This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
I finally got around to seeing this on Youtube late last month and I found it to be yet another great ABC Weekend Special. This and the sequel, Miss Switch To The Rescue, are perfect for Halloween and would consider them to be among the best to watch around Halloween's month. It centers on the eponymous character who is a good witch and switches from her true identity as a witch or a sorceress to her alter-ego as a schoolteacher as a front or a cover (hence her name). Soon enough, it becomes evident especially to a couple of her students named Rupert and Amelia when they immediately notice that she's no ordinary teacher from all of the magical occurrences they witness in class. After seeing her as a real witch, the two kids' suspicions are officially confirmed. Once this happens, she enlists their help in going against a bad witch named Saturna. This and Miss Switch To The Rescue are a couple more animated specials to add to my favorites list. Neither of the books on which these specials are based I ever read, but they're yet more great Ruby-Spears productions re-imagined into their own version. I concur with one of the other reviewers of this. That not just this, but the sequel also needs to be brought to DVD. Not separately, but what would be even better is if they could be released as a back-to-back double feature pack or set. Brilliantly done, a fantastical adventure.
I tell you watching Saturday Morning Special's like this were a real treat. The only problem was the commercials! Love how their creative teacher helps the school win a football game and wipes the blackboard clean. The kids figure it out pretty quickly that Miss Switch is really.. you guessed it.. a WITCH! I wish they had this on DVD or even VHS anywhere so my kids could watch it. I found Riki Tiki Tavi but not this.HINT HINT to the people that have this prize in your possession. It will sell and people will rent or buy it for their children and grandchildren! Please make the DVD already.
I watched this many times as a kid, and just loved it!! Its right up there with Rikki Tikki Tavi as one of my all time favorite Animated Shorts. It is a great fantasy/action adventure for kids. The animation quality was typical of TV animation at the time, but the story is one that keeps the watcher hooked. A definite must see for any animation fan.
