Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
When Mariah Carey gets my 'best supporting actor' award for a film, I know I've got a problem.Whoever cooked up this awful story of a tragic widow trying to start fresh as a waitress in an Italian restaurant with a big back door should have saved everyone the pain of enduring its incarnation, which is horribly acted with the cringe-worthy moments rolling in far too often. The closest thing we'll see to realistic drama tickling the mafia's underbelly this side of The Godfather and Scarface is the 'Best of The Sopranos' DVD release. With someone like Mariah Carey in the cast, the least we could have expected is a decent soundtrack to pack a little Marlon Brando in its punch. Unfortunately we're left with something a little short of Danny De Vito.
If you like the real down to earth Mob story about a great Italian spot to eat in Staten Island, N.Y. and great New York actors who can portray love, kindness, hate and blood shed all in one second, you will love this picture. Mira Sorvino,(Meg Kennedy)"The Final Cut",'04, plays a waitress in this Italian establishment along with Mariah Carey,(Raychel),"State Property",'05, who is seen traveling from lower Manhattan to Staten Island via the Ferry, and viewing the former World Trade Center Bldgs. and the Statue of Liberty. Raychel goes to her aunts home and looks for a job and you can imagine where she winds up. Melora Walters,(Kate),"Cold Mountain",'03 is also a waitress and the three of these gals have to fight off the grabbing of their butts and the pouring of mens hands on their bodies. Lots of blood, gore and bullets bouncing off the walls.
I think Mariah Carey's performance this this movie was just OUTSTANDING... I'm very pleased, and would like everyone to know Mariah is becoming such a lovely actress :) this is a TOP movie for those who cry during movies, please caution on watching around children due to profane words. :) Overall this movies is one of my favorites, and i'm sure it will be one of yours. Before watching this movie I had high exceptations, and I wasn't disappointed. If your bored, and have nothing to do. I highly recommend that you go out and buy this movie, trust me it is guaranteed to leave you in tears:) I am a huge Mariah fan and in this movie. Mariah proves that she has the brains, beauty, and talent. This was an outstanding movie great effects, and great graphics.
This movie totally kept me in suspense the entire time! I didn't even realize I cried at the end of the movie when they met for their birthdays - TEAR! When this movie was being made, of course there were rumors of "cat-fights" between Mariah Carey and Mira. I didn't see any animosity between them - like "behind" the scenes - which as really good. The other fact that Mariah didn't try to steal the movie or be a "diva" during the movie - I don't want to mention Glitter but this movie was MUCH better than that movie!!! What really got me into tears was the meat factory - I cried for her, I felt her pain and anguish. Mira facial expressions made you feel all the pain her character went through and you could feel that she had met good friends and you believed they would be friends forever..This movie was excellent!
