"Scary Or Die" anthology tells five very different dark and twisted stories with L.A as a backdrop save the first. The first story happens in the borderlands outside the city close to Mexico. The film manages to quietly hint at the interwoven depth of the five tales with carefully hidden elements to the tale which require careful attention from the viewer to catch the connection. "Scary Or Die" has directors Bob Badway, Michael Emanuel, and Igor Meglic coming together to create some clever and fresh urban tales of horror which star Bill Oberst Jr., Alexandra Choi, and Corbin Bleu just to name a few playing out these ill fated lives.scary or die"Scary Or Die" is a classic horror trilogy that celebrates the classic dark, witty and twisted styles most common in 80's anthologies and television series (Tales From The Darkside is the one I kept coming back to as I watched this film). The stories are "The Crossing" - a very dark and poignant story of prejudice and karma which has a couple of 'good ole boys' seeking to deport immigrants in their own sick manner only to have fate exact a gruesome justice of it's own; "Tae Jung's Lament" - a Korean vampire tale that is both elusive and clever in it's re-imagining of a 'damsel in distress' story; "Re- Membered" – a story that brings a scene of almost demonic or devilish cat and mouse dance between a shady character with someone in the trunk; "Clowned"- is an emotional horror story that has a family torn apart over some demonic case of twisted circumstance which conjures nightmares on so many levels; and "Lover Come Back"- a sinister and justified voodoo love story that proves some emotional bonds go beyond the grave or in this case the gross dumping ground. For me this is one of the better produced anthologies that flows cleanly between tales as given through us by an unknown person via a website entitled "Scary Or Die". The person becomes known at the end, tying up the thread of continuation in this nice little flick. The stories varied from dark humor to melodramatic despair. Each of the stories held out to the very last scene before unveiling the full scope of the twisted tales which brought a freshness to each of them and made this film very entertaining. It is not a balls out scary anthology but it is clever and modern. "Scary Or Die" is a new urbanized 21st century anthology that holds it's own against the classics. I will watch this one many more times before I tire of it. Mainly because there are some deep messages in these stories that you don't see in a lot of the new anthologies and I am still trying to figure out what those messages actually represent.

Black humor, ironic twists and surprises are found in this horror. First story. A rebel couple with their friend who scare those around them and kill other peoples who are from another nation than their's, are witness of something only in zombie movies we met when they go to the desert to shoot and bury two of the victims. The second story. A widower is haunted by the ghost of his wife and one evening sitting on a bench when he sees a group of girls and one of them resembles his wife. This is kidnapped and forcibly plugged into the car and he try to help her but fails. Taejung manages to put his phone in the fuel tank and using the laptop follows the car and he is led to the place where the young woman is about to be murdered but in the last-minute he saves her managing to stop the attacker. She wants to thank him and says she'll give a little party next week and you really need to come too. He has some small doubts but finally made an appearance at her residence. Now the roles were reversed for the young who seem helpless is something else than he could have imagined and now Taejung is the one who needs help. Third story. A killer carry in the trunk his recent victim gets some bangs which normally should not hear them because the body is cut into several pieces. Lose control of the car for a few seconds and a cop stops him. He hears sound from behind and asks man to open the trunk. The killer panics and takes the gun from the glove box, but the cop comes back and says he is free to leave. It's surprised and he stops the car a few hundred meters away and finds that in the trunk the victim is no longer there and instead founds a note. Now the killer has the same fate. Fourth story. This is the longest and is about a young man who is bitten by a clown and with time changes begin to occur. His clothes remain small shoes are no longer good and slowly begins to turn into a bad clown. He leaves home for fear that his girlfriend will see him along with his mother and son. Now sleeps like a bum under a bridge and his child has a dream that becomes reality. So one night it taken somewhere for a little picnic but after the clown is unmasked gives notice that it is not his father but he appears and saves him. Fifth story. The shortest is about a man who cheated on his girlfriend, and then kill her. She returns from the dead to avenge him and his infidelity. Many would classify this film as a weak but let's give him a chance. What I liked about it is that had that dose of curiosity who makes you wonder what will happen next and makes you eager to find out and all in a very short story.

I generally love horror anthologies but this one is rarely worth your time. Only one of the five segments deserves mention, the longest one, Clowned. The other four, while not really terrible given the films very low budget, doesn't really stand out and are almost never scary or original.Usually, these types of films comes with a wrap-around sequence which makes the whole mess coherent, but this one opted not to give us that satisfaction.I'll still watch any horror anthology I can get my hands on, because if one of the segments aren't satisfying, it's pretty fast on to the next one. Same goes here, where, besides aforementioned Clowned, no segment is longer than 15 minutes. And I'm glad they weren't.

Being a big fan of horror anthology movies, I anxiously waited for Scary or Die to become available on Redbox. The film tells five stories, with what looks like a rotting hand watching each one on a computer screen. Each story, with the exception of "Clowned" (the one on the cover) is only about 15 minutes long. The first story was by far the best and most satisfying - The Crossing. It tells the story of two rednecks and a young woman (apparently one of their girlfriends) traveling by pick up truck through desert/rural Arizona. On the way, they stop at a gas/convenience stop, and while the quieter of the two rednecks goes to have roadside bathroom sex with his girlfriend (the thought of the stench alone made me gag!), the other (who also enjoys drinking some stuff - moonshine I guess - that looks like tobacco spit and urine - out of a peanut butter jar) teases the Mexican store clerk, killing him off camera, unbeknown to the female. They take off, and a little while later, arrive at their destination, a crossing along the US / Mexican border, filled with trash, and several graves marked by wooden crosses. They get out of the car, to reveal that the stench the female complained about were two Mexican immigrants, kidnapped and brought to the border for execution. Apparently, the deliverance boys did this quite a bit, as it is presumed they were responsible for the other graves on-site. The female, realizing what they are there to do complains to her boyfriend and pleads for their lives. But they murder both - one of them having revealed that he owned a landscaping company, spoke perfect English, and had kids to support. The female flips out and tries to escape, meanwhile the blood from one of the victims, plus the concoction in the rednecks peanut butter jar seeps into the ground, and up come the Mexican Zombies. While you don't get a clear look at the Zombies, they are menacing, killing and tearing both rednecks apart (man did they deserve it!)and injuring the woman - though she escapes. As she has apparently escaped, we see her shot by some border patrol snipers, mistaking her bloodied body for a zombie... Although this left me wanting more, it was satisfying and my favorite of all the stories. The second and third stories were not so good. One is about an Asian man who rescues what looks like an Asian woman from some thugs that were about to kill her, only to find out the woman was a vampire who kills everyone around her. At the end, one of the thugs hands is seen entering her building with the name "Van Helsing" on his bag. There was not enough dialog in this story, and I lost interest quickly. The third story, called "Dis-Membered" is about a hit man (possibly a dirty cop as the same actor plays a cop in the 4th story) who cuts a necromancer to pieces as part of a job, stuffs him in his trunk, and smokes a cigar in the man's house before leaving, noticing the strange medallion on a side table. Some tell-tale heart antics where he hears noises from the car trunk while driving, checks on the body parts, continues driving, is stopped by a cop that hears the noise in the trunk, has a look, then tells him to drive safely (to his surprise). A few miles after that he stops, looks in the back, and finds only the medallion only, with a message saying "You can't kill me" - then - predicable - he shows up, no longer in pieces, and kills him. The whole story is predicable and again, I lost interest. The 4th and longest segment, clowned, is a good one. Though it does drag a bit, and makes you wonder if the main character has every heard of a hospital... A young drug dealer is bitten by the weird clown with sharp teeth from his little brothers birthday party, he starts changing (the clown makeup is decent), doesn't seek medical attention, leaves home and becomes a homeless man looking for the clown who bit him. The original clown tries to take and eat his brother, but he, now the good clown fighting his instincts, saves his brother and kills the bad one. He can't get close to his family and is losing his sanity, watching children from afar, hungry... Two cops, including one from the previous story, show up and kill him. Clowned is a bittersweet story with a sad ending. The acting was very decent, and again, while it drags, remained a good story. The baby twist at the end was hilarious. The 5th and final segment is the story of the rotting hand watching these stories on a computer screen. She's seen wondering the streets, looking like someone injured walking, or like a hobo. As she walks, memories come back to her. Apparently through magic, it's known that when she loved, it would be forever. She falls in love with the wrong guy who tricks her at first, then beats her and abuses her. He kills her, but since her love was eternal, she comes back and enacts revenge on him. She then leaves the computer alone, goes outside and crawls inside a human sized chest, and locks herself inside. Weird - but good and this one too was too short, it left you wanting more. Overall, Scary or Die is a decent anthology movie with more good than bad. The acting is okay, although sometimes the budget feels apparent. Based on how much I like The Crossing alone, I gave it an 8.
