You won't be disappointed!
So much average
I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Sherlock Holmes is not a good movie by a long shot, but in comparison to some of the other movies Asylum has churned out it is not that bad either.I do agree it does have its problems. The film is low budget, and some of it does show, as some of the production values while not terrible are not great. Some of the editing could have been better, while the film is dully lit and some of the sets, locations and costumes are just okay if somewhat uninteresting. The dinosaur and dragon are quite good though. The film is too short, and I think too rushed as well, and while it was nice to listen to the soundtrack was forgettable soon after. Ben Syder does do what he can with the iconic detective known as Sherlock Holmes but I couldn't help thinking in terms of mannerisms and appearance he was miscast. However, the direction was decent, as was the script which had some nice touches without being entirely exceptional. While it does have its holes and quite strange in its feel, the story is an interesting one and entertaining enough if you don't think about it too much, the villain is enjoyable and there are some good performances from Gareth David as a more quiet and composed Watson and Dominic Keating. Elizabeth Arends is lovely, and the climax was diverting and much better than I expected.Overall, there is nothing outstanding on display, and those who are looking for a faithful adaptation will be disappointed. But it is mildly entertaining with some good things if you don't take it too seriously. 5/10 Bethany Cox
You know when you're bored and it's time to watch a movie, yet there's nothing on the box and you're fed up watching Scarface for the 67th time, what do you do? Pop over to your neighbours and ask him if he's anything to watch. I did just that, and guess what he gave me? Yes, you guessed correctly: Sherlock Holmes. "But that's not Jude Law and RDJ" I said, to which my neighbour replied, "no, it's not" OK, let's give it a try. I popped the kettle on, made a brew, sat back and pressed play on my remote control... to quote Jack Lemmon: "It's magic time" Sadly, it quickly became 'Tragic time' I got past the opening scene, and then onto the scene where Holmes enters the room where Watson is about to cut into the corpse, Holmes mentions that it is ten o clock, you can actually see Holmes eyes looking up and to his right at the clock and you'll notice that the hands on the clock suggest that it's actually 25mins to 2. I got no further than that. Enough said. I thank you.P S - My neighbour told me to throw it in the bin after I'd watched it.
Sherlock Holmes (2010) ** (out of 4) When the Robert Downey, Jr. version of SHERLOCK HOLMES was released you just knew it wouldn't take long for The Asylum to show up with their version. While I wouldn't say this film was better we at least get the benefit of a shorter running time. This time out, just as WWII is breaking out, Watson tells a woman another story of when he saw London on fire. We flash back to 1870 as Holmes (Ben Syder) and Watson (Gareth David-Lloyd) investigate a ship sinking where the only survivor says it was a sea monster that brought it down. Soon after wards a dinosaur-creature shows up so it's up to Holmes to try and figure where these monsters are coming from. Those expecting a Basil Rathbone type of Holmes are going to be solely disappointed but I think as long as you come into this thing understand that it is from The Asylum then you might not be all that bored. I think there are many, many problems with the film but I was surprised to see how much of it I was actually enjoying and I think had the left the monsters on screen for more of the running time then it could have been even better. Syder isn't too bad as Holmes, although I think the one thing he's missing is being able to convince us that he's this intelligent mastermind. David-Lloyd is actually a very good Watson and I thought he and Syder made for a pretty good team, although no one will be forgetting the Bathbone/Bruce films. The monster creations were also a lot better than I expected with the dinosaur looking extremely good. We're not talking JURASSIC PARK territory but it still looked fairly well for such a low-budget film. The one negative thing is that the story itself just has way too many holes and there are way too many dry moments that really make the 90-minute running time feel even longer than it actually is. I thought director Goldenberg actually did a good job with the style and visual look of the film. So, this SHERLOCK HOLMES is fairly well made and has some good things going for it but it's doubtful people will be watching this fifty-years from now.
Everything about this film stinks but what is most irritating is the way that the USA production team has created a mock London, with paperboys throwing rolled up newspapers onto door steps (doesn't happen in England), Buck House guards with medals on their chests and the wrong rifles, monsters that are poorly made and some accents from the Dick Van Dyke school of acting. It gets off to a bad start with Holmes interrupting Watson doing a PM saying it is 10 o'clock when the clock behind Watson has a completely different time. THe story then just descends into a muddle with no form or purpose.I bought it on DVD for £3 but still feel ripped off.
