It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.

Very few names in the Indian film industry command a stature where the name says it all, and Vishal Bhardwaj tops the list! 7 Khoon Maaf is another trademark VB movie which comes with solidly written characters, brilliant performances and a well executed no nonsense direction. If there is one thing you can expect from a VB movie then it would be a STORY and a story told well. While VB draws upon already existing, and sometimes famous written works (If you haven't, then stop reading this and watch Omkara), he has the ability to make it original with his definition of the characters and ability to draw breathtaking performances from his actors. Sussana is another elevation for Priyanka Chopra post Fashion and Kaminey but if you pay attention to easily negotiable characters, the performances of Goonga and Ghalib will leave you speechless and speak volumes about the commitment of VB. Of all the cameos, Neil Nitin Mukesh steals the show and Annu Kapoor probably gave his best performance post Guldasta in Tezaab. Needless to mention the guy (VB) writes, produces, directs and does music for the film yet again which gives him the control and room for creating an impact. If you are a VB fan then you suffer from the same expectation trigger that sets in even before watching the movie. And for this reason the story doesn't keep you on the edge all the time and there are stretched moments, including the song in the end. All said and done 7 is the most appropriate rating for a movie worth a watch.

Frankly speaking before watching 7 KHOON MAAF, a viewer already knows that in this film a woman is shown killing her seven husbands in different ways for some diverse reasons in her whole life span. And after watching it you still know the same and nothing new. The film starts off as a true artistic kind of project but just keeps on showing Priyanka murdering her 7 husbands one by one and nothing else. Moreover while watching her murdering them all, one neither feels the pain of loneliness felt by the lady deep inside nor one feels sorry for any of the husbands being killed by their respective turns. So if you are expecting to see an exciting thriller, a tense murder mystery, an investigative crime drama or a painful saga of a lonely lady, then I would clearly like to state that it is not even close to any of these. In specific words, after viewing it, I neither had any feeling of hatred towards the killer lady nor any kind of sympathetic emotion felt towards her lonely character in search of True Love. The director just keeps on showing the lady killing all her husbands with the help of her three domestic helps as if there is no LAW anywhere and its very easy to kill anyone just like that. There are no serious investigations undertaken anywhere in the film about all these murders and the Police is also shown in a very hilarious manner investigating the murder of even a distinguished Foreign National in a very disgraceful manner. After a long time I found Vishal Bhardwaj coming up with a very questionable and weak kind of script, having so many loose ends right from its start. Post intermission it raises even more unanswered question till its climax and the ending leaves you with a strange kind of feeling of reaching no- where.Taking the additional responsibility of MUSIC, Vishal also doesn't deliver a Winner soundtrack this time. It has only few good tracks including the now famous Indianised version of the Russian song "Kalinka" called "Darling" sung skillfully by the great Usha Uthap, who also features in the movie in a short role. Out of the rest I liked "Bekaraan" sung soulfully by Vishal Bhardwaj himself. And as usual the director uses his two mediums of Cinematography and Background Music in the film as a master film-maker.The biggest disappointment in the film with the title 7 KHOON MAAF is that out of its 7 featured husbands only 2 are able to generate a feeble kind of impact and that too doesn't stay with you for long with the continuous introduction of the new ones down the storyline. From the entire bunch of husbands the best one remains Anu Kapoor, one of the most under-rated actors of our Hindi Film Industry, followed by the internationally famous Irrfan Khan in his own unique style. From the rest Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham are good but the remaining fail to make any kind of impact on the viewer including Naseeruddin Shah. Vivaan Shah (Naseer's real life son), who plays the narrator of the story is very promising and Konkana Sen Sharma in a short role is sweet. But I really loved watching Usha Uthap in a smart cameo of Priyanka's house help who goes on to sacrifices her life for her lady master. Being the leading lady of the project, Priyanka Chopra gives another shining performance of her career portraying the life of a lonely lady from her twenties to the late sixties. However I seriously feel that she surely could have won more hearts all over, if only the movie was made more entertaining and engrossing for the common man. Still, taking things with a positive attitude, a film from Vishal Bhardwaj can never be a complete washout since the director does give you few worth watching moments in his film at regular intervals. So, even if I didn't like the movie which was way below my expectations from the director and his team, I would surely like to mention here some great cinematic factors, not to be missed while watching it.1. Just watch out the way Vishal, tells you the time and year of each story, with the help of some T.V. shots, news clipping and people reading news papers with some clearly readable headlines.2. The director is a real pro when it comes to shooting some bold bed room scenes with his leading actors. From this particular point of view the film is at par with any International reputed project of a renowned festival director from any part of the world.3. Though I personally didn't enjoy it, but I sincerely appreciate Vishal Bhardwaj's continuous and intentional effort of making movies inspired from the rich literature waiting to be explored by anyone. This is his second film based on a Ruskin Bond story (first was "The Blue Umbrella) with the title 'Susanna's Seven Husbands'. And as an honorary gesture, Vishal also has given a brief role to the writer in the film itself. So just see if you can recognize him when he comes on the screen.Summing up, I would only like to say that for few great art movie lovers or festival movies hunters, 7 KHOON MAAF may be an outstanding venture in some cinematic sense of their own. But from a common man or a normal movie-buff's point of view the film can also be called as boring, uninteresting and unentertaining all together. So I would not be able to rate it high due to the above factors.

starting Priyanka Chopra as Susana in 7 khoon maaf its is based on Ruskin Bonds novel susanas 7 husbands. .i saw a user posted here in Disscussion boards that some novels should never be adapted to movie & its true.this film is not that confusing but it lacks something in between.the director did his best but fails to create magic . . the actors & the whole team put hard work it this for me its not satisfying. scenes like a rockstar husband & a Muslim husband who rapes forces his own wife for sex,i mean dudes are you joking here..& what was the genere of this movie hmm comedy/thriller or horrible . tries to show too much art & detail to the viewer but its long & very slow.make yo go crazy & feel sorry for the actors. the music is average.only watch it for priyanka, john abraham, irrfan khan .my rating is 3/10

The negative reviews this movie was given upon release did not discourage me from watching it, and I'm very happy for that, because I really enjoyed it. Okay, 7 Khoon Maaf is not the best movie of the year, nor is it Vishal Bhardwaj's best, but it is just good enough to make for an interesting watch. I was fascinated by the concept of a black widow who kills all the many of her husbands. The fact that it was directed by Bhardwaj, one of the finest directors in the Indian film industry made it more promising for me. This is the story of Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes and her constant search for happiness. She is beautiful, attractive, and she badly wants to be a wife to the ideal husband, but alas, in each of her husbands she finds major flaws which make them quite impossible to live with. The first is possessive, crippled, insecure and jealous; the second is a singer whose growing fame makes him start cheating on her and using drugs; the third is a sadomasochist; the fourth is a Russian spy who turns out to be leading a double life, having another family abroad; the fourth is a police inspector who Susanna reluctantly marries because he knows her secrets; and the sixth is a doctor who saves her life at first, but later tries to kill her in order to inherit her property. Well, six husbands there are and one may wonder who the seventh husband is... well, this is a secret that will be uncovered when you see the film. With every husband, Susanna tried hard to handle the situation and believed she could change something, but when she realised she could not, she chose the easiest option of killing them. Each time, she was assisted by her faithful servants who loved her unconditionally. 7 Khoon Maaf is one very ironic and entertaining story which is very well executed. Bhardwaj's direction is excellent, and the film is dark and humorous. The cinematography is fantastic and the music also fits the film's mood to the max. I did not find the pace problematic at all, and according to me the movie flowed well. Of course, everything in the film depends on the character of Susanna, and it is a great, nuanced role which is written and presented very well. I badly tried not to sympathise with Susanna's character, but I failed. It's simply because despite everything, she is not presented as a villain but more as a victim. Of course nothing can justify what she did, but the thing is that she herself is actually portrayed as a caring, dedicated person who is just not ready to live in pain and wants to be happy. Additionally, each one of her husbands is a negative character and a semi-monster of sorts, more or less, so it was easy to dislike them. Not even once did I feel for any of them. More than anything, however, it is the film's darkly comic tone which makes the audience take everything easily and never worry too much.Priyanka Chopra plays the film's main protagonist, and this modern femme-fatale is probably the best role of her career. Chopra really tries her best, but while she does well enough within the parameters of the film and is quite effective throughout, one thing is sure: she is not the best choice for the part and one can easily imagine this role played with much more conviction by a more competent actress. In all fairness to her, at times she is so good that she manages to outdo herself, but in most parts you just want more, or actually less. Chopra is a very sexy young lady, but something is missing there, and maybe it's just because she is not a mature enough actress and does not know when she has to push the right button. She does not really register the complexity of Susanna and her mysterious nature. It's a role that requires an actress who has the correct mix of beauty, sensuality and talent. Someone like Rekha in her younger days would have been a perfect choice for this part, because she had the ability to create a deeply troubled and at the same time cryptic and enigmatic persona. Having said that, it is Chopra's film and the guys are there only to support her. All of them do very well, but those who impressed me the most are Annu Kapoor as her fifth husband, and Vivaan Shah, who is the film's narrator. I recommend you to watch 7 Khoon Maaf, it's an impressive picture and an altogether worthy effort.
