Crash Dive
A US Navy submarine, the USS Corsair, is operating in the North Atlantic, hunting German merchant raiders that are preying on Allied shipping. Its new executive officer, Lt. Ward Stewart, has been transferred back into submarines after commanding his own PT boat. At the submarine base in New London, Connecticut, he asks his new captain, Lt. Cmdr. Dewey Connors, for a weekend leave to settle his affairs before taking up his new assignment. On a train bound for Washington D.C., Stewart accidentally encounters New London school teacher Jean Hewlett and her students. Despite her initial resistance to his efforts, he charms her and they fall in love.

It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
What starts off as a promising buddy war film moves quickly into romantic comedy with a touch of "Love Affair" thrown in. After becoming a hero rescuing Americans stranded at sea on a U-Boat, Tyrone Power is given a commanding officer post on a submarine where he slowly becomes the best friend of his superior Dana Andrews. They build a great affection for each other as they sink a Nazi war ship but are unaware that they both love the same woman (Anne Baxter) who, at first antagonistic towards Power, slowly comes to love him. This leads into some comical mishaps as Power basically stalks Baxter to win her affections, even introducing her to his feisty granny (the always winning Dame May Witty, basically playing the Maria Ouspenskaya role from 1939's "Love Affair"). Before they set sail on a major mission, Andrews and Power learn the truth. Andrews refuses to deal with their personal conflict while on assignment, and when the mission comes to a head, it will take all their loyalty to the mission to fight not only for the cause of freedom, but for their friendship as well. This pleasant color war drama with comic overtones is filled with some truly amazing special effects, most notably those concerning the final mission. There are some pleasant supporting performances, most memorably James Gleason as an aging crew member with a bad ticker and Ben Carter as his black pal who is silently aware of his issue and stands by him throughout the mission. The presence of a black man on the submarine is a nice touch during this pre-civil rights era, although when the crew members begin putting on black make-up to disguise themselves, Carter is stuck with a rather degrading remark concerning his own skin color. The romantic triangle between Andrews, Baxter and Power is the major storyline, reminding movie audiences of the 1940's just what they were fighting for, but it makes no sense that Baxter, a schoolteacher, would lead both men on for so long before making a decision.Still, when you've got two handsome leading men like Andrews and Power working together (you really root for their friendship to survive such a ridiculous conflict), the beautiful Baxter and some terrific technical effects, you can get over that, as well as the silly propaganda message thrown in right at the end that just comes out of left field in a jarring manner.
I really enjoyed this movie and I like what other reviewers have said. particularly the reports on the history of US Navy shipping at the time and also some of the goofs. I did enjoy the acting and interesting plot. I felt like the scenes of the Depth charges being dripped was a bit amateurish. the splashes of the cans told you it was small cans in a tub or something. Good movie overall great action at the German occupied Island shipping base. The movie must have been good as it kept my attention throughout, that always says something. I have a feeling I bought this movie from Amazon when I saw it advertised in the same area of another War/ Submarine Movie I was looking for. Glad I bought it.
Crash Dive is a typical WWII propaganda film with a stirring musical score by Hugo Friedhofer that prompts any young man to want to enlist in the navy. The cast is uniformly good, especially Tyrone Power as he cleverly tries to woo a reluctant Anne Baxter. Sub skipper Dana Andrews always excelled in military roles. The plot borders on the ridiculous. A German naval base in the north Atlantic- where? An American submarine conducting offensive operations in the Atlantic would likely have been attacked on sight by Allied forces who would naturally assume all subs in the Atlantic were German (such was the fate of one U.S. sub which left New London for the Panama Canal and was never heard from again). Good action scenes for a film of this genre with many of the clichés that would be repeated in other WWII submarine films.
I was working at Wright-Patterson Airforce Base during the war, and I saw this movie three times. As a young gal, I was enthralled with Tyrone Powers and Dana Andrews in their handsome uniforms. I was in the purchasing department at Wright. I worked for Col. McAlpin.
