The Mystery of Agatha Christie, With David Suchet

David Suchet, TV's Poirot, has spent more of his life acting out the plots and dramas created by Agatha Christie than anyone else in the world. Suchet is embarking on a journey to learn more about the woman who created Poirot and whose books remain outsold only by Shakespeare and the Bible. Suchet's journey takes him to the places Christie lived, the landscapes that inspired her and to meetings with people who knew the woman behind the fame and those inspired by her extraordinary legacy. He explores the close links between Christie's extraordinary life and her work and discovers what it was about the woman from a small seaside town that allowed her to become the best-selling murder mystery writer in history.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

The stories of Agatha Christie, the greatest crime novelist over last decade, have been played again and again at China's theater, which indicates how popular she still is in people's minds. That prompts me to wonder how a woman could start to write about crimes, where her inspirations came from, and most importantly, why she could be so productive-at a time when there's even no computer or internet.A great documentary that host by the leading character and most well-known detective of her books P, visited Agatha's hometown, and places she had traveled in her lifetime, trying to lift up the mysteries of the Lady.Agatha had a wonderful, carefree childhood, as she wrote in her biography. She expressed her deepest gratitude to her mother, who discourage her to get "normal" education until she was eight years old. But Agatha showed her enormous curiosity about the world and read a lot by herself. It is hard to tell what enforced a little girl to get interested in crimes. The documentary did not illustrate clearly, but from her biography, Agatha said she had nightmare about guns, so maybe from that time, "evilness and dark-sides" were incepted into her sub-conscience. Not until Agatha graduated from college in Paris, she began to write her first book. In Agatha's stories, her inspirations about setting, the ways of poisoning, etc mainly came from the special time she experienced-the First and Second World War, when she temporarily worked as a nurse at pharmacy. She learned a lot about chemistry(drugs and poisoning) and used them into her stories.Agatha was not only a novelist, but an adventurer. After her mom died and her first husband had an affair with another woman, the poor lady was in deep sorrow and chose to leave home alone. Her "disappearance" soon made newspaper headline and hundreds of police officers set out to search for her. She was finally found at a hotel but that was just the beginning of her adventurous life.Agatha was fascinated by the East when she first arrived at Turkey, she took the famous Orient Express-which turned out to be the setting of her story The Murder on Orient Express. In Turkey, she also met her second husband- an archaeologist, who brought her travel around. The journey in the east opened her eyes and her books, set at many Eastern countries, became fairly distinctive. For me personally, I was amazed by her talent and writing techniques that she could perfectly mix her personal experiences with crimes-no matter what kind of experience.Agatha lived a long life-she died in 85, with xx novels and xx short stories published. Until now, a lot of her stories were made into movies and her dramas are still played in theaters. One of the most important "secret of her success", as the documentary concludes at last, was her "simplicity"-her story structures, plots, and characters…etc. Even for the most complicated stories, it is easy for readers with all the ages to understand, and that of course, stunned out all the other crimes stories at the same time.

If you have watched David Suchet's career as the actor who plays Hercule Poirot, you will no doubt enjoy this behind the scenes documentary on the writer Agatha Chrisitie, creator of of the eccentric Belgian detective. David Suchet meets Christie's grandson and looks at some of the memorabilia of Agatha Christie's life. Since she enabled what was a good portion of his acting career, Suchet is fascinated by Christie and so was I as a viewer of the many movies he has made, some 70 in all as the famous detective. The documentary gives us the full biography of Christie, who grew up on the seaside in the south of England, where many of her novels are located. We find out about her vivid imagination and her love of the sea. We also see entries in her journals and photos from her earliest childhood. Her first marriage ended in divorce from the man she loved and who was with her for her initial success. When she found out that her husband wanted to leave her, Agatha completely lost it and went missing. This led to a massive search which turned up her missing car and more time searching until eventually she was spotted in a rural hotel. The mystery of what happened to Agatha Christie was a national news story that went on for some time and in fact, hope had begun to fade. As pointed out in the documentary, she never revealed what happened but it is thought to be a breakdown when her world was suddenly turned upside down. She did recover of course and married an archaeologist who took her to the Middle East on his travels, where she discovered new settings for her novels. Her writing continued and was prolific for over five decades and we see the fame that accompanied her. This included her best selling novels and her stage plays with the long-running The Mousetrap, the most famous. She spent time during the first war as a nurse and working in a pharmacy became familiar with poisons, which she used in her novels as her prime method for murder. Her life was quite happy through her childhood and adult life, although she did suffer the loss of her beloved father at ten and of course, the failure of her first marriage. I always admired Christie and felt she had a knack for writing that appealed to a mass audience and could capture the imagination of a broad public. This was confirmed in the show which gives a wonderfully detailed look at her life and her writings.
