Undescribable Perfection

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

Two more years and "A Garfield Christmas Special" will celebrate its 30th anniversary. I think the big strength of these Garfield half-hour films is the humour. They always manage to give off a cool vibe of not taking themselves too seriously and yet they deliver a message or contents that are very fitting for the occasions. This little movie here is maybe the perfect example of it and it is possibly also the most famous Garfield short film. I wouldn't say it's the best, but it's still very good. The music does not only include the singing from the characters, but there is always also a catchy little tune in the background that is one of the famous Christmas songs. And the heart in here is for example when Garfields finds a special present for Jon's grandmother. He and Odie spend the holidays with Jon and his family. Jon's father is very funny in here. He always seems like he cannot be arsed to do something and then still does it with the boys somehow making fun of him in a playful manner, for example when he reads the story to them. A really entertaining 24 minutes here and Lorenzo Music's (rip) voice is simply perfect for Garfield. Very much recommended.

Sweet, enjoyable seasonal special in which the cranky orange tabby finds himself rudely awakened from a much too pleasurable dream, by owner Jon who informs him that it's time to go to the family homestead for the holidays. Garfield, of course, is having none of this at first, remaining true to his usual personality, but soon comes around to seeing things in a different light. An excellent voice cast is great fun, with Lorenzo Music in fine form as Garfield. Pat Harrington Jr. is priceless as Dad, as is David L. Lander as Doc Boy. But the true standout is Pat Carroll as Grandma. Grandma ends up stealing the whole show, in some of the comedic moments and most of the dramatic ones. When she mourns the loss of her husband, and when Garfield comes across the perfect present to give to her, it's touching. Grandma's funny moments have her whacking Doc Boy with a spoon when he goes overboard saying Grace at the dinner table, pounding away at the piano like she's Jerry Lee Lewis, and surreptitiously adding chili powder to Mom's sausage gravy. When ever lovable Odie presents Garfield with a useful present, the cat is visibly moved, and he agrees that Christmas should never focus so much on the gift getting / receiving process but the loving.Other hilarious aspects include seeing Dad with the ridiculous over sized hat on his head, or when he's roped into yet another reading of "Binky, the Clown Who Saved Christmas" and Jon and Doc Boy insist he recite a line the way Binky would say it, or when the two of them wake him at 1:30 in the morning, insisting that any time after midnight is technically Christmas morning. Catchy songs, as usual, help a good deal.As an almost life long fan of the strip and the specials, this viewer can tell you that it's always a treat to see these characters brought to life and visit them any time, not just during the various holidays.Eight out of 10.

Is it just me or do the Garfield TV specials seem to have a real emotional touch to them that gives the whole series higher integrity than the average children's animation. If only the movie were this good. It's Xmas time once again and Jon takes Garfield and Odie back home to the farm for a good, old-fashioned country Xmas. Originally against the idea, Garfield quickly becomes accustomed when he remembers how much he likes Grandma. John and brother Doc-Boy behave like kids again and can barely contain their excitement at the forthcoming prezzies (who can?) and what on earth is Odie up to in the barn? The Garfield Christmas Special is a warm, sentimental and meaningful cartoon with great songs (once again) and the kind of everlasting charm most would kill for. Highly recommended!

[I can't be certain, but parts of this review might be considered a spoiler (Brief descriptions of a scene, nothing detailed). Just letting you know ahead of time.]What else can be said? This is a wonderful Christmas classic (I consider it a "classic" even though it was made in the late 80s), one of what I consider the four "must-see" Christmas classics (The other three being "Frosty", "Rudolph" and "Charlie Brown Christmas") worth watching every year. You'll laugh, you'll cry (Or almost cry), you'll feel warm in your heart after viewing this wonderful Garfield Christmas episode. My one and only complaint...sometime during the mid 90s, for no reason whatsoever, portions of the best part of the entire show, the part with Garfield in Grandma's lap, was re-animated. The dialog and audio track is the same, but some of the scene was redrawn with different angles, different character views, and there is even a closeup shot on family pictures is shown. Yes, these may seem to better emphasize the mood of that scene, but in my opinion the scene was fine the way it was, and I hope to someday see the original, unedited version. But, these are just small details, one minor annoyance that doesn't, and shouldn't, affect the overall enjoyment of this heartwarming Christmas classic. Whether it's the original unedited version, the version missing the "piano scene" (Which I actually have never seen, just heard about), or the version with the edited Grandma/Garfield scene, it is almost certain that you will love this show.
