One of my all time favorites.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
"The New York Ripper" follows a string of savage murders being committed in New York City by a three-fingered maniac who quacks like a duck while torturing his victims with a cavalcade of sharp objects.Lauded by many of Fulci's diehard fans, "The New York Ripper" is one of his most violent and sexual, and for that reason stands in a league of its own amongst his filmography. Regular viewers of his work know he is not entirely known for cohesive narratives or dialogue, but with "New York Ripper," he does quite literally take a stab at a more straightforward giallo. This is not to say the film is entirely cohesive, because it's not, but when held against something like "The Beyond" or "The House by the Cemetery," it's fairly straightforward save a few quirks. The film has the characteristic bad dubbing that virtually all of Fulci's films have, though it's not quite as distracting here. The performances are rather solid, particularly from Andrea Occhipinti and Almanta Suska, the latter of whom has a bewitching screen presence. The real draw here, unsurprisingly, is the gore, which has Fulci in full form; it's notably violent even by his standards, and the perverse sexuality that is part and parcel of many of the murder scenes adds a disturbing layer. The conclusion has a fun switchback twist that takes the viewer by surprise, but in the end, I wouldn't rank "The New York Ripper" anywhere near my favorite of Fulci's work. Though extreme and fairly well-plotted, it does lack the ethereal, paranormal ambiance that drew me into some of his other work. That said, it's certainly far better than "Manhattan Baby." 6/10.
The New York Ripper is the hardest, roughest, bloodiest and sleaziest of Lucio Fulci's films. That's saying a lot. It has a lot to live up to, with the horrors that had come before. If you backed off of the gore and roughness of the film, you'd be left with a somewhat decent detective film. But what got made...It's like Fulci watched William Lustig's Maniac and said, "This movie is weak."Seriously, as upset as people get by some movies these days, I'd like to warn anyone easily upset to avoid this movie at all costs. Some see it as Fulci's rock bottom, reaching out to the lowest common denominator. And once his violence is removed from the fantastic, it seems much more horrifying. It's also a film where all of Fulci's tics -- especially injuries to the eye -- are not held back. In fact, nothing is held back by this film. It's brutal. This isn't a warning like at a fun house or sideshow, hyping up what is to come inside with overblown carny barker snake oil. This is legitimately a brutish, punishing film.An old man complaining about his balls hurting is walking his dog, who finds a rotting human hand that once belonged to a prostitute. Fulci predates Law and Order with this beginning, which is how every episode starts. Police detective Lieutenant Fred Williams is on the case, but he's been beaten down by New York City. This isn't the NYC of today, this is 1982 end of the world cesspool that Fulci would travel to as a tourist. This is a bleak, nihilistic world with people that are either taking advantage of one another, being taken advantage of or so cold that they have shut off all humanity. As Lt. Williams investigates, he learns that the first victim had set up a meeting with a john who used a Donald Duck voice. Yep -- this is the first hint that you are watching Fulci at his most insane. It's either going to freak you out, draw you in or shut off the movie because it's too strange. Me? I'm in.Read more at http://bit.ly/2iiI0Aq
Not really. But this movie does feature a killer who, for some reason that is never really explained, enjoys talking like Donald Duck. Such is the weirdness that comes with this Italian Galeio film. One of the weirder and less coherent of Lucio Fulci's masterpiece, this still has plenty of the expected gore, but for a Fulci film, its pretty restrained in this. Personally, this isn't one of my favorite of his movies, but it does have its moments, some of it unintentionaly hilarious, like the aforementioned killers Donald duck voice.
This is one not as great as I remembered it to be. I may have been a little intoxicated at the time, but this is definitely not worth a full 10 out of 10. Having said that, 'Lo squartatore di New York' is still an excessive, intriguing and very entertaining mix of nudity, gore and creative writing.Even if the plot does not make sense in every detail, it deals with the possible suspects in a clever way and the approach of various dark themes is open and audacious - as were many exploitation films back in the day. To add a lot of gore and (sensual, though some may find it nasty) nudity into mix, only adds to that free spirited feel of those good old days. It's a bummer that all the dialogues were dubbed, but the acting was surprisingly adequate. Not all scenes are perfect, but the camera work was very good and Fulci knew perfectly how to emulate a gritty ánd artistic (New York) atmosphere.9 out of 10 this time around. Donald Duck will never be the same again, still.
