There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

It was certainly a very risky experiment completely apart from the mainstream. Extra Marital affair has always been very overrated in our country. Maybe that is why, people in our country not only did not like the movie but also criticized it very badly. But I am sure, while making the movie, Johor might not have had any expectations of good reviews from Indian public and critics. Nevertheless, the movie did a fantastic performance in the overseas market. It was also received positively there. Even today, after 8 years of its release, it is still the 7th Highest grossing movie in the overseas market. I personally loved the movie very much. Though it was too high on drama. I have always admired KJO's movies. But KANK is very much close to my heart. I know this is too late to write this review. But I watched the movie yesterday on TV. Not that this was the first time I watched it. My dad had shown me the movie on the first day first show of its release in 2006. But as I was too small then, I couldn't understand the movie. But now, when I am 18, I understood how intelligent the movie is. Hats off to Karan!

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is a great movie. I do not think I can find a single flaw in this movie.Firstly, the film has an excellent storyline and is very well scripted. It is not a typical love story in my opinion. I like that Karan Johar made a different kind of film. KANK explores the themes of adultery, one theme which I don't think has really been highlighted in any major Bollywood movie before.Secondly, the acting by all of the cast is terrific. I was particularly pleased with Shahrukh's acting (as is the case with most films I see of his). All the other cast acted well too.Thirdly, I think the songs in KANK are all really good. I mean I could listen to them everyday.Overall, I am glad Karan Johar made KANK. It was a new kind of film for its time and I think more films like this should be made.

Had this film been made by another company such as the Bhatts or even UTV, I do not think KANK would have gotten the flack it did when it released. The biggest fault of this film is not that it has flawed content, it is more that the film is made by Karan Johar. At one hand, we have people criticize Karan for making fantasy, candy-floss type movies and when he comes up with something different here, we still criticize him for making a "cheap" film. Really? Make up your damn mind.Ignoring the heavy unnecessary criticism towards the film, I'll step up and say KANK is a brilliant take on infidelity and human behavior. It's a great take on true love. Above all, KANK makes a simple statement in a complex story - The only reason to marry someone is that you truly love them.KANK is a bold film and there is no doubt. The film not only features the lead pair being married and engaging in an extra marital affair, but has every main character being gray. Every character has a right and wrong side to them. Which is totally opposite in other Karan Johar films. The most important scene in the film is the very first one, if you do not analyze that scene and watch it carefully - you pretty much miss the whole point of the movie.Dev is a successful soccer player and Maya is a confused bride. They meet at Maaya's wedding for the first time and have a minor and seemingly insignificant connection. After 5 years, fate brings them back but the difference here is that they are both unhappily married. with that realization, Dev and Maya try to help each other by saving their marriage. One circumstance leads to another and Dev and Maya fall for each other. Then starts a love that changed all relations. The film does have a few drawbacks here and there. It is a tad bit too long. The comedy is great but one or two scenes could be cut to make the film more crisp. Also, as much as I love Karan Johar films. I feel that maybe he compromised with the script. I felt it could have been handled in a way less clichéd. The whole film is unconventional so why not the climax? It isn't bad but just saying.I loved the whole art of the movie. The locales. New York City is very close to my heart and to me, it's the best city in the world. It is like life, there is happiness, sadness, joy and tears. The film depicts and the gloomy part of it with beauty. New York is a character of KANK.Shankar-Esan-Loy's music is soothing and fits in well. Unlike other Kjo films, KANK does not boast of 8 songs. It has 5 and I feel "Where's the party tonight" could have been edited. Tue music is a treat indeed. The title track, Tumhi Dekho Na, Rock N Roll are all wonderful. My favorite is Mitwa.Karan Johar and his co writer come up with a deep script and here there is an engaging screenplay and great moments. Karan Johar films have epic moments. Editing needs work though.Karan's direction is top notch. The drama unfolds so smoothly. Note the scene when SRK is walking towards Rani with flowers and sees Preity right behind her. One of the most intense scenes I've seen. Plus, I would like to give Karan credit for getting out of his comfort zone and still making a film worth applauding.Amitabh Bhachchan is a treat to watch. The man is a delight. Ditto for Kirron Kher. Preity gives a bravo performance. Rani Mukherjee suits the role and gives a great act here, as always.Abhishek Bachchan is just remarkable. He gives a mature performance. He's the guy you really feel for in the end. Just an amazing act.Nobody shines brighter than Shah Rukh Khan here. He is the energy in KANK. Note the depression, the cynicism, the hate in his eyes. SRK just rocks in a role he's not really seen in often. Superb! Overall - It's a bold film with a bolder message. If you believe in good cinema, watch it!

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was supposed to be Karan Johar's most mature work. It's not, though it does work as a film, because it's decent entertainment. I really like the combination of comedy and drama, laughs and tears in one film - that's what actually used to define Hindi films. This is the story of two couples (Shahrukh and Preity; Abhishek and Rani), in two troubled, unsuccessful relationships. Soon, Shahrukh befriends Rani and Preity befriends Abhishek. But while Abhishek and Preity's friendship is a genuine relationship of good friendship, Shahrukh and Rani's is clearly more than that, which later on grows as expected. The film has its great share of loopholes. First, it is so exhaustingly long. Almost four hours. And considering two hours were just trashy jokes and loud songs, I would've deleted at least one hour of it. I also think that while the combination of comedy and drama was handled much better in Kal Ho Naa Ho, it was overdone here: the comedy was more of a parody, the drama was more of a Greek tragedy. While the comedy is generally funny, it is at times ridiculous. Amitabh Bachchan's affairs with young prostitutes and his pathetic behaviour are not funny at all and are actually very embarrassing. The "Black Peast" sequence should have been deleted. It was funny but unnecessary. Many scenes did not contribute to the film in any way. Towards the end of the quite enjoyable first half, the comedy ends. And there starts the drama. The couples start fighting and shouting and insulting each other intensively. The dialogues get quite cheap and cliché (though at times I did enjoy them). And then begins the so-called extramarital affair. Many ask, does Karan Johar really know what marriage is all about? My answer is a definite no. They also say the film's issue is too serious to be taken so inaptly. And my reply is: KANK is NOT AT ALL an issue-based film. It's according to me just another Bollywood entertainment flick involving relationships. Trying to look at it from any other perspective would mostly result in disappointment. The characters are easily describable: Khan's Dev is a frustrated and cynical man, his failure and his wife's success make him hate his life and everything around. Rani's Maya is a boring woman who finds life unfortunate mainly because she cannot conceive. Abhishek's Rishi is a wonderful human being and husband who loves his wife to death. Preity's Rhea is an independent and ambitious career woman, who deeply loves and cares for her husband and son, but has little time to express it. None is presented as bad, but then most of them lack real depth to convince. It's easier to sympathise with Abhishek and Preity's characters for various reasons, and maybe it's the acting which determines it all.Shahrukh Khan, in one of his most unpleasant performances, is irritating for the most part. He is a great actor, but this role is not for him as he fails to register its complexity and mostly overacts. In some scenes he is witty and funny as always here too, but his character is too exaggerated and underwritten to work. Rani does not really act, she mostly cries. I mean, she is a waterfall. I think she should learn that displaying grief is not all about tears. And there are far too many tears there. I wonder how much glycerin she used in this film. She does perform naturally in several other scenes, but it's not enough as her character's inner struggle is never brought out well and it is overall a weak act. Those who really do well and steal the show are the supporting actors, particularly Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan. Zinta is excellent as Rhea. Despite a relatively small role (which Johar must be slapped for), she comes across as a strong, serious career woman and is always credible and dignified. She convincingly displays Rhea's tough outside and soft inside, and her gestures and line delivery are spot on. You just wonder where she left her bubbly and perky tomboy. Abhishek is a revelation. His romantic and loving Rishi is such a lovely character, and he just does it so well. His dramatic scenes are difficult to play and he does not disappoint. Kirron Kher is spectacular in her role. The film's biggest problem is that it's most of the time unrealistic and hard to believe. And it's a big problem in today's Hindi cinema, when so many films are naturally made and narrated. For instance, the main characters in this film always bump into each other coincidentally in the streets of New York as if New York was as small as Chandni Chowk. Johar's dialogues are often cheesy, theatrical and overly emotional. People in New York 2006 don't speak like this. Maybe that's what people like about Bollywood though, which is known for its escapist and larger-than-life melodramas. The film however has several great and funny scenes: the hilarious scene where Shahrukh and Rani try to surprise their spouses; Shahrukh and Preity's intense argument; the crosswalk Sharukh-Rani-Preity scene; the photo scene; the dinner; the scene of Rani and Amitabh in the kitchen after he finds out everything - very moving; when Preity slaps Shahrukh; the Kirron Kher-Preity Zinta scene - one of my favourite; and the Rani-Preity confrontation at the wedding ceremony - superbly acted by Preity.KANK is visually pleasing, mostly entertaining, and only occasionally convincing. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's soundtrack is fantastic and the songs are beautifully pictured. "Where's The Party Tonight?" is catchy, "Tumhi Dekho Naa" is very romantic, "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" is sad and moving. The film's ending is overlong, could have been shortened, but then it also provides a great relief. KANK is not a great film, it is poorly executed, but it surely bears the stamp of Bollywood's unique style, colour and beauty, and that's why the mixed reactions.
