Camp Hell

At the end of every summer, the children of a Christian community from a suburb of New Jersey attend Camp Hope. They travel deep into the woods far from any distractions the world provides. Here, the children are taught the ways of the Lord, the perils of the flesh, and the horror of the Devil. A charismatic priest leads them in their training. But, he unknowingly has brought something with him, something evil. What was supposed to be a safe place, a spiritual retreat has now turned into a nightmare that not even faith can end.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

Sent to a missionary camp for teens, a man finds himself targeted by a demonic force intent on driving him insane as he tries to follow the strict doctrine imposed by the camp and tries to find what's going on and why he's being targeted without letting the founders know. For a variety of reasons, this was a really lame horror effort. The most egregious of all these flaws is mainly due to the fact that there's just nothing going on here, as this one was just a chore to get through due to its pace. There are so many scenes throughout here that are just utterly torturous to get through, from their initial bunk inspections to the endless camp sing-a-long sessions, the sharing groups and all the different interactions with the authority figures keep this one moving on at a strictly plodding pace. Although it's clearly the film's intention to spell the significance of these activities through their priority and focus, the fact still remains that there's no energy or effort in this one to get through these scenes as instead they are just utterly lifeless throughout here and really showcase their hypocrisy rather than offering up the chance for horror-based scares, leaving this one so agonizingly slow it might lull you to sleep before getting to the first lame scare. That's another really big problem area to overcome here, in that the film is so heavy-handed in its religious nonsense by wandering through the proceedings with more focus on the bible study and religious teachings than the horror scenes so that it doesn't give off all that many chances to do anything that's remotely concerned with being a horror effort as this portrayal of right-in-their-mindset religious teachings are just so much to take at times that it really makes this one so tough to take with no scares and so much nonsensical religious banter. The last big flaw to be found here is the fact that when it really tries to be a horror film in the first half, it really does fail to excite or thrill as the potential demonic manifestations and hallucinations are kept so short it's hard to make out what exactly you're supposed to be afraid of and they're so infrequently observed it tends to forget exactly what it's supposed to be, basically just showing them off in short, shaky spurts that make it impossible to tell what happened during these segments and really just proving to be a real failure on most fronts. Despite these issues holding it back, there are a few areas that do work here. One of the film's saving graces is having a bit more energy in the last half and actually gets the chance to feature some more traditional horror elements with the series of fine temptations and encounters throughout the camp as the series of scenes playing around with the demonic figures in the cabins or going around possessing the teens still there. Even with these positives, it's still far too little too late for this one.Rated R: Language, Mild Violence and a clothed sex scene.

I rated this movie with 2 stars because the special effects are pretty good. However, I was waiting to see what type of psychotic drugs (herbal or man-made) these young adults were being given...to my dismay there were no drugs involved. Not that I wanted these young adults to be given drugs of any kind. The plot itself was a little bit more on the psychological thriller side versus the horror side. The script could have had more cohesiveness than it actually did. It's not a movie that you can just jump in the middle of and have the plot make sense. The producers should have emphasized the fact that Jesse Eisenburg only had a moderate cameo instead of listing him as a "major" character.

I just saw this film and it blew me away. For some people, this film will be a disappointment. Why? Because people are expecting a conventional horror flick. They see "religion" and "demon" and think: "Oh, exorcism movie, not again." This film takes the religion theme to a whole new level. It's basically a social commentary on the dangers of how some people interpret religion. Religion itself has nothing wrong with it, it's how people interpret it that makes it such a touchy subject. The concept of "Saint vs. Sinner" is executed beautifully and it will make you think long after the credits have rolled. If it doesn't, then maybe films like this one simply aren't for you.I've seen many people on here talking about how this is not a horror. This is not true, but not false either. Horror is subjective. Some see blood-and-gore flicks as horror, some say horror is something psychological. Is this a horror film to me? Absolutely. Jump scares, dramatic music and tension doesn't equal horror in my book. That's evoking a natural human reaction known as shock. Jump scares aren't a valid horror device because it doesn't evoke fear. Fear is being afraid of what is to come, not screaming with your heart going 300 BPM because someone just jumped out of a closet to really loud musical effects.Camp Hell is a very interesting and beautifully executed psychological horror film that pushes the boundaries of what people perceive as horror. If this doesn't apply to you, you're watching the wrong genre of films. Harsh? No, simply an opinion. The horror community needs more films like this.

What the hell did I just watch? The only scary thing about this film is that there are really religious freaks out there, who are willing to send their kids to camps like this. The producers of this movie must have known how awful it was, because they put a big picture of "The Social Network Guy," Jesse Eisenberg on the cover, and list him as the star, when he's in the movie for all of 2 minutes. The star is Will Denton, who you may remember from the short lived TV series, Kidnapped. He was pretty good, so was Gossip Girls, Connor Paolo. It's too bad they didn't have an actual script to work with. It really just blows my mind that things like this get made. No one in their right mind would consider this movie worth their time.
