Very well executed
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
After spiriting a Swiss scientist Dr Franz Tobel to Britain under the noses of the Gestapo it looks as if the RAF are going to get his revolutionary new bomb sight. Of course nothing is that simple; Tobel insists in being in charge of its manufacture and divides the sight into four parts each to be made by separate scientists whose identity only he knows. Just in case anything happens to him he gives a coded note to his fiancée which is to be given to Sherlock Holmes if anything happens to him. Not long afterwards Tobel disappears and so does the note luckily Holmes can read the message from the imprint of the code so the race is on to decode it. Who will solve it first Holmes or his arch-nemesis Moriarty? This Sherlock Holmes adventure, made during the War, unsurprisingly has the Nazis as the bad guys even if the dastardly Moriarty is the main villain Holmes must face. The central mystery is intriguing; most notably the code that must be cracked. There are some impressive false starts as it keeps looking as though things will go wrong for Tobel before he is actually kidnapped and when he is the tension rises nicely until Holmes and Moriarty are face to face and it looks as though Holmes is doomed at least to anybody who hadn't seen a single Sherlock Holmes story! Basil Rathbone does an impressive job as Holmes and Lionel Atwill is suitably menacing as Moriarty, there is also solid enough support from Nigel Bruce and William Post Jr as Watson and Tobel. Overall I rather enjoyed this and certainly recommend it to fans of Sherlock Holmes or anyone looking for an inoffensive mystery.
This portrayal of Holmes and Watson by Rathbone and Bruce is one shot by Universal Studios, what some fans consider to be a period of decline for Sherlock Holmes films. This film is the first time that Roy Williams Neill takes the helm as director, he would later direct all the other Universal/Sherlock projects. Based loosely on Conan Doyle's "Dancing Men" Sherlock has to uncover the truth about the 'secret weapon' and make sure England and it's populous are safe. Naughty Holmes nemesis, Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill), is working with the Nazi's, by devious means they are about to build a machine which would control the seas of the world. Will they build their machine and take a step towards global domination, can Holmes stop them? This isn't the best Sherlock film I've seen with Rathbone/Bruce/Atwill but it's still entertaining and harmless. Another decent watch for a lazy Sunday afternoon, just don't watch it with a critical mind because there are holes to poke at. You'll still get witty dialogue from the stars with strong individual performances, silly disguises from Holmes, a little tension and some mystery. There is no way I can rate this as high as "Hound of the Baskerville" but still it's not offensive to the senses.
This is the Second and Best of the Three Basil Rathbone Movies with Holmes set During WWII. Although the Conceit of Modernizing Sherlock has Purist Pontificating Endlessly about the Blasphemy, Truth is that the Rathbone-Bruce Series Probably did more to Reinstate Arthur Conan Doyle's Consulting Detective to the Public's Consciousness than Anything Else. The Updated Movies were All Fun and with Rathbone's Energetic Performances and a Striking and Sometimes Dark Style were just Dandy. Here He dons Three Rather Impressive Disguises (a Holmes trademark), is Near Horrific Death on Two Occasions, and must in the End Battle Wits with His Arch Nemesis Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill). Some of the Military Stuff is Clunky and the there is a Weak Female Participant, but it is the First in the Series to Include Holmes Link to Scotland Yard, Inspector Lestrade (Dennis Hoey), "Always glad to have you hanging around Mr. Holmes". Listen Up for the Throwaway Lines, one about that Well Known German Author William Shakespeare and the other about the Needle. Yes, Fun Stuff.
Tonight I am watching ( for genre ) Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon. 1943 colorized version. It stars "Razzle Backbone" as Sherlock Holmes and he rescues a supposed bomb sight expert professor from Austria and during the British test flight and use of his bomb sight in the bomber... They have him cranking a Bessler photo enlarger up and down with cuts to a view screen of the cross hairs of the sight on the bombing test target below....Guess that they was hard up for a bomb sight prop so someone ran down to the Universal studios photo lab and uh, borrowed an enlarger. This ranks right up there with plumes of smoke floating upwards from Buck Rogers loudly buzzing rocket ship... fun...
