I love this movie so much
Plenty to Like, Plenty to Dislike
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I saw this movie because I'm a RWJ subscriber and I like his work. But this movie makes me want to have Riley's powers so I could spend my last hour doing something useful instead of seeing this stupid web-series. What's wrong with it? Characters and Acting - Just horrible. Anna Akana (Riley) was such a bad actress, I didn't expect that. Then, the characters are just very clichéd. The Gothic girl, the gay guys, and the person who puts the bomb on the college has a camouflage jacket!!! Really??? Ready on the first act I already knew that he was the guy that tried to explode everything.Story - Wow, the plot holes are huge! The story is overused in other movies, everything is predictable, and with so many thing to pick with the rewind powers, the story is about a girl that wants to save the prom and another girl that wants to commit suicide. Perfect for a Disney Channel show...I gave 2 out of 10 because of the music, with good tracks chosen. RWJ, you have to do much better next time. Anna, please stop acting, you're no good.
It's a 5 because i like and support Ana and Ray but it should have been a 4. The acting was in most cases forced but i can forgive that seeing how they were at their first 'serious' attempt, the 'hints' it gave were too obvious and this was done through some long shots that seem out of place. The story of the time traveler is nothing new for anyone and it brings nothing new to the table (the same side effect :bleeding nose and headache). It's because they were a bunch of amateurs i expected something original but it's just your average teenage drama mixed with time travel.
I was aware of the works of Ray, I tend to like his projects, he is a cool guy and all. When he first shared a preview or teaser for his movie I was kinda excited, I thought this would work and would be some interesting stuff. Unfortunately this is a blatant case of "all the good bits are in the trailer". This movie is simply painful to watch, not because of the cinematography or the acting, I can stand that, but because of the story. This is a drama/sci-fi but who the hell is it targeted to? What is the drama? The prom? What is this, high school musical all over again with super powers? BEWARE--- SPOILERS COME HERE ---BEWARE: So the girl has a power to rewind time, does all silly stuff for comedy purposes, that's OK, all super-heroes like that are stupid. I'm not even going to go into why does not she consider winning the lottery for herself and not having to have a job for the rest of her life, but hey, as I said, super-heroes of the kind are stupid. The major drawback comes when the story takes the spin of the suicidal girl. I seriously question the intelligence of Riley at that point. So she decides to save a girl from committing suicide by rewinding and befriending her. What, the, actual, F. Is she really retarded? Hurr, I want to help people so I better go back in time and prevent 1 suicide. Good job hero, of all the things to do, lets do that. And then the whole "saving one life can take away another" just because the two gay boys don't meet. For f*** sake it gets worse and worse. I would have stopped watching at this point has it not been for Ray. But I'll permit to stop my review here because I think I make enough of a point. ---SPOILERS END---So the problem of this movie is neither the cinematography nor the acting. The problem is that this story is surreal and cold, it is a struggle to identify oneself with any character or to feel for any of them.I do understand that this is an indie movie, but there has been movies shot in the backyard of the directors house that I still liked. Or lets take "The Gamers: Dorkeness Rising" which is an indie movie my friends made me watch. I don't even like or know what Dungeons and Dragons is and yet I liked that movie, that's what. Or lets take what Freddie Wong does, which is also indie and is also rather cool.I don't have a problem with Drama either, I like me a good Drama. This movie fails in my eyes because I don't understand what is the target audience, what is the moral behind the rather stupid story or what is the point of it all. It is an insult to sci-fi, and drama. A rather disappointing debut for Ray as director, I'm sorry to say. The only thing they deserve some kudos is for treating homosexuality without prejudice, about time we get used to homosexuality and see it as normal as it is.
This is a web series directed by Ray William Johnson whom people may recognize from his show, "Equals 3", and it tries really hard to be dramatic but the acting, situations and script just don't let it reach that level. The performances here are pretty mediocre and the script is cringe-worthy at times. The only promising performances are given by the two main actors, Anna Akana, who wrote this web series, and Lamar Legend, who plays her gay bff. One good thing came out of this and that is that the director, Ray, showed us how good a show with a 100k budget can look, the web series looks good with some effective lighting and decent cinematography.Overall this is a 4 out of 10 from me because it is a flat out mediocre show, the budget is stretched thing and looks good sometimes but thee writing and acting really puled it down, what surprises me is that at the time that this review was written, this series had an 8.9 score which is a very high score.
