How sad is this?
Excellent adaptation.
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
***SPOILERS*** Italian slasher film that takes place in Barcelona Spain involving this hooded, with a red plastic raincoat, psycho killer who after murdering his victims pokes their baby blue left eyes out in some kind of bazaar blood ritual. A number of foreign tourists are targeted by this maniac that has the local police headed by the soon to be retired, in just three days, Inspector Tudela, Andres Mejuto, desperate to catch him. That before the story hits the front pages and decimated the city's tourist business that's it major source of income. Were given a number of clues to who the killer is but they seem so confusing that they in fact give him cover from to police instead of having him tracked down and arrested by them. One of the clues that's revealed with such shock and fan-fear is in him being seen a photo with the mulatto fashion model Naiba Campball, Ines Pellegrini. The confusing photo doesn't really show anything except to Neiba, who has brown eyes instead of blue ones the ones the killer is really after, that doesn't make any rhyme or reason at all to his identity! And leaves you, or those of us watching the movie, totally confused to who he is! ***SPOILERS*** It in fact was the plucky Neiba who's lesbian lover Lisa Sanders, Mirta Miller, was one of the killers victims who figured out who the killer was by seeing the photo that was kept from the audience. And after her tracking him down almost lost her life as well as left eye in doing it. This murder and eye popping spree was finally put to and end by the frustrated, in trying to solve the case, and soon to retire Inspector Tudela who finally got a chance to draw and fire his revolver, that he never did in his entire 30 year career in the Barcelona Police Depertment, and mercifully put an end to the killer as well as the movie.
A police inspector attempts to discover the identity of a vicious murderer ('modus-operandi': stab the victim, and then gouge out the left eyeball) who has been picking off the members of a Spanish sightseeing tour. With only seven days to go before his retirement, will he be able to solve the crime before he leaves the force for a more peaceful life of trout-fishing?A typically convoluted example of the giallo genre, directed by Umberto 'Cannibal Ferox' Lenzi, Eyeball fails to work mainly due to its forgettable bunch of characters, who spend too much time holding dull conversations, a blatantly silly concept (the sightseers continue their holiday, even as their numbers rapidly dwindle), and its series of repetitive murders (you've seen one stabbing/eye gougingyou've seen 'em all!).Lenzi tries hard to keep his audience interested, making sure to include all of the elements expected of the genre (gloved killer, red herrings-a-plenty, unbelievably silly ending) and plenty of gratuitous female nudity, but with a boring sub-plot about an adulterous affair, and a lack of inventive deaths (Argento, this ain't!), Eyeball is ultimately rather disappointing.
I know, I know, it's not the best made film in the world - but I like it! I love the jingling music, the gorgeous girls, showing us their gorgeousness, and the killings. Gory and regular are the death scenes and each followed by a train of possibilities and guilty looking folk, lurking. The Ramblas looks lovely, the girls, I have already mentioned look lovely but their costumes are fantastic, their hair ever changing and all those 70's hotel rooms, airplanes taking off and landing, matching rainwear, glimpses of Barcelona, even a trip to Sitges. What more could one wish for. Oh and the conclusion stinks but at least we didn't sit back halfway through saying that we knew who did it. Fun!
This is one awesome slasher flick that pre dates most slasher films. One of Umberto Lenzi's movies and it is a "giallo" and very enjoyable. Gore galore with mean looking brutal knife attacks!!!Gouging out eyeball's is his profession. Anyone that says this movie isn't good is not a slasher or a horror fan because this is everything us horror junkies want to see. I have this on VHS and don't think it's on DVD yet but someone like Anchor Bay or Blue Underground need to jump on this before someone else does. Just remember kiddies that this was way before Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees and this is where it all started. Slasher Reviewer says this is a must see and on his Top 20 Slasher List for sure. 5 Stars!!!!!
