what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

Upchuck Heston does his BAD-ACTING schtick, this time as a pilot of a commercial plane. So REALISTIC how Rosey Grier tries to TACKLE the bomber! Oh yes. And then when the controller Claude Akins BANTERS aimlessly to bring in the airliner just when a small plane wanders into the area. Jim Brolin is the bomber. He has a BRIEFCASE of explosives! Oh no! What the hell are we going to do now? We can't turn the channel! This is a MOVIE! Oh..... my..... GODDDD!!!! I'm sorry. I just can't take it anymore. I must curtail my review. Besides, my Dinty Moore BEEF STEW is ready..... I'm really hungry.

Another Seventies Disaster, a Disaster Movie that Viewers Today Love to Poke Fun and some even call these Things Camp Classics. But in 1972 it was a Stinker and no Amount of Glossing Over its Inanities could make it anything more than a Boring Bunch of Passengers on board a Commercial Flight with a Former Military Pilot hoping to keep Control of "His" Airplane from a Nutjob Determined to Fill Two Hours of Screen Time with Clichéd Scene Chewing among the Clichéd People that Populate these Things.Bland, Hardly Exciting Waste of Time Watching Blurry Flashbacks that Attempt to Add Weight to the Proceedings and come off as nothing more than Sopa Opera Filler. There isn't an Interesting Character Aboard of the 100 Souls and the Tension is too Choreographed and Badly Edited to Amount to Much. This is Anything but Sure Handed Filmmaking. What's with all the Zooms to the Lipstick Counter, wouldn't One be Enough. The Movie has got no Heart and no Intrigue and Yes, it may be Laughable but at the Expense of Your Wasted Time and Trying to get Any Fun from this is Futile. It is just Plain Bad from the Awkward Beginning to the Overly Staged Ending.

I just revisited this after not seeing it since I was 12 in a theater. I must say, this movie holds up quite well. Yes, it is dated in places, but a 40-year old film naturally will be. Good suspense, a little soap opera fluff here and there, but never gets in the way of the story. Much more serious in overall tone than "Airport" from just a couple years earlier. Brolin is excellent as the crazed ex-soldier, and Heston is very good, in probably one of his last good roles. I would recommend this for both disaster-movie buffs, and aviation buffs, as it delivers for both. Also, gotta love Partridge Susan Dey in probably her first motion picture after her TV success.

"Skyjacked" is another disaster movie from the 1970's but the main difference is that the casting is not so famous and the story doesn't take too much time to happen. Charlton Heston plays the captain of an airplane dealing with a risky passenger and his bomb. Following the model of "Airport" in its plot this movie also has the background of some of the characters but it was added during the flight in some weak flashbacks. That was good because the major audience gets easily bored with the long beginning of "Airport" whose airplane took almost an hour to take off. Here the airplane gets up in the air in five minutes and most of the characters were already presented. It had a great beginning but was trapped with a poor ending. Once again the kidnapper of the plane dies and everyone is saved just like in "Airport". By the way I think that in every movie involving airplanes hijacked the hijackers are killed (except for the woman in "Passenger 57" who was arrested). But at least the movie created a certain intrigue in not telling who was the hijacker. Threats starts to appear in the bathroom, then a paper telling to land in some place in Alaska, and then we find out who is. One thing that bothered me is that it was only a lunatic war veteran (played by James Brolin) who wanted take the plane to Moscow for nothing. The good thing is the casting who has a fine performance of Heston (playing the heroic captain), Brolin has some good moments, Susan Dey (in her first film), veteran actor Walter Pidgeon (plays a senator), Roosevelt Grier (the friendly black guy carrying the cello who sits next to the hijacker) and Yvette Mimieux. And of course the funny exaggerations of the story: There's a pregnant woman in her last months of pregnancy on the flight; the senator smoking calmly on the plane after the disaster started; the excessive close-up shots showing a lipstick in the beginning of the movie (this is explained later throughout the movie); and some other moments. Nothing so laughable but funny anyway. Entertaining and enjoyable to any aviation buff. 7/10
