At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

Finally after all of these years watched the 70's horror film "What Have You Done to Solange" and I must say it entertains with interest and suspense as it's a drama film of blood mixed with an erotic feel of sex and secrets!A sexually sadistic killer starts to prey and kill young girls at a Catholic college and one of the killings has a witness only this stirs up drama and a cat and mouse search game by the police. Many of the scenes are erotic showing the breast of young girls and the killer has an MO of taping the victims mouth with white duct tape before the private part knife carving! Need I say more check out this international B type horror classic as it will chill with an erotic feel and open secrets.

This film has many strengths, it's well photographed and has a very good score by Morricone. The plot twists get a little to twisty--though that's part of the fun of giallo's and the final answer as to what happened to Solange is memorably nasty. It's also well produced, the dubbing is pretty good and much of it looks or at least feels like it's really taking place in England--though the cast doesn't look very British. So what's wrong with this picture? Well the lead character is a lecherous teacher and the movie itself seems to wallow a bit in scenes of naked school girls in the shower. Though you can get a exploitation thrill from this you don't really identify with any of the characters. The detective gets more screen time but isn't interesting and doesn't have any emotional involvement in solving the crimes. So you'd expect our lech lead "wrong man" character to learn or get more involved in solving all this--and he sort of does but mostly doesn't. Some of this can be actor Testi's though he's less stiff here than in other films. The film also doesn't build as well as it should and as it starts to explain what's going on it slows down and gets convoluted--in other words it has a slow middle. There is one silly scene with an over the top witness to a crime and lot's of Catholic hatred and confusion to liven things up.Film has some style, helped by the music, but the style neither overcomes nor expresses all the elements of the film. It's an interesting film that isn't all that compelling.

What Have You Done to Solange? (1972) *** (out of 4) Teacher Enrico Rosseni (Fabio Testi) is on a small boat with his student/lover Elizabeth (Cristina Galbo) when she notices someone with a knife. Enrico doesn't believe her but the next morning on the radio he hears about a student's brutal murder. Before long more students are being found stabbed in their private parts so the teacher sets out to find out who is doing it.WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE? has one of the best reputations of any giallo that wasn't directed by Mario Bava or Dario Argento. The film has gained a large cult following over the years due to some bizarre murder scenes and its rather dark story. There's no doubt that this is a very entertaining movie for the most part but at the same time there are certainly some flaws. The biggest flaw is its extremely slow pacing, which makes the film seem extremely long at 107 minutes. With the pacing issue aside, the film itself is quite memorable on several grounds. For starters, the Catholic setting is certainly put to great use as we have some religious stuff going on in regards to the murders and it just adds an all around creepy vibe. Another good thing are a couple twists that I certainly won't spoil but they will certainly catch you off guard. Yet another enjoyable thing is how perverted the film actually is. The knife to the private parts is a rather uneasy thing to see and director Massimo Dallamano certainly uses it to great effect.Another major plus that the film has going for it are the performances including Testi in the lead role. I thought he had a very commanding presence on the screen and there's no question that his strong performance helped keep you glued into everything going on. I also thought Galbo was very good in her role of the student who finds herself in over her head. The supporting performances are all good and we also get Camille Keaton in her first role.As I said, I really had a major issue with the pacing of the film but outside of this the film manages to be entertaining and it certainly works as a mystery.

I don't know when Edgar Wallace started writing, but the first of his stories to make it to the screen was in 1915. He died in 1932, and they are still making films based on his stories - King Kong being one of the latest. This is another of his stories. He specialized in mysteries. It is a good introduction to Giallo for novices. The film is dubbed, but, since it was filmed in English, you can't tell. And, it has one of Ennio Morricone's best scores. It has everything: sex, an after gym class shower scene, religion, murder. The murderer is targeting students at a Catholic girls school, and one of the teachers, Rosseni (Fabio Testi), is a prime suspect, especially after a girl is killed in his hideaway apartment. He has to find the killer, before he offs his favorite student, Elizabeth (Cristina Galbó).Police inspector Barth (Joachim Fuchsberger) is dogged in pursuit of the truth, and what he finds is shocking.Outstanding Giallo, and some really good acting.
