago. The print was faded, in terrible condition and (slightly) edited--but I knew I was seeing something different. I didn't see the whole thing--I was exhausted (it started at 1 am) and I couldn't stay awake...but it never left me. Now it's finally available in a truly stunning transfer by Synapse. The picture and sound are crystal clear and the colors very vivid. The film is very creepy--there are a LOT of sexual innuendos thrown at Lila at the beginning (but it IS needed for the story). The lesbian touches are there but not explicit--this movie is very PG (no blood, gore, nudity or swearing). Still they come through and actually help the movie. The low budget this film was made on shows often but it works in the films favor. There's atmospheric lighting, eerie sounds, creepy settings and a nonstop feeling of dread. Also Gilb is VERY imposing as Lemora. Despite the rating this is an adult movie--as others have said--a fairy tale for adults. There are plenty of things wrong with this however. The script wanders all over the place (but then fairy tales do too), the ending drags a bit and the acting is terrible all around (Smith is bland and Gilb's acting is SO bad I was giggling at times). Still, despite all that it works. A one of a kind vampire movie. Not for everybody. I give it a 9.
