Crappy film
Absolutely the worst movie.
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
Notice the magic police car that changes from 72 Chevy Impala to Ford LTD during the police chase with the dirt motorcycles. The Sheriff takes of in a Chevy and catches them in a Ford. ROTFL Either it was a serious mess up, or as I suspect; they were so low budget they only had two squad cars that when one car wrecked they had to use the only other car they had? Funny to watch though.
Very cheap to look at and some of the characters decisions were really wrong feeling. The effects used on the Gargoyles were terrible. Sound was weak at best. It wasn't very original. I slightly liked the idea but the execution was totally wrong. The monsters looked and acted ridiculous. It didn't manage to achieve what it set out to do - scare. I managed to watch it. I didn't think that it was very good. It had a slight seventies b-movie charm but was painfully bad with very few redeeming features.
Gargoyles is not a down right horrible film - it does have some entertainment value for fans of B-films, sci-fi and horror. I didn't find the movie scary at all but it did entertain me - and that is what counts. It's not a top quality film but the Gargoyles look really cool... pre-CGI and for a low budget made for TV movie I'm pleased with their look. Pretty menacing looking and elaborate considering. The story is basic - really not all that cheesy but it's certainly not a "deep" type of story. The movie is what I expected it to be - so I wasn't completely disappointed with it.This is pretty good movie to kick back with on an otherwise boring afternoon if you like these type of films.5/10
A one of a kind TV movie. Cornel Wilde is an archaeologist who, along with daughter Jennifer Salt, comes across a race of gargoyles in the American southwest. The gargoyles, led by nasty Bernie Casey, plan on wiping out the human race. It's not necessarily scary, but it is very creepy thanks to some clever direction by Bill Norton, which includes a lot of shots of the monsters in slow-motion. Wilde, never the most natural actor, is pretty stiff here and Salt isn't the most electrifying presence. She's also dressed in the most inappropriately sexy way considering the goings on here. Still, it's never really silly and certainly not campy. The supporting cast includes a great turn by Grayson Hall as a drunken motel owner. The make-up, which is stellar, was worked on by Stan Winston. Norton also directed the unsung feature film CISCO PIKE the same year. The two films could not be further apart in content.
