The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
I had always been amused by the fact that a whole lot of Indian movies, focusing on organized crimes, aims apparently at a soft side of a cold-blooded killer for women and romance. I am not sure why Shankar must be a Hero or even an anti-hero, just because he loves the lead woman dearly? This needs sorting from the fraternity of directors. And all the terrorists and mafia-men shown are very good-looking menfolk invariably? Is there any specific reason?PS. Why is the poster lacking (Shankar) Ahuja and showing Grover? The story is a predictable one as far as Shankar is concerned. The twist came with the introduction of Akash, more so, of his profession. The greater twist was he was not in love with the lead woman as is usually typecast in many other movies. For a 17-something, Ranaut was a pro! Ahuja had some intense scenes to play but Emraan being Emraan, had to play out the scenes of intimacy. One has to wait and watch Ahuja for further performances.
The movie is nice and very better when compared to stupid Bollywood flicks which they just make trying to earn money. The Best Part of Gangster is the Music and Story , But the screenplay and Direction are not very good. Editing is far behind and probably the worst part of the movie... and ending isn't that powerful as well....But this one is one of the best I have seen from Bollywood. Also I forgot to mention the cast of the movie have performed so well and they all are New comers ...Anyways its a late review..... Movie gets 7.5/10... or 8/10. :) my generosity.
Usually people say Bhatt films have lot of sex, hit music, titillation and no story But this film and some more proved them wrong Actually that 4 things suit Yashraj films moreGangster is one of the best films from Vishesh filmsThe story sounds complicated but the director and screenplay writers make the film one experience to cherishThe love story between Shiny- Kangana, Kangana suddenly falling for Emraan and then her confusion whom to choose and the betrayalAll is handled very well by Anurag BasuThe emotional breakdown of Shiny and the climax is one of the best written scenesAnurag Basu gives his best work so far Music(Pritam) was superb, especially Ya Ali, Bheegi Bheegi, Tu Hi Meri Cinematography made the film more appealing Performances Kangana was one of today's rare heroines, she made her debut in such a spectacular way that all remained stunned and she earned a big name with this film, except her diction and her shouting at placesShiny Ahuja was amazing in his role and performed brilliantly He got least dialogs but did a great job with expressions His emotional breakdown towards the end is one of the best part of the filmEmraan Hashmi surprised, he gave a restrained performance and didn't overact or make funny expressions even once as he normally doesGulshan Grover got a wonderful role and he did a great job despite being a short role
I'm really amazed how many people writing almost poems about this movie, which is boring copy of a copy of a copy. Script is bad and unoriginal, acting pathetic. And I can call director a scene-stealer. Compare the beginning of Gangster with the beginning of Fallen Angels by Kar Wai Wong - even music is almost the same. The only good thing about this movie is that it didn't last for usual three bollywood hours, but even this two hours was very very long...... Thanks God only two. My principle is that I'm watching movie till the end and after that I'm making judgment. So here it is. Oscar for this? Rather Golden Razzie. Beware. 3/10 only
