Absolutely brilliant
It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Once upon a time, I felt like watching a movie. I was in the mood for horror, yet I couldn't think of anything I was particularly itching to see. I began to browse the web for suggestions, and stumbled upon a film I had never heard of before. I went to my local movie rental store, rented it, and went home to watch it. What I witnessed was one of the most unexpectedly enjoyable films I ever had the joy of experiencing. That film was Murder Party.Murder Party is the story of a loser named Chris who finds a card on the ground that invites whoever finds it to a Halloween celebration. Since he has nothing else to do that night, he decides to throw a costume together and attend. He soon finds out that he has made a dire mistake, putting his fate in the hands of murderous college students who want to kill him as art. What's simply wonderful about this film is how they manage Horror-Comedy. Most films in that sub-genre, such as Evil Dead II or Dead Alive (both great), derive humor from the insane and ridiculous special effects and scenarios they can pull off. While some of that is present in Murder Party, the film mostly relies on the distinct weirdness of each character and their motivations. It's an interesting spin on the formula. The insanity really comes in later in the story, but telling why would be a spoiler.Overall, this is an extremely impressive film. Not only due to the fact that it was made independently and that it technically had no budget, but also because the filmmakers brushed the limitations aside and created a thoroughly fun and enjoyable experience by focusing on the writing, directing, and acting more so than the effects. It's goofy. It's tense. It's Murder Party.
I had been promised a 'spoofy', gory parody. It was just really boring all the freaking time. It didn't make me laugh, once. This was supposed to be a comedy, right?I had the misfortune of being recommended to watch this atrocity last Halloween, so I did. I sat through the whole thing feeling unclean the whole way through. It was very unpleasant to look at, not in a dark or creepy kind of way like in movies such as The Omen (1976) or The Fly, both of which are great and disturbing. The main character was a bore, just someone leading a quiet life and then put into a strange situation. But unlike following him through a journey like in something such as God Bless America (2011) and understanding him going psychotic, we just watch him witness the horrors that unfold throughout the night. The other characters I barely remember. I guess they just start murdering each other and we're supposed to root for certain ones, but you won't care because they're all equally annoying throughout. So when they get killed off in (I must admit) some well thought out fashion, you will not have been invested enough in them to feel anything. The 'plot' is about as bland as they get; guy gets abducted and then watches his captors argue for a while trying to escape a couple times. Eventually everyone tries to kill each other, resulting in our main character facing off against one guy. Then he kills him; the end. I might have made a couple of mistakes in this synopsis, but whatever. It's not like there was that much of it to begin with.So to summarise in short; don't watch. In long; really don't watch this turd.
Once in a while, you come across an unknown indie film that is so good that you want to take it upon yourself to spread the word. Murder Party is one of those gems. This movie is funny, gory, smart and totally original. The writing is excellent and the characters are so great. I really want people to check this out because it's so good. I don't want to tell you all too much about the plot of the movie. Murder Party is so much better if you go in not knowing anything. But I will tell you that most people that watch this movie will want to copy the Halloween costumes because they are so awesome! I enjoyed this movie so much that I watched all the extras on the DVD, something I hardly ever do. The extras are excellent and the Director/Writer, Jeremy Saulnier's biography is wonderful. I really hope he continues to make more films because he is really talented! Please like me on Facebook! Originality scores big points with me and 'Murder Party' has that in spades. Its dark humor and plot twists elevates it to near perfection. The premise is really pretty straightforward and the majority of the film takes place in one room. So simple and so bloody brilliant! This film is hilarious and made me laugh out loud several times. The humor is wickedly dark and the dialog is sharp as a razor. The writing really was excellent and the group of actors deliver their lines perfectly. The group of artists are pretentious and self involved, but their inane chatter was highly entertaining. After the first half of the film I was thinking, I am totally digging this, but I'm not sure I would call it a horror film. But by the time the credits role it absolutely solidifies its placement in the genre. It is cheeky as hell and those final scenes were quite spectacularly bloody and extremely rewarding. Highly recommended! 'Murder Party' deserves a cult following, and I can't suggest more enthusiastically that you give this one a try next time you're looking for a rental.
