Load of rubbish!!
Excellent but underrated film
A Masterpiece!
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
This is the small, independent-film love story that the big studios are afraid to make. Luckily, it succeeds as only a small-budget, small-town affair can.A very well-acted foursome explores trans romance in an small Kentucky town, and the whole thing looks to have been filmed in someone's back yard, with four or five sets, total, but with the acting ability and excellent story line of a poignant and beautiful story. We meet Michelle as a 21-year-old aspiring designer, and only gradually learn of her past as a boy and her transgender journey as a teenager. Jimmy is seemingly her best, straight friend, her buddy and bro, until he realizes he's jealous of Michelle's affection for Francesca. Francesca herself is the daughter of a politician, fiancée of a soldier in Afghanistan, and one-time lover, almost in spite of herself, of Michelle. The soldier, in one surprise, returns from the middle east to marry Francesca, but, in a second surprise, turns out already to have his own secretive past with Michelle. All of this unfolds with bravery and beauty, without a false note and with an affecting ending that never preaches, as it teaches, southern, small-town tolerance. It even has one brief scene of pro-operative, transgender nudity, answering some viewers' questions about the actress, as it lovingly respects the trans* folks among us. It's ultimately too bad more people won't see this amazing little film--it's the kind of picture the big-budget studios _should_ be doing more of.
I have given my support for many LGBT themed movies, primarily those that are transgender based. Although I do admit, a lot of them are poorly written or are far from the truth. Boy Meets Girl is different. It is a beautiful depiction of what could truly happen in the life of a transgender girl. How do I know? Because I am a transgender girl myself. As a transgender girl myself, I will admit that I have had far more struggles than Ricky does on Boy Meets Girl, but that is primarily due to being a part of a large town. Ricky lives in a small town and people tend to be forced to get to know you. I have also come out to friends and family in my late 20's while Ricky came out early as a child. I found myself wishing I was more her, and less me. Then I watched her video she made when she was young, and believe it or not, I did something similar and I felt like I was Ricky. Why am I telling everyone this stuff? It's because the way this movie is written, allows you to better understand the complexity of the characters and yet feel for their struggles. It allows you to get drawn into their passion and cry through their pain. The characters are amazing and appear so natural. This movie is one of the most realistic, and beautifully written, transgender themed movies I have seen as of yet. Please like this review, then like this movie. Give "Boy Meets Girl" the exposure that it deserves!
As a parent of a young trans man, I had hoped that this movie would treat the issues of a young trans woman with insight and nuance and it does. What I didn't expect was how well it works as a truly romantic movie, funny, difficult, sweet. I have watched it alone, first, then with my husband and son. And snuck another watching in...it's really a great movie. It avoids some of the stereotypes -- and makes it easier to understand that one's gender is different from one's sexual attraction (one is who you go to bed AS -- the other is who you go to bed WITH). It also deftly avoids stereotypes of the South, although I wish all people were as accepting as people in Ricky's hometown. The three leads are so winning -- hard to believe that lead Michelle Hendley had not acted before. I hope she gets wonderful work that will help her continue to thrive as an actor. There's a tiny production flaw that involved a license plate -- hope that knowing that will keep you watching!
This was the most beautiful movie I have seen in years. Wonderful message of acceptance for the young (teenagers) and old. I think that the US desperately needed this movie right now and the world can really benefit from it too. Also, what a fantastic and fearless lead actress! I can't wait to see more work of her and other transgender actors.Overall, a bittersweet story of the struggles of life as a transgender person who is trying to fit into our society. It leaves you wrapped around a fuzzy feel-good feeling.Go watch it, you will not regret it.
