Highly Overrated But Still Good

Excellent adaptation.

Best movie ever!

It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.

I remember seeing this for the first time about...13 years ago. Close to its release date anyway. I liked allot and regretted for many years for not having seen it again, on any of the local TV channels. That was until recently. And 14 years later I still love this movie. It has a simple scenario, a simple setting, but it's well played and the entire movie is just so relaxing to watch. It's not too cheesy, there aren't any exaggerated action scenes, little to no cursing, and yet it has a certain something. In conclusion, it's far, far better than many of those expensive productions that we see nowadays. And Naomi Watts is gorgeous, even dressed in that plain outfit. :)

The storyline is predictable, but what makes this movie work is the great chemistry between the two main characters, played by Naomi Watts and Tim Daly, and perfect pace of the story, great performances by supporting cast - Keith & David Carradine - and great music. After I saw the movie (watching it probably 100 times in the first few months after purchasing the DVD)I also purchased the book on which the movie was based. The book was a disappointment, the movie is much better. The plot is similar to an early John Wayne movie called "The Angel and the Badman" and also to a more recent movie with Harrison Ford titled "Witness". However, neither of those other two movies created the magical atmosphere that fans of The Outsider savor so much. If you don't love romance, you will probably not care for this movie, but for lovers of the genre, this is a feast. I did not like the ending, but can forgive it in view of how great the rest of the movie is. This movie also has great musical score,which is in no small part responsible for the movie's success.

I saw this movie by accident and could not figure out who the male lead was. Can't honestly say that I've ever been a fan of Tim Daly's but he flat out blew me away as the unrepentant gunfighter. The progression from suspicious, distrustful and hard as nails to being able to say I love you to Rebecca was impressive. Never thought he had it in him. He also looked really good in that beard and the hat , sort of had a Tim McGraw thing going. The bad guys were really bad and the Carradines as usual did their thing. The scenery and music were terrific. Overall I really liked the movie, the story and I guess I'll have to take a second look at Daly. The best way to tell a good actor is if they make you believe the character and that most definitely is what happened here.

Oh the exhaling still continues from my chest. What a breathless and deeply moving movie that not one could ever say they can't relate in some manner. Again...the forbidden LOVE. The Heart....The Soul.... The Consequences....The Tragedies and The Triumphs. To what length would one go? To what painful part of their past or their mind and memories.? What to bury,and what to dig up.? The simplicity of the film is what gives it the tenure and depth. I would strongly recommend this film to anyone. I am grateful I stumbled upon it. Just another small blessing. It will make you wonder just what it is that takes your breath away. Or what it is that keeps you held motionless, all the while knowing your heart is beating hard as the character itself does. The portrayal is authentic. The plot is obvious and the ending is not guessable. Enjoy!!Renee Marie
