The Red Baron
Richthofen goes off to war like thousands of other men. As fighter pilots, they become cult heroes for the soldiers on the battlefields. Marked by sportsmanlike conduct, technical exactitude and knightly propriety, they have their own code of honour. Before long he begins to understand that his hero status is deceptive. His love for Kate, a nurse, opens his eyes to the brutality of war.

Wonderful character development!
Nice effects though.
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.
I gave this film nine out of ten stars for two reasons.,,The first was that when Verner Voss dies there was no mention at all of the tremendous odds he faced the day he died. Anyone interested should google "The Death of Verner Voss Video" and see the recreation of it.The second was it's very liberal creativity with historical events. There is, for example, no evidence that Richtofen had any contact with Roy Brown, the man who eventually shot down Richtofen, prior to their meeting the day Richtofen died. That said, this film is extraordinary in several ways which make the two items above forgivable. The depiction of those flying men as gentlemen trying to be honourable in a time of war, their happy-go-lucky attitude regarding their deadly profession and the relationships they had make for an enjoyable ride. The areal combat sequences are, simply put, the best I have ever seen in a film depicting World War 1 and certainly rank in the top five of those I all I have seen.Cudos to the actors who brought their characters to life for us. They could not have done better.I am only sorry I did not see it on the big screen...
The most powerful part of this movie is the very effective way in which it depicts the chaos and insanity of the First World War. You could, I suppose, say that any war fits that description of chaotic and insane - but the First World War is the classic example. It had no real purpose; it was in many ways a war that started by accident as a chain of events got set in motion that no one had the courage to stop. And the end result was 4 years of slaughter. And, of course, the First World War introduced a new element to warfare - aerial warfare, and the emergence of the "aces" - pilots who shout down large numbers of enemy planes. The movie's absolute strongest point is almost certainly the recreated aerial battles. And at the top of the list of flying aces was Manfred von Richtofen - the Red Baron. As a biography of Richtofen, this movie falls far short. It doesn't really portray much of his life, aside from his war experiences, and much of what is portrayed in heavily romanticized. His romance with the French nurse is unlikely, and the friendship with Canadian pilot Roy Brown (who in real life was incorrectly identified as the pilot who shot Richtofen down and killed him) in which the two shared chats in No Man's Land never happened. The movie was, however, correct in pointing out the respect in which pilots from the opposing sides held each other. The movie progresses along a path which is increasingly sombre, starting with an almost joyous feel as pilots took to the skies, and gradually descending into a depiction of the horrors of war, graphically displayed in a scene shot inside a military field hospital, and in some depictions of ground combat.Unfortunately, while this does have strong points, it ultimately comes across as largely flat and often passionless. It's the sort of movie that you really don't feel you need to pay close attention to - and sometimes you're quite compelled not to pay close attention, because large stretches of it are rather dull. But it does do a decent job of depicting the insanity of World War I. (6/10)
This movie couldn't be more inaccurate if it tried. An unrealistic, badly written waste if time. The facts of this mans life are easy to find out and are more interesting than the fantasy plot of this movie. If film makers are going to make a fictional film like this then why use a real man as a basis for it?If a film is to be based on a real person then please use facts. Se5a aircraft in 1916? A love interest when there is no documented evidence? Actors clearly in their 40's playing those in their 20's and Richtoffen shooting down Roy brown?Just a few of the long list of fail for this movie.
Perhaps it's unfair to write this brief critique because it is one of just three movies I have failed to watch the whole way through. I simply couldn't stomach any more of it. The overall impression was of a bunch of amateurs at work, and that includes both cast and crew. Tacky, unconvincing, shallow, etc., etc. The screenplay was written by someone who doesn't understand dialogue. The editing (the shot sequences) was poor and seemed to have been done by someone who lacked a basic understanding of the rules. The music was all wrong... it simple didn't work, it didn't belong. The acting was poor and unconvincing. The story-line (what story-line?) was disjointed and all over the place. The aerial dog fights were a waste of time - again, totally unconvincing. Who directed this mess? I really should check that out, I'll make a point of avoiding anything else he/she might have been involved in. If you have something else that needs doing, such as counting flies or chasing sardines, do it! Do not waste a second of your life with this utter rubbish.
