Mum & Dad

Mum and Dad, and their 'adopted' children, Birdie & Elbie, work at the airport. The family live off whatever they scavenge from cargo holds, offices and hotels - including a steady stream of transient workers who populate the airport's soulless hub. When Lena, a young Polish office cleaner, is befriended by Birdie, she gets drawn into a nightmarish world of torture, murder and perversity.

Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

I tried to like it but just couldn't do it. The film is abysmal. There's nothing to raise it out of the depths of boringness it wallows in. No star turn by any of the actors, no surprises in the script or witty banter, no interesting camera work, nothing. It's just one pointless uninspired scene of 'torture' after another and none of it very original, intriguing or interesting. Lots of stupid decisions, bad acting, ham-fisted attempts at scares but in the end it feels like a group of pimply-faced British juveniles put this together in their free time as something to "drool" (I can't put the word I really want to put there) over on their dateless weekends.AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Watch The Loved Ones instead for a decent - no, BRILLIANT - horror movie about messed up families. It's about a million miles ahead of this tripe.

A young immigrant girl working in a hospital finds herself trapped in a home with a very dysfunctional family.The real life events of the likes of Joseph Fritzl make a film like this surprisingly believable. Mum & Dad may not be pushing the boundaries of taste, nor is it anything new or shocking, but it does what it can on its budget. It also has a few sly punches at the disgustingly working class Brits. The Royle Family meets Hostel. The Christmas scene and the petty squabbles, are little comedic moments that suggest this film could have gone for all out satire. The acting is mostly of British-drama-TV caliber, so it's bearable, but not enough for what the film wants to achieve.

I saw this tonight and I have to say as freaky as it was it was well worth a watch.All three actresses played a great part as did the lead men.The actress who played birdie was very convincing as a sicko, although i'm pretty sure shes lovely in real life.The Polish female & mother equally played fantastic and very convincing parts.The Dad who was a proper slim ball and a proper nutter, was portrayed fantastically by a great actor. As was the male who never spoke.....Sick, Nerve Racking and very tense film that makes you wonder if their are people like that out there? Great Film

Mum & Dad is set in London & starts as Polish immigrant Lena (Olga Fedori) start her new cleaning job at Heathrow airport, she is paired up with Birdie (Ainsley Howard) whose brother Elbie (Toby Alexander) also works there. After her shift Lena misses the last bus home & Birdie offers her a place to stay for the night, Lena agrees & goes back to Birdies house where she is knocked unconscious. Waking up Lena finds herself chained up on a dark room, she hears screams & sees body parts everywhere. A big man known as Dad (Perry Benson) & a slim woman known as Mum (Dido Miles) tell Lena that she now lives with them as part of their family, a sadistic family who murder & steal to survive & Lena must either accept her new family & become part of it or become one of Mum & Dad's victims...This British production was written & directed by Steven Sheil & according to him is a British take on the twisted family horror films from the US like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) & Wrong Turn (2003) but with a very quirky British feel to it, which you can't argue with to much once you have seen it I suppose. In fact Mum & Dad feels like a bizarre mix if The Texas Chainsaw Massacre & any old British sit-com that leers between being gross & unsettling one moment & darkly comic & funny the next. A big part of that is the script, from the larger than life Dad with his amusing accent & way of saying things that just make you either laugh or squirm, the Mom is a complete contrast as she is far more refined & sinister while I guess Biride was meant as some sort of twist allergy to the youth of today. Albie is silent throughout the film but seems like he is uncomfortable with his family's actions while Lena is kept high on drugs & tortured in order to turn her into a perfect daughter, like it would. Of course Mum & Dad is not prefect, it's fairly predictable & the low budget keep almost the entire film set within the confines of one semi detached house in London. There's little explanation of how the family got to the point they are, what do they do with the body parts? Why kill people anyway? Why chose Lena as a daughter? Mum & Dad is an enjoyably gross black comic horror that is well worth a watch but I would stop short of calling it great, it's good but not great.Another aspect of Mum & Dad that prevents it from becoming a classic is that relative lack of gore, despite the subject matter there's not that much gore & most of the violence is implied. There's a decapitated head, some body parts, some blood splatter, someone has a knitting needle stuck through their skin & not much else to be honest. The nastiest scene is probably the implied bit when Dad masturbates with a chunk of raw meat & when he puts it down there's a shot of his cum dribbling out of it. Set at the end of Heathrow airport the soundtrack to Mum & Dad is full of noisy air-planes taking off which I am sure was a deliberate to grate on your nerves & make the audience even more on edge & unsettled. The opening credits gave me a headache as it is just literally planes taking off or landing.Shot in seventeen days in London for £100,000 this actually looks really nice, it's well made & quite colourful although I suspect the low budget hampered the special effects which explains why there aren't any. The acting is very good with the entire cast bringing their character's to life with Mum, Dad & Birdie in particular.Mum & Dad is a low budget British twisted family horror thriller that maybe isn't as gory as some might have you believe but has a good script that balances gross out imagery with dark comedy really well. Not a classic or even a great film but a good solid one that's worth a watch.
