I love this movie so much

Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

I always thought Peter Bogdanovich was a great director; what with films like THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, WHAT'S UP DOC?, and PAPER MOON. What happened to him? This film was totally unwatchable. What a waste of time and what is Audrey Hepburn doing in crap like this? Is this suppose to be a romantic comedy? There was nothing funny about this picture, unless you like seeing John Ritter falling down a lot. This movie is a total bore. Anyone who likes this picture needs to get out more. I can see why this film bombed at the box office and pretty much killed Bogdanovich's career. Didn't the actors read the script before committing themselves to this project? Didn't anyone view this picture for releasing it to the public? What a shame!

How this film could get a rating of 6.2 on this site is a mystery to me. It's crystal clear why this film bombed upon release. It's the least funny romantic comedy ever made!The people who worked making it had a little too much fun and thought they were being adorable. There's hardly any plot - just people falling in love and bantering. So many bad ideas, especially the title which is so inappropriate it actually fits this terrible comedy!Bogdanovich was too much in love making this film, blinding him. It's embarrassing to see him trying to put himself in the movie in John Ritters character and having Colleeen Camp pretending to be Cybill Shepherd pretending to be a screwball comedienne!What makes this film interesting, though, is all the beautiful women displayed in front of the camera. Audrey Hepbun, Patti Hansen and Dorothy Stratten are gorgeous. Then there are the horrifying ones like the one playing the kid in the film and...Blaine Novak.

They All Laughed (1981)Peter Bogdanovich had directed two real classics of 1970s American Cinema before this one, The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon. Both are heartfelt, somewhat romanticized, and sensitive movies. That's all I knew of him before seeing They All Laughed, and I was surprised at the choppy, slight, throwaway quality to it all. The acting varies hugely from John Ritter being vaguely comic to Audrey Hepburn (yes!) being vaguely Audrey Hepburn. Ritter is used too much and Hepburn not enough. Ben Gazzara can be terrific but here he is supposed to be the stellar ladies man, cool and profound and worldly, and he doesn't pull it off, which becomes an embarrassment. Add some minor characters really struggling, and you begin to think it isn't the acting, but the directing, that keeps it from taking off.There are several layered plots at work here, and the stuttered construction might have held water with more pieces intact. But more to the point might be the basic premise of the plot or plots. There is genuine adolescent girl watching (and drooling), there is an adult love affair that doesn't quite make sense, there is a crime or two at work behind the scenes (and taxis and helicopters and such). It's cobbled together and filmed rather routinely and in general leaves you feeling disoriented and sorry you got involved. Yeah, that disappointing.

Peter Bogdonavich has made a handful of truly great films, and THEY ALL LAUGHED is one of his best. The cast couldn't be better equipped to play this light but slightly bittersweet screwball comedy. Interestingly enough, the witty, light touch Bogdonavich so effortlessly employs gives the film a rather disarming emotional core. Fresh and immediate, the film starts with absolutely no explanation. There's no soundtrack music to cue us. We meet the characters in action, and as Bogdonavich glides down the streets of New York, the film unfolds effortlessly. Robby Muller's camera captures it all with an understated simplicity that seems accidental, but surely isn't. The cast is terrific. In every way, a classic.
