To me, this movie is perfection.
Just what I expected
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Couldn't finish watching this film. It used the contrivance of men being interviewed to create an exposition on male / female relations.I found it choppy (quick cuts between scenes and interviews and even within interviews). It pontificated and had the stilted quality of a stage play. The interviews were uninteresting and stereotypical monologues and the men were mostly caricatures. While it tried to be deep, it was deep in the way an undergraduate is deep (meta criticism within the film itself) - a fist full of knowledge, poorly digested and portentously revealed. The lead actress was a passive doll throughout most of what I saw with whom I neither empathized or cared. I didn't care about any of the characters, and the construct of people talking to the camera outside the interviews was too self conscious. It was a film school, self-conscious mess with no heart and too much head, uninterestingly directed.
I could give it a much lower score had it not been for some great performances and dialogue by the African Americans in the movie: subject 42(Frankie Faison) and his father(Malcolm Goodwin) and the funny interview of subject that talks about the types of "fella". But as a whole, this movie was just all over the place...it was very much a chore to make things fit and make sense and the last monologue by John Krasinski didn't make sense, i mean, if he was the one who cheated, why would he be the one that's mad and overflowing with anger in the scene? although the story he was telling was very interesting... and the lead character lacks so much character that its very difficult to empathize with her..and the editing...oh my, it didn't help to make this story less convoluted didn't it? So, i did like the film, i thought there were very powerful scenes in it, around 5 to 6 scenes that were very redeeming..but for the most part, the film was boring or would easily get you to lose taste in it because of the editing (timeline? what timeline?--No, not Memento-jumbled-time-interesting type of interesting, just plain jumbled mess). Would i recommend it? yes, if only for the few scenes that i really liked...
I honestly can't figure out the low score on the site(as of writing this it has a 5.7). Brief Interviews with Hideous Men was one of the most powerful movies I've seen. Usually John Krasinski is a happy-go-lucky fun loving guy. But here you can really see a darker and much more serious side of him. His end monologue is one of the most intense stories I've ever heard. The story revolves around a researcher studying the different effects of feminism on men by interviewing them. She interviews many different men, and they all have problems. At first, it may trick you into thinking that this will show you a bunch of dumb stories, but it continuously gets darker and darker. You get to hear some truly powerful and gripping stories about different men's lives. They all really hit hard but never feel like they are specifically designed to shock you.The editing is probably the most potent ingredient in the mix. While it can be a bit disorienting at times, it almost always has a powerful effect on the viewer. Also, it doesn't throw everything out for you to see. You have to read between the lines for some of it before it tells you anything, really. The final few scenes pull the whole movie together so well that I really hope Krasinski writes more screenplays soon. This was an extremely intense movie to watch. It's not something you will pop in on a regular basis, or indeed watch more than once or twice, but that's not say that it was anything less than powerful and a great piece of storytelling.
You see, I would like to make it clear that I approve of this movie. A bunch. A lot, even. I was thankfully lulled into the rhythm of the film, as so rarely happens in movies these days. Light, yet full of depth, easy going down, like a fine brandy or rum. I'd say this movie is perfect to have in the background on a loop at a small party. Or watch it all the way through. Pair it with a nice wine or brandy and your favorite smoke. Good Stuff. Kudos to the director and his choice of acting moments. This movie contains a series of wonderful monologues that are obviously written with inspiration and hard-earned experience. Superbly well acted and casted. Unexpected and extraordinary.
