The Unsinkable Molly Brown

The buoyant Molly Brown has survived the first crisis of her life—a flood. Sixteen years later she sets out to make her way in the world. She assures the Leadville saloon keeper that she can sing and play the piano, and learns quickly. Soon she marries Johnny Brown, who in a few years will be able to replace the original cigar wrapper wedding ring with a replica in gold and gemstones. The Browns head for Europe and bring a few crowned heads back to Denver for a party that turns into a ballroom brawl. Molly goes to Europe alone, returning on the Titanic. She didn't survive a flood as a baby for the story to end here.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

Fantastic!Debbie Reynolds stars as a tomboy turned saloon girl searching for a man who will show her the world and more. Harve Presnell stars as the bachelor who attempts to sweep her off her feet. The movie musical is a rollicking good time filled with song and dance numbers to keep you entertained. One of Debbie Reynolds signature roles.

As a musical-comedy, The Unsinkable Molly Brown is easy on the eyes thanks to location filming and Daniel Flapp's Oscar nominated cinematography, but it's hard on the ears; not because of the score, but rather Reynolds' non-stop bellowing. The scene of Reynolds barking out orders at the other women on the Titanic lifeboat feels like an SNL skit. The film is a corny piece of Americana that's more busy than entertaining. Harve Persnell has a powerful voice, but is largely wooden and adrift, and he and Reynolds are not well-matched. The scenes depicting the sinking of the Titanic and its aftermath are rushed, and the ending is anti-climatic. Like many movie musicals, it has a few decent musical numbers, I particularly liked He's My Friend, but little else is memorable. Molly Brown's story is so much more interesting than what is presented here.

Debbie Reynolds in her book "Debbie My Story" tells that Director Chuck Walters drove to Reynolds Beverly Hills home in a monsoon rain storm to beg Debbie Reynolds to not do this film. It seems Shirley MacLaine had been under the assumption that She would be the star and Walters also wanted Shirley MacLaine. Ms.Reynolds writes that Shirley MacLaine herself called Debbie Reynolds to read her the riot act, that the role was MacLaine's and Debbie Reynolds somehow stole it. As we all know Ms. Reynolds went on to do the movie and gave an Academy Award Nominating Performance in this smash hit MGM film that co starred Harve Presnell. Ms.Reynolds writes in her book some of the great extravagant dance sequences were budgeted for one take only putting added stress on Reynolds and the cast. The film is rip roaring success and very enjoyable. Debbie Reynolds in her book tells Shirley MacLaine during their argument that "this is my last chance at a big role, you will have many more". Debbie Reynolds was right. (Shirley MacLaine years later would play "Debbie" in Postcards From The Edge, perhaps a bit of payback?) I recommend this colorful and great musical from the greatest studio of its time MGM.

"The Unsinkable Molly Brown" made its debut on Broadway in 1960. Tammy Grimes, as the Molly Brown of the title, received, perhaps, the best reviews of her acting career. When it was made into an MGM musical, Miss Grimes, lost her creation to Debbie Reynolds, who had a bigger name and was a favorite of the movie going public.Meredith Wilson, the man behind another hit, "The Music Man", created a musical comedy that showcased a fictionalized account of the larger than life character of Molly, a woman who went from humble beginnings to bigger, and better things. As a matter of fact, she was truly "unsinkable" as proved by having survived the Titanic disaster. Not having seen this film for quite some time, didn't quite make it for this viewer, on a second viewing, in spite of glowing comments from other IMDb contributors. However, it must be noted, our memory of having seen it before was more positive than the impression we got in watching it again. Part of the problem is the plot, which is silly, in the way the material is presented. Then again, this film has a dated feeling.Debbie Reynolds threw herself into the role of Molly with gusto. It's one of her best achievements in the movies, and it should be recognized. Herve Presnell, who played Johnny Brown on Broadway, seemed destined for bigger and better things, as he shows here with his handsome looks and powerful singing voice. The cast includes several character actors that enhance the movie, notably, Ed Begley, Hermione Baddeley, Jack Krushen and Martita Hunt, among others. The film could be seen as a curiosity, although it shows its age. The songs, with only a few exceptions don't have the quality of other Meredith Wilson's work. Only a couple of songs stay with the viewer after all is said and done. Charles Walters' direction was not too inspired and perhaps that seems to be the basic flaw with this "Molly".
