That was an excellent one.
Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
Brilliant and touching
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
What in the name of sanity did I just watch? Basically "Trilogy of Terror" is a film with a very short runtime (1 hr 12 mins) that is broken up into three separate short stories, the main character in each is played by Karen Black. As the name suggests, these short stories are horror, or meant to be horror anyway, I found nothing from any of the stories to be particularly frightening, very camp and very lame is what they are. The first story, titled "Julie" is about a high school kid asking his English teacher out, she agrees to go to the drive-in movies with him, only to be drugged and photographed, then blackmailed..., this story takes a clever turn towards the end, if another word for clever was lame. The second story is about feuding sisters (both played by Karen Black, neither sisters share a scene together to get around that one), in what felt like a poor rip off of "Whatever happened to Baby Jane?", anyhow in the end with the help of some voodoo, the one sister is able to kill the other off, yawn, boring. The final story is the most famous one, as for how it's become so famous is absolutely beyond me..., is this pathetic tribal doll meant to be scary or something? The story and the 'fear-factor' is so camp it made me cringe, the first three quarters of the story is boring and nothing happens other than 'suspense building', you only get to see the doll in action for the last couple of minutes of the film, waste of time, and anything but scary! It's an awful film, or film's, or whatever you want to call it, B-movie horror films, probably C-movie actually..., this is obviously where the Simpson's drew their inspiration for the Treehouse of Horror episodes from, only the Simpson's long running versions are far superior than this load of tripe.
I've never seen Trilogy Of Terror before & after hearing so much about it, I had to see it for myself.I guess the best thing I can say about it was Karen Black did a good job playing 4 different roles & the thing that amazed me the most was that this was a Made For TV movie.I did not know that until I read it on another website. They definitely don't make Made For TV movies like they use to & Trilogy Of Terror proves it.Other than that, I found Trilogy Of Terror to be mainly boring. The 1st story about the shy college professor & the scheming student who seduces & blackmails her was predictable & boring. The 2nd story about the 2 sisters was about the same, predictable & boring.Last but NOT least & the best of the bunch was the story of the African tribal doll.It was the best & most entertaining out of the 3.If nothing else, skip the 1st 2 & go right to the 3rd
Three stories in a Twilight Zone style, all featuring Karen Black, is a mildly amusing trilogy from 1975. Robert Matheson is the source material. Black is first Julie, a school marm college professor with hair pulled up into a bun and old fashioned eyeglasses. A student takes a liking to her and convinces the outwardly shy teacher to attend a drive in movie with him, where he drugs her and takes compromising pictures in order to force Julie into a relationship. She has a surprise ending, which is not a happy one. Black is both Millicent and Therese in the second story. Milly is a woman who presents a spinster image, and Therese is a blonde sex bomb in mini skirt. They despise each other and I figured it out very quickly. Number three is the most entertaining, as Emelia has returned home with a Zulu killer doll as a present for her boyfriend. On the phone, she tells mom that a scroll explains that the doll has an evil spirit which will be released if a gold chain is removed. Of course, the chain falls off and the little terror chases Black all over the place, with a sharp knife as a weapon. It is the best of the three and Ms. Black makes the seventy two minutes worthwhile.
Ask anyone who has seen 70s TV anthology Trilogy of Terror and they'll no doubt mention the evil Zuni Fetish Doll that goes on a bloodthirsty rampage in the last of the three stories: with his beady little eyes, rows of savage teeth and wild black hair, he certainly is an unforgettable character. Sadly, there is nothing else about Trilogy of Terror that is anywhere near as memorable. The problem lies primarily with the stories, which are surprisingly weak considering that they come from the pen of Richard Matheson, best known for classic sci-fi novel I Am Legend and his work for The Twilight Zone. Tales one and two are extremely mediocre, devoid of either chills or thrills and saddled with extremely lame 'twist' endings that neither shock nor surprise. Story number three is also has a pretty feeble narrative (one which amounts to little more than an extended chase/battle in an apartment) but at least it has that wicked little Zuni doll to liven things up a bit.Star Karen Black puts in some decent performances throughout, ably playing a total of four very different roles, and there is adequate direction from Dan Curtis, but this film simply isn't as good as some seem to recall.
