The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Up until watching A Millionaire's First Love, Hachi was quite possibly the saddest movie I had the privilege of viewing. This South Korean romantic drama however may take home the prize of being the first feature that reduced me to tears for a majority of its story. Those who have seen My Sassy Girl may remember the moment Gyeon-woo explained to the Girl how South Koreans appreciate melodrama. Clearly there is some truth behind this logic, and A Millionaire's First Love contains a rich assortment of powerfully beautiful and sad moments that will certainly cause a number of intense emotions to flourish. More powerful than A Walk to Remember, and more romantic than Here on Earth, A Millionaire's First Love is a story of romance, life, family, and the choices that all of us make.During the opening scene though, you could be forgiven for thinking you stumbled into a martial arts film by accident with the fight that dominates the screen. This however serves the purpose to show how the reckless Kang Jae-kyung (Hyun Nin), a soon to be millionaire who is as pretentious as he is arrogant, spends much of his time. His friends and acquaintances who occupy this spoiled existence with him are largely unexplored, despite appearing on more than one occasion, and the connection between he and a rich young woman who believes herself to be his paramour is strangely peculiar, in that not even the characters appear capable of comprehending this subplot. At the same time though we are introduced to Choi Eun-hwan (Yeon-hee Lee), who lives a very different existence. Emotional, but at the same time strong in spirit, she doesn't have the luxurious upbringing that Jae-kyung has been gifted. Despite this, both of these characters coincidentally meet.Originally difficult to follow due to the lack of background the audience is provided, a thorough back-story is eventually revealed, which magnifies the intense feelings that continuously tug at the viewer's heart strings. Each of the images, behaviors and items have a place in the story, these been purposefully revealed in the beginning stages of the film, only to be later put in perspective.Jae-kyung's life of luxury is however thwarted by none other than his deceased grandfather, whose inheritance he was destined to receive. Informed by his lawyer that he needs to graduate from a predetermined school before receiving the wealthy entitlement, he finds that all he had taken for granted is denied to him. Sent to a school far from civilization, he discovers Eun-hwan, the young woman he met in the city, is a student there as well, their relationship being the focus of the film.Through her, Jae-kyung is able to acquire for himself an appreciation for life's beauty, entering a world where ten dollars is capable of purchasing more happiness than he has experienced in a lifetime. These tender moments, combined with the brilliant acting by the leads, who demonstrate an exceptional emotional range, the in-depth writing of the story, and the feature's extraordinary direction, makes A Millionaire's First Love a film that is as poetic as it is memorable.Although there may be room to argue that some of the plot is exaggerated and overacted, for the most part, A Millionaire's First Love is as terribly sad as it is incalculably beautiful. I personally spent over half of this film in a state of tears, with over a dozen tissues been sacrificed to stem the flow of liquid. To put it simply, if you take umbrage at films that may reduce you to an emotional mess, you might want to consider avoiding this feature.Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always honestly romantic and charming, those who appreciate South Korean drama, or romantic films in general, will find this is one feature that simply must be included in their collection.

"A Millionaire's First Love". Sounds sort of cheesy, right? That's what I was thinking when I friend recommend that I watch this movie. I've never really been into that whole "forgein" movie cliché, even though most of my friends are die-hard "My Sassy Girl" fans and can't go a day without watching at least 5 episodes of Fruits Basket. When I sat down to watch the DVD, it was 11:00 PM, and I'll admit, I was sort of putting off watching the movie- I just didn't feel like going through the headache of watching the film and reading the subs at the same time. The first 30 minutes into the film, I became engrossed- the arrogant- yet hot- rich boy made me want to slap some sense into him and kiss his cheek at the same time. When Eue was introduced, I immediately fell in love with how cute and sweet she was. The acting was believable, and the process of Jae and Eue falling in love left me feeling melt-y and gooey inside. In my head, I pictured a happy ending, with a wedding and flowers and happy little animals everywhere, like something out of a Disney movie. So when the course of the movie was altered when Eue admitted that being with Jae made her heart condition worse, the tears started flowing. It was so sudden- one minute, I'm just watching a sweet movie about love, and the next moment, I'm crying so hard I'm starting to heave. I didn't notice I was crying until the very end, when Jae is at the graduation ceremony, and in Eue's chair, lays a bunch of flowers. I've never cried so hard during a movie, except during the Titanic, and sometimes even then do I finish the movie dried-eyed. This movie is defiantly for the romantic-at-heart. Since watching this movie, I've gone on seeing such movies as "My Sassy Girl" and "200 Pounds Beauty". I will always love this movie, and recommend to everyone. I must admit, that sometimes, when I'm alone in my apartment, I'll pop in Millionaire's First Love, and cry and laugh and stare-longly-at-Jae to my heart's content, but the first experience of watching this movie will always be the best and most unique.

Jae-kyung had turned 18 and he is eligible to inherit his late grandfather's vast amount of fortunes. He went out with his friends and became arrogant in his ways. But, there was a catch in the will his grandfather left behind. He has to graduate from a small high school in the countryside because if that did not happened, he cannot totally inherit the entire fortune. Naturally it drove Jae-kyung mad. For someone who has quite an amount of money in his bank account, it was like a slap in the face. When he arrived at the place, he then realised how rural it was. The behaviour, mannerisms of the local people astounded him. There, he met the girl whom he actually once met many years ago when they were younger. It's his fellow classmate at his new school - Eun-hwan. He soon found out she had an illness which could not be cured. But Eun-hwan put on a brave face and pretended that nothing had happened and went on with her part-time job at the gas station and juggling with her studies at the same time. It was during those times Jae-kyung realises how much he likes her.It might be a sappy love story as the summary title has stated, but it's just a beautiful story which will move one who is watching it.

This movie exists for the sole purpose of following Hyeon Bin's face with a camera. And while it is indeed a thing of no small beauty, it's unfortunately not enough to sustain 116 minutes of film. And what of the plot, such as it is? Young rich brat leads dissolute life, doesn't go to school, drinks too much, gets into fights, throws his weight around, then turns 18 and inherits a fortune from his dead grandfather, but on one condition: graduate from high school or you get nothing. So he goes back to school, and doesn't he look nice in his uniform! The school is somewhere in the countryside, there are only half a dozen kids in a class which resembles a casting director's idea of special ed. Within about a minute, rich brat falls in love with the petrol station attendant-substitute teacher-dying girl, and overnight becomes A Nice Guy. Oh, did I mention that he, and she, are Orphans? And there's an orphanage-saving scheme thrown in for pathos? It's so stupid and underwritten it doesn't really deserve a review. It's a shocking mish-mash of styles. The script is woeful and embarrassing. The acting is at times unbelievably bad. There is no effort made to make the plot or the relationships even slightly realistic. The tragedy of it is, Hyeon Bin can do so much more than just look good. In two different mini-series, Ireland and My name is Kim Samsoon, he proved he is capable of quite a bit. One hopes his movie career doesn't start and finish with this piece of swill. So dreadful it gets 3/10 - 2 for Hyeon Bin's face, and 1 for his hair.
