Death to Prom

Two best friends make the best of going to high school by dreaming up fashion magazine photo shoots, and bribing their siblings to model for them.  René indulges all his fantasies and loves designing clothes. Frankie lives for her camera and punk rock. They both fall for Sasha, the shy soccer player with a soft spot for poems by Pushkin. Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

"Death to Prom" is a tale of modern teenagers making the best of their high school years by embracing their identities and their passions. Frankie and Rene are comfortable with who they are and don't feel the need to conform to with other students, so when a popular soccer player infiltrates their practically perfect duo their boat is more than a little rocked. This Minnesota-based film was actually filmed in Minnesota which made the movie extra spectacular. Far from Fargo and East-Jesus No Where, Minneapolis makes strong appearances boasting its quality scenery from tower tops to store fronts and of course, the city skyline. The smooth transitions from scene to scene and beautiful soundtrack enhanced the story-line. "Unexplainable Stories" by Cloud Cult supported Sasha upon his entrance to talk to Frankie at the flower shop and built hopeful suspense for the audience. "Death to Prom" accurately reflects the awkwardness of the teenage years with minimal use of technology so those of us who survived teenage years without social media outlets (thank goodness) can relate. If you are a teenager or were a teenager, see this film. Although I don't want to go back in time, I do wish I lived my high-school life a little more Frankie and Rene-style. If you ever wanted to get a hug from the big screen, here is your chance: it is currently playing at the theater in the Mall of America. Leave the film feeling warm & fuzzy, loved, and hugged.

If you're looking for a modern day twist on a familiar story about growing up and learning to accept and be honest about who you are - along with being non-judgmental and accepting of others - this movie will hit the spot! The moviegoer is brought on a journey of adolescent self-discovery and risk taking, with the usual ups and downs that come with those activities. Death to Prom is a wonderful trip back in time, to when we were all wide open to new experiences and forming the foundations of how we will live our lives as adults. There are some great shots of Minneapolis - WHOO HOO! - and a wonderful supporting cast to the main three actors. If you're not usually a dreamer, this movie will give you a little insight into how they think and maybe even start you dreaming as well... Well done!

That's pretty much what the story is. It's clean cut and pure fun in a world not ran by Jerry Folwell. The story is about two high school kids who have a crush on the same guy. One boy, Rene, and one girl Frankie, both get a crush on Sasha, who isn't exactly clear on where he stands. What results is an often funny and dynamic story that leaves you wanting more. Death to Prom is an independent feature film that works better than a lot of independent films I've seen recently. That's because it's actually funny, the acting isn't half bad and well because the story works. It doesn't get over it's head or try and do too much. The editing and sound are clean. The soundtrack works. The color is great. The screenplay won the Mcknight Fellowship from the IFC and Coppola's Zoetrope contest. From there Stenerson decided to direct the project by himself and it's been playing at various festivals since last fall. Catch it at a festival if you can!
