Premutos: The Fallen Angel

Premutos is the first of the fallen Angels, even before Lucifer. His Goal is to rule the world, the living and the dead. His son should pave the way for him and appears arbitrary throughout human history and is then recognized as some kind of monster. In the present time, a young man living in Germany begins to suffer from visionary flashbacks - of the lives he lived in the past as Premutos' son! He remembers how he appeared in the middle age, when mankind suffered from pestilence and during WWII in Russia. On his (earthly) father's birthday, a case containing some strange old book and a yellow potion is found in their garden, which was hidden by some peasant in 1943, who experimented with witchery in order to re-animate his deceased wife. Whe the young man gets in touch with the book and some of the yellow potion, he mutates into a monster and awakens an army of zombies, ready to bring back the fallen Angel Premutos and to disturb the little birthday party

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

The story goes something like this. Premutos, a fallen angel (before Satan), wants to rule the living and dead of the world and tries to do so throughout history, possessing a guy of the same bloodline. Now in present time he comes back again by accident of the current guy in this cursed family. The story really doesn't matter though. This movie is a mess and I mean that in several ways. The acting, story, and budget are Troma level or worse. In all fairness, the story may have been damaged in the translation though. It's another type of mess that makes this film so infamous though. It is a huge splatterfest! This is where the film shines. It has beheadings, dismemberment, hundreds of bullet shots, full body explosions, and much more. Clearly, this is what most of the budget went to. You will also see slow motion gunplay like in John Woo's films and comedic lines and gore like in Peter Jackson's early films. Speaking of Jackson, Braindead/Dead Alive (1992) is often compared with Premutos because they are so similar. While Premutos may be a little bit darker in tone at times, I think Braindead easily beats it in every area including gore. The body counter at the end of Premutos was pretty cool though. The DVD had a 50-minute "making of" feature that seemed pretty interesting, at least the bit of it I watched. Overall, if you liked Braindead, you might want to check this out sometime.

The german gore scene is not very big - the most movies go on the account of three directors: Jörg Buttgereit, Andreas Schnaas and Olaf Ittenbach. The later has been the most active in the last years, and it seems that his movies become (slightly) more professional. "Premutos" has a strange plot about a boy, who finds a magic book and summons an satanic angel called Premutos. But in fact it is kind of a funny movie with a lot of people being transformed to Zombies, who attack a small family. The movie contains a lot of gore; the humour does not function every time, and mostly the film is very gore. Scenes which I remind positive:+ The films (anti)hero Mathias gets kicked in the balls when playing soccer and is then examined very gay urologist - to me the most funny scene in the movie. And it leads to the key scene - when he glues some old liquid to his balls, he is turning to the Überzombie. + In another scene the family celebrates the birthday of Walter, Mathias father. One guest is digging a booger out of his nose, forming it to a little ball and then flicks it into the mouth of his woman, who is suppressing him and also talking all the time. + There is one black actor, and I think even in the German version they dubbed him, because he has two voices - one with a very broad bavarian dialect, one in "normal" germanBut these are only the best scenes. I did not like the final, when they take a tank to kill the zombies - it was just tooo unlikely and I didnot think it was very funny. And also very bad are the "historical" scenes of the subplot, which are based in the Time after Jesus Christs death and the battle of Stalingrad. Oh, and I think some of the side actors are even for a gore film to bad.

Very original Splatterfest gore flick from Germany, clocking in at around 110 minutes in the uncut version. Possibly one of the goriest movies ever made...much more so than 'Dead Alive' or 'Evil Dead'. The plotline is much like 'Night Of The Living Dead' on Acid. Some really bizarre things happen in the script! It has many unique camera angles, some unique scenes and several highly comedic moments. The domestic Shock-O-Rama DVD release however is another story. It markets itself as having an English dubbed version and the original German audio version. The bad thing is, the German version has no English subtitles at all. This is pathetic since it is aimed at the USA market. Additionally it say that the DVD includes a "Full Color Collectible Booklet". Guess what...no booklet in mine, and it was factory sealed. The English audio dub is pretty laughable. It has a few vocal talents such as Brinke Stevens, Ariauna Albright, and J.R. Bookwalter. But it looks like a bad 70's Kung Fu dubbed movie. The sync is horrible, the voices don't even begin to seem credible for the onscreen characters. The sound effects and foley work in the English dub is outright horrible. The stereo effects in the English dub are equally terrible, it would have sounded better in plain Mono sound! If you switch between the German and English audio tracks it becomes even more apparent. The DVD has a vaguely interesting 50 minute "behind the scenes" featurette in German originally, but dubbed into English by one translator speaking for everyone. He pauses a lot during speaking, so i assume he was translating on the moment. I would have much rather just viewed subtitles.Overall, a well made and unique Horror film from Germany. However, unless you speak fluent German the USA issued DVD will make you want to kill the idiot who decided to dub the movie into English!

Watching this film you'll probably feel the urge to skip the "story" parts by using your fast forward button. Very similar to pr0n movies, the story between the "real" scenes is more than boring and with actors even worse than in pr0n (which has its own unintentional humor sometimes). Some actors don't fit their role because of their age - but with so many flaws in the movie this is one of the minor problems. What you can imagine is that Olaf Ittenbach is really ambitious and gave his "Herzblut" for this production. That's something that should be supported, because with a real budget I think he would make incredible movies. Nevertheless, some gore scenes in the movie are quite good and what the film doesn't lack of is blood, blood and then: more blood...
