The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

I'd initially avoided Those People due to some well written IMDb reviews from users who essentially hated the film or at best found it lacking. But I eventually decide to give the film a shot and was quite surprised. The story is mainly about one character, art school student Charlie, finally choosing to get out of the shadow and influence of his best friend, rich kid Sebastian, a guy he loves dearly but who is an adult spoiled brat. (In case you missed it: Hint hint, nudge nudge...Brideshead, yeah?)Other People has an intimate, almost claustrophobic look to it, most scenes happen at night and often in small, dark toned interiors. The film is set in the fall and winter, a great time to watch it.

if you are under 18 you MIGHT like it because it's really a teen story. The plot, conversations and characters are too dull and boring and the movie goes by so slow and full of events we have seen thousand times in movies...it's timid and dramatized excessively in an amateur and empty way...not worth watching at all

I gave this a good rating because it touched a theme which is important in many gay men's lives. The script falls short only in its attempt to make the characters glamorous. This is a typical gay cinema trap that has turned many good scripts into boiler plates. Resolving the conflict between first adolescent love and first adult love is a passage for many gay men. It can extend into early adulthood because gay men seldom live in an environment where it can resolve itself fully in teen years.I was so glad to see Haaz Sleiman in the role of the mature gay lover. I have been a fan since seeing him in "Nurse Jackie". I hope to see him with more central roles in features. Jason Ralph is magnetic. The camera loves his expressive face. Jonathan Gordon did great puppy dog. The supporting cast was a bit iffy. They seemed to be gearing their delivery for what they perceived as a melodramatically inclined (camp) gay audience. Unfortunate. This brought the whole production down to a more unremarkable gay-film feel. A good Netflix experience. A good addition to their already extensive gay collection. Not of the quality of "Stranger by the Lake" or "A Single Man".

The above line, spoken by the mother of one of the film's main characters seems to sum up one of the film's many rather deep messages: Life can kick you in the head, you've got to deal with it with some dignity and respect and be brave enough to move on. OK, so that wasn't as poetic as I'd originally intended, but I'm at a loss for intelligent words on how to describe this incredibly moving film. Written and directed by the preternaturally gifted Joey Kuhn, THOSE PEOPLE is a rare beast in indie "queer" cinema. First, the characters just happen to be gay, the film doesn't revolve around any dramatic revelation in that part of their lives. I can't express how refreshing this is for gay characters to not be traumatized by their sexual orientation. Nobody has AIDS, their parents don't reject them because they're gay, and they're not having a dramatic coming out. Moving beyond that, there are not stereotypical characters, of any sexual orientation. Sure, the group of friends has a "Token straight friend" but there's a single joke there as friends will make and it doesn't go any farther than that. Nobody falls in love with the straight friend, and nobody is tortured by the guy, which is another common story route in movies "like this". Only that's another revelation about this movie. There isn't anything remotely like this, at least that I've seen in recent "queer cinema". I'm rambling now, so just go seek this movie out, watch it, and recommend it again and again to anyone who will listen. It's that damned good. Also, don't be put off or tricked by the description that it's a film about a love triangle, because it's so much more, and even that description is spurious at best.
