Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

I'm not going to lie , I guess you can say I'm a somewhat fan of Tyler Perry's work. With that being said, i also don't expect his films to be at all exceptional. It's just a great laugh when hes playing Madea as she serves as a comic relief from the bad storyline, almost making you forget about it Therefore, i try to avoid his films without the latter character. This film however totally changed my perception of Non madea related films. to summarize the plot, The four couples, who are also best friends, converge on a house in the mountains for a week-long retreat that has become their ritual of sorts to help work out their marital problems and ask the question "Why did I get married?". Though the couples have committed to being physically present for the week, some of them have not been emotionally present in their respective marriages for quite some time. The week is not planned out in a well-programmed sequence, so the events unfold somewhat spontaneously, beginning with their "adventures" in getting up to the mountain retreat. The film is bound to make you go through a wave of emotions & the drama filled climax scenes are seat edgers and doesn't tend to the cliché story lines Tyler Perry is so used to using. Each couple displays a different problem going on in the relationship , therefore making it a relatable experience. The cast is great and aside from a few corny comic relief moments, you will also get a good laugh here and there.Enjoyable Film that i recommend watching!

Four married couples attempt to get their marriages back on the right track during a weekend of vacation. It's a yearly routine that has them ask the question "Why Did I Get Married?" Diane (Sharon Leal) & Terry (Tyler Perry) are having issues with one another, because Terry believes Diane is not paying enough attention to him, or spending quality time with each other. Marcus (Michael Jai White) & Tasha Smith (Angela) quarrel constantly about everything, especially over Marcus's ex wife, and Angela's heavy drinking. Gavin (Malik Yoba) & Patricia (Janet Jackson) haven't been the same since a tragic incident. Mike (Richard T. Jones) & Sheila (Jill Scott) are on the brink of splitting up, with Sheila trying to save their marriage. Mike belittles her about her weight, and sleeps around on her. This is considered to be one of Perry's best movies, and for good reason. It's a great mix of melodrama & humor. Tyler really has things clicking on all cylinders with this one. Despite all of the selfish motives from the characters in this movie, I was able to relate to almost everyone, except for Mike's character. Tyler's heavy heart is at it again, and he takes a realistic look at the problems of marriages. The melodramatics are here as usual, but they are believable. Perry provides us with colorful characters, and issues we can all sympathize with. I personally am very reluctant about marriage, for the same reasons depicted in this movie. Couples forget why they fell in love in the first place, and become very subdued and even estranged from one another. Perry looks at that issue long and hard in this film. I was really impressed with the dialog in this movie. Whether it was the fellows chatting away about their problems, or the females, Perry makes sure to keep things lively and witty at all times. The dinner scene is absolutely wild. I won't spoil it, but it's great. Tyler Perry is quite decent. I understood his frustrations with Diane. He's a great comedian, but it's always nice to see Perry take on meatier roles. Sharon Leal is rather cold as Perry's wife, but that's the way she is written. She did her job very well. Tasha Smith is alternately hilarious and infuriating. Her cantankerous character will have people divided, I'm sure. She was always lively, I'll say that. Michael Jai White does well as the incumbent husband of her's. Marcus & Angela are probably the most interesting couple. There is a reason their characters got a T.V show. Janet Jackson & Malik Yoba are good as the emotionally distraught couple. Richard T. Jones plays a loathsome, sexist son of a bitch. I hated his guts, and because of that, he did his job extremely well. Jill Scott has a couple off moments, but she's easily sympathetic as Sheila. Her character goes through a winning transformation in the second half. Lamman Rucker is quite bland as the sheriff. He doesn't have the range to pull of what is needed, and I felt he was miscast. My only real carp about this movie is that a sequel commenced. All the characters had a fitting ending in this movie, and I was really content with how everybody was heading. Money talks I guess…Final Thoughts: It's chaotic, wild, brazen, and very entertaining. This is Tyler Perry at his best. If you're a fan of Perry's work, you really have no excuse not to see this8/10

"Why Did I Get Married" film addresses the issue of maintaining a solid relationship. In the film, four married couples who are also best friends go to Colorado for their annual week long vacation. The film stars with Dr. Terry Brock (Tyler Perry) is married to Dianne (Sharon Leal), Garvin Agnew (Malik Yoba) is married to Patricia (Janet Jackson), Mike (Richard T. Jones) is married to Sheila (Jill Scott), and Marcus Williams (Michael Jai White) is married to Angela (Tasha Smith). Over the course of the week, none of the couples probably anticipates just how eventful the vacation is about to unfold. One couple's infidelity comes out of the closet. As a result, each couple begins to question their own marriage after secrets have been revealed about each couple. Throughout, the couples battle with issues of commitment, betrayal and forgiveness while examining their lives as individuals as well as committed couples. The film explores many themes including infidelity, women's friendship and deception within a marriage. Moreover, the film shows the resultant emotional impact that infidelity plays upon marriage. Overall, in this film each couple's relationship is a mess. However, the film unfolds many unsurprising life lessons. Sheila has discovered that Mike has been cheating on her with the girl who came along with Mike at the reunion. Sheila surprising betrayal made her feels unconfident about herself. Dianne on the other hand, feels so beaten down when she finds out that Terry has done a DNA test on their daughter because he was questioning Diane's infidelity. Patricia breaks down and cries after she finds out that her husband has been blaming her over the accidental death of their toddler child. Angela and Mike have been dealing with their differences. Basically, the character Angela is so pathetic trying to find herself. "The Family That Preys" is another Tyler's film that has some similarities with "Why Did I Get Married" themes. The family that Preys is another film about women's friendship and infidelity. The character Andrea (Sanaa Lathan) is married to a trusting husband Chris (Rockmond Dunbar). However, Andrea has been having an affair with her boss William (Cole Hauser). Infidelity has a huge impact on both films because it has destroyed the relationships between couples. In the film "Why Did I Get Married" there are many techniques use to show emotional and psychological level. There is a use of a high angle shot when Sheila is driving alone in the mountains making her helpless and insignificant. Different lighting have been used to suit the mood and atmosphere of each scene in a film. The couples in the film have many similarities when it comes to their relationships. They are all willing to work on their marriage even though each couple has their own issues.

As I said before, "Daddy's Little Girls" was good, but not great or excellent like Tyler Perry's first two films. Would this one be able to give the writer/producer/director/actor another great hit? The answer is yes! This movie is even better than the other films Tyler Perry released! I even requested this film to friends after I saw it in theaters; some of us talked about it and were really impressed by what we saw! This is a great updated version from the stage play. Rather than it focusing on two couples, we see four couples here who go to a Colorado town for their annual marriage retreat. One couple, Terry & Dianne, are struggling with Dianne's stubbornness to do what's best for the two of them instead of just herself. Angela & Marcus are fighting with the ever popular "baby mama drama," as well as Marcus' gaining respect as a man. Another couple, Sheila & Mike, have trouble as Mike finds he's not in love with Sheila anymore; Sheila is depressed and will do anything to save her marriage. The final couple, Patricia & Gavin, seem to be the perfect couple; they support each other, and they love each other deeply. The other great characters we meet are Trina, Sheila's "best friend" and Troy, the sheriff of the town the couples go to for their retreat. The couples and the stories are great. I find it disappointingly funny when people say Tyler Perry's work is for Black people only, simple because it's made by and stars Black people. If there was ever an example that his works are universal and speak to everyone of every culture and background, this is probably the best example (for the time it came out, anyway). By focusing on these four couples, that gives us a better chance of seeing more people. We see people in our lives like Gavin & Patricia and Mike & Sheila. Or, if we didn't know anyone like Angela & Marcus, we could say we know someone like Dianne & Terry. I like that! The comedy and drama in this movie are also really great. Dramatic scenes like the dinner table scenes when all the secrets about the family comes out is incredible! People were howling in the theater when I saw this! A friend told me when she saw it, someone shouted "Thank you!" when Sheila hit Mike with the wine bottle! The comic moments are just as funny. I love Marcus' characteristic of saying "Y'know what I'm sayin'?" when he's lying. You can only imagine how many laughs were roaring in the audience when Angela said "You've never seen Black people on a train? You ain't never heard of the Underground Railroad?!" Or how about the moment where Mike let us know the Constitution says that if a man doesn't get sex from his wife, he has the legal right to get it somewhere else? The movie knows just what to give us and when to give it to us! I love the message at the end. Sheila is able to forgive and move on in a better life instead of seeking revenge or being angry. This is nice because in any other movie, the message of hate and revenge would be promoted. (Remember that movie "John Tucker Must Die?" Yeah...(Eyes roll)) I'm glad, once again, that faith is being brought up in this movie. The more we can show that in film, especially mainstream, the better. And, again, it's not forced. Take it if you want, leave it if you don't.There is one nit-pick I have with this movie. It's not distracting at all, but it is something I noticed: did anyone notice the character change in Trina? In the play, she's portrayed as a selfish, greedy, immoral gold digger. Really! Go watch the play! Here, she's really soften up! Sheila is her friend, and she treats her like one. When Sheila learns that Mike and Trina are sleeping together in the play, Trina isn't sorry about it. She doesn't show any remorse in her actions. In the movie, it's the exact opposite. Look in her eyes, she's sorry about what happened. She seems genuinely sorry she hurt her friend. That's really weird because in the promotional pictures for the movies she's in, she's dressed to reflect the character in the play, not the movie. Again, this does not hurt the movie at all; it's a very small nit-pick! This movie is fantastic! Tyler Perry knows what he's doing, and he does it well...That is, well, check out my other reviews. If you haven't seen this movie, find it, buy it, and watch it! After you see it, watch it with your husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, and even with your friends and family. This is a movie for all! If you've ever been in a relationship, this movie is dedicated to you!
