One of the worst movies I've ever seen
Memorable, crazy movie
It is a performances centric movie
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
This movie's lead-up was pretty decent. I stopped even wondering if it would be scary after the section where the four student "ghost hunters" talk on camera about why they're qualified to investigate a haunted house. That's not the part that stopped me. The part that stopped me was when the four "qualified" individuals all broke down and started throwing panic fits after being in the house for less then five minutes when a poorly attached chandelier falls on the ground when they try to turn on the lights in that room and short the connection. They displayed the same lack of qualification throughout the movie. That being said, the movie was entertaining enough that I finished watching it. There are some clever points in the story and the acting was pretty good for low-budget.
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is a great movie but it has a lot to answer for. This is one of the cheap knock-offs to follow in the wake of the surprise hit of '99, but like all of those rip-offs, it lacks the wit, originality, and ingenuity of the original fear flick. Using the same type of story – teenagers spending the night in a location haunted by terrible crimes of the past – this is an obvious, but adequate film, worth watching for novelty value alone. The house is pretty creepy in itself and the leads are surprisingly likable, especially when confronted with flying chairs and – in the film's creepiest moment – uncovering a wrapped doll that looks like the rotted corpse of a baby. Best not to mention the ultra-cheesy 'jumping cat' scare, though. The acting is quite basic and falls apart at the finale – caught between the terribly fake screaming of the obligatory bimbo and the lead guy pretending to be scared, and unable to make it up a staircase – I didn't know where to turn. It is in this finale that things really implode – gory arms and unseen torturers are just plain rubbish. The resulting experience is a mildly frightening, very long wait (although not too long at 76 minutes) for an unsatisfying payoff. Not an overly rewarding experience.
There are a lot of reviews up here about people hating this movie, that the acting is horrible, that it is all trope, that is has campy effect, etc. etc. All of these things are true. In the wreckage of this film, is something truly enjoyable. Humor. Whether it was intentional or not, this movie is hilarious. From bad writing ("I sense a presence in this room", "It was me, i farted") to bad acting, my friends and I had ourselves a good laugh. The St.Francisville Experiment is one of those movies that should not be taken for face value, and is good fun to force your friends to watch so they can writhe in agony as you have done when you watched. If you are looking for a good 'found video' movie, this isn't it. If you are looking for a fun time because its so bad its good, then give it a watch.
I have liked films by Ted Nicolaou in the past, but this will not rank as one of them.I give this this movie one star - strictly on the fact that they told the real New Orleans story of Madame LaLaurie.Watching the Blair Witch rip-off "The St. Francisville Experiment (2000)" and this movie is just so bad it's laughable. One guy walks around saying "I love the ghosts" to stay positive, a girl is a total basket case the entire time, at one point she exclaims, "Omg a dead bird! and the other girl asks, "How dead is it?" All the actors are terrible, and the screenplay is atrocious. I think the only good thing I can say about this movie is, nope I got nothing.Every thing the characters did in The St Francisville Experiment contradicted everything else they did or said at each moment... they are introduced as serious investigator friends, but it becomes clear in the first scene in the house they don't know each other at all and are complete amateurs, then one says to share all their feelings, so the one girl says a prayer by herself for herself which suddenly everyone is okay with, then they say as long as we stick together we should be able to handle this, so what do they do? They split up to go cleanse the house, all the rooms simultaneously... This movie was like that contradiction poem we heard as little kids, the one that goes... admission is free pay at the door, grab a chair and sit on the floor... this was the absolute contradiction haunting movie. The climax itself had such potential, but just left me feeling upset.Spoilers Ahead ---------------------------------------------- So many clichés and contradictions in this film, from the totally healthy cat that jumps out of an Armoire, a falling chandelier, non-cohesive emotions from scene to scene, saying lets stick together because that's how we'll be successful here, then splitting up, saying lets share all of our emotions so one girl prays by herself? The ending has one room shaking, an arm reaches for one girl, that was dull, another gets dragged, they find the guy who was in the attic, chained in the basement hidden medical room, and Ryan tied to a table? The only ghost you see is a bit of mist that quickly dissipates....Episodes of Ghost Adventures are scarier than this movie.I cannot recommend this movie to anyone.1/10
