2012 Doomsday

On December 21, 2012 four strangers on a journey of faith are drawn to an ancient temple in the heart of Mexico. For the Mayans it is the last recorded day. For NASA scientists it is a cataclysmic polar shift. For the rest of us, it is Doomsday.

Good concept, poorly executed.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

This is a review without the horrid comments that I've seen in other reviews. Let's give some mixed points:+ Okay acting: Some members of the cast performed ably. These few actors deserved better written roles in better movies despite what others on here have said. Some acting, on the other hand, is just bad, bad, bad. The woman who played Sarah had her good moments and her bad moments. When she's talking about her duty from God to stay in Mexico and help... she's like a wooden plank. And so is that random Mexican guy that she's talking to.Convenience: The biggest mistake you can make in a movie or novel is by inserting convenience and convenience. When reporting the quakes to his boss at the NSA, he mentions the one random Mexican town where the archaeologists are working. That then makes the boss worried. You've mentioned well known cities... and then thrown in a completely unknown name.Little details: A storm is approaching... the trees aren't moving? A man furiously typing during a huge emergency... his computer's not even turned on. How am I supposed to take your movie seriously when some guy's typing on a laptop that's not even on?+/- Template movie: You can see that a fair amount of work has gone into writing and realising the movie. There's also a fair amount of research into the Mayan calendar but the embellishment and embarrassing elaboration just makes it silly. Successful movies indeed expand history and myth for their own benefit... but it has to be believable. You don't want a template movie. You want your own movie.+/- Use of budget: Lots of movies have budgets that don't cover what they want to do. They have grand ideas of what should happen in the movie but can't realise it because the money is not enough. You don't need fancy CGI or animatronics to make a movie. Carefully selected actors and a solid story line is all you need to win over an audience.Random information: I never even realised, for example, that "Sarah" was the daughter of the NSA boss. I didn't even know about the Earth's rotation. Either I couldn't pay enough attention or it wasn't made clear... or... it was just thrown in by the writer.I originally gave it a two. After thinking carefully, I would say it's a three. Not because I'm generous, but because I've seen a lot worse. Effort has been put into this movie and the mistakes are due to oversights in certain areas, some of which are mentioned above. This is an honest opinion and admit it, there are nastier ones on this site.

The real doomsday isn't 21 December 2012. It's sometime after five minutes of watching this movie. Sometimes you think, nah, it can't be that bad. There must be some cosmic joke behind it if I can just find the key and laugh along. Unfortunately, there is none. It's just inexorably bad. Peoples' actions seem completely unmotivated by any known psychology. This movie looks like it was directed and then edited by people who had never seen a real movie before. The effect is a bit weird, as if we're not sure we're watching a movie or something else. Possibly, some sort of preachy fundamentalist propaganda about the End of the Days by Oral Roberts University film school alumnae? Who cares. Not one redeeming feature; even good looking actors as potential eye candy are underused here. Do not watch.

I bought the DVD by mistake, wanting a different film with a deceptively similar title known for its special effects. I watched in increasing embarrassment for about ten minutes as the full awfulness of the film revealed itself and my wife wondered why I had chosen it. We got as far as the 'science', which would have had me laughing at its ignorance from the age of fourteen.Couldn't they have paid a teenager who had actually been to school to check it for them? Perhaps they could have employed a screenwriter and actors too, but then they wouldn't have had the worst film of the millennium. How did this garbage get as high as 1.9? I looked at the spread and some kind of votebot for the makers has recorded loads of tens. Couldn't you just ignore these? A few folk seem to have been more subtle and have given it five, but you wouldn't expect many associated with this film to have a full set of thinking tools, so there were not many fives. You really need to institute a zero score option to cope with excrement this deep.

Just watched the WORST Christian propaganda movie, EVER!! 2012 Doomsday (2009). A true road kill, the worst script, the worst plot, the worst acting, the worst EVERYTHING.... Could not stop watching.....LOVED IT, it was as good as going to the dentist, OK as good as LEAVING the dentist.. IMDb has a 1.9 rating, must be the lower I have ever seen...I don't even think it went to DVD ;-)Yet it was so much worst and yet so much better then watching QVC at 1AM on a Saturday..... My belly still hurts from laughing ;-)If you need a good insomnia movie to help you fall asleep while feeling extra good about yourself because you were not of any part of this trash, Enjoy
