Simply Perfect
Fantastic!
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Forget about the lurid title, it's really something of a documentary on mid-20th century American culture in the manner of a Frederick Wiseman docu. Mr. Kirk spends most of the film in a very conservative blue suit playing a very serious Martian. Mr. Kirk has nothing to be ashamed of. He gives a lecture to children at a planetarium about what what was believed about Mars at the time, and he falls in love with Yvonne Craig proving Martians, (who spout no antennas) are in fact humans. There is an extended scene at a strip club and and even longer scene at a Baylor football game. And the Martians break into a men's clothing store and select a very conservative look that fits right in with the code of how mid century American men should look. There are a couple of inadvertently funny lines delivered with deadpan earnestness but otherwise this is not like the "The Attack of The Crab Monsters" which Tommy Kirk takes Deborah Walley to see in the film " It's a Bikini World." Mr, Kirk looked great in this film like Shia LaBoeuf before his breakdown and David Gordon Levitt. He is a very talented man (his face is always expressive) who did as much with even this as he could, whose personal identity cost him his career before it was cool to have an afternoon TV show or get married. And Mr. Kirk is very much alive and I trust happy and really Mr. Kirk this innocuous movie is nothing to be ashamed of . You're the best. TCM should be honoring you for your body of work as child actor, adolescent and young man.
The message coming from space is clear Mars Needs Women! A genetic malfunction has lead to a shortage of Martian women capable of producing offspring. An exploratory force is sent to Earth to collect a few suitable specimens to be used in reproductive experiments on Mars. The Martian scheme is going as planned until the Martian leader named Dop begins to fall for an Earth woman. His infatuation with the woman puts the entire Martian plan in question. Those crazy days of political incorrectness that were the 60s. It was a time when a movie about the abduction and rape of a group of women could be considered "family" entertainment. It was a time when a doctor specializing in space medicine was known first and foremost as a "stunning brunette". She even insists on calling herself a "pretty girl with a PhD". It certainly was a very different age.For a movie that stars Tommy Kirk and Yvonne Craig, I was expecting something along the lines of an intergalactic beach movie. I expected something light-hearted and fun. Mars Needs Women couldn't be much further from fun if it tried. It's too serious for its own good. So instead of fun, the movie dishes up a heaping helping of boredom. The whole concept behind the movie is too silly to attempt to play it this straight. Everyone involved needed to lighten up. Had they done so, Mars Needs Women might not have been so terribly dull and bad.
That still belongs to "Salo".A bunch of Martians (led by Tommy Kirk) land on Earth. Their plan is to abduct women, bring them to Mars, and use them to keep their population growing. They each hunt down women successfully but Kirk falls in love with his prey Dr. Bolen (Yvonne Craig). Can he bring her with him or stay on Earth with her? With a title like that you would expect this movie to be pure camp. Surprisingly, it isn't! Everything is played straight-faced with absolutely no joking or winking at the audience. Now this movie is terrible--there's tons of stock footage (which easily take up most of the running time); a LOONGGGG strip sequence; dreadful acting (although Kirk and Craig do try); inept direction; bad sound (I couldn't hear some of the dialogue--no loss); hilariously inappropriate music and horrendous "special" effects (wait till you see the Martian spaceship!). The script is actually OK--it's not stupid just dull. There are plenty of dull spots in this movie but still, there are some moments to treasure--the introduction of Dr. Bolen on TV is hysterical and I got a laugh out of the title of a lecture she was giving--"Sex and Outer Space". And it was kind of fun to see how badly Larry Buchanan directed this. And I saw a new print and the colors were bright and strong. So, this is a bad movie, but I've seen worse. From what I've heard even Kirk and Craig to this day admit liking it! I'm giving it a 2.
Sometimes bad movies are just bad. Not campy. Not funny bad. Just awful. This is #1 with a bullet. This is what I call a "Fast Forward Film", meaning you can put your VCR on fast forward for extended periods, and not miss anything important. Actually there isn't anything important or interesting in this entire flick. There's about five minutes of story, so to pad things out, someone will walk into a room, and then walk around the room, then pour themselves a drink, then walk around the room again, just to kill time.If I can convince even one of you not to waste your time with this film, I can die a happy man.
