Good story, Not enough for a whole film

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

What does one learn from Sahara? World history, African geography, technological evolution, how endurance races are run, desert ecology, women's rights, comparative religion, international politics, Saharan fashion, that a woman with a moustache can be cute, what panthers like to eat, what happened to John Mills, that a movie featuring Brooke Shields is worth ten movies without her. 'Too bad I saw this on broadcast TV instead of the original film or I feel I would have learned even more--from one scene of Brooke in particular (without the blurring). The one thing I found annoying was seeing Brooke finish that grueling race without any dust on her. Aw, who am I kidding? I know they did that just to make her appear prettier for me. I'll allow them to stretch the truth for that.-- So how come this flick rated so low in the votes? Yeah, you guessed it. Just because there are so many women out there envious of Brooke's looks and so many men mad 'cause they'll never get to drive a cool, vintage auto like these, let alone go out with a gal like Brooke. Hey, I know it, too, but I accept it.

Okay, so it's no Academy Award winner. The writing is poor, some of the movie is just plain silly, but there is a lot to enjoy. I love the chemistry between the Brooke & Lambert Wilson... the seductive and emotional nature of their scenes together. Lambert Wilson takes my breath away! He did in 1983 when I first saw the film (okay, I'll admit -- a few times). I just finally found a copy recently and watched it again for the first time in 23 years or so, and he STILL takes my breath away! Brooke is beautiful and he is terribly handsome -- his face, his eyes, his voice -- he looks at her as if he's going to drink her. It's incredible. Mesmerizing. In my book, this is one of the sexiest movies ever (and without actually having any sex in it).I looked up Lambert Wilson on IMDb and realized I didn't recognize him 20 years later in "Matrix Reloaded" or the newer "Sahara" (but it had been a long time -- the french accent and clean-shaven face threw me off). It looks like he's been working steadily in France all along, thank goodness. I'm thrilled to know he's been a success. I hope he'll do more American films. Oh, and the score was haunting. It added a lot to the film. And one more thing: Brooke was practically a child when she did this film. I thought her acting was fine, especially considering her age and the poor script with which she had to work.

I enjoyed this movie very much. It was set in a period where women had limitations. Dale (Shield) was raised so it seems by a father who allowed her more freedom, yet she was very naive. As love stories go, I thought it was true to form. In fact, I recently bought a copy of this film and watched it again today. I enjoyed it just as much today as I had years ago. As I was watching it I could not help thinking that I had seen Jaffar (Lambert) in some other films. The person he reminded me of was the brother and Frenchman in Timeline. Later, my daughter signed on to this site and looked Mr. Lambert up. I was right. I think he is a very good actor.

This is a fun movie with a little bit of everything: romance, adventure, treachery, war, comedy...you name it. Fate brings an American girl (Brooke Shields) named Dale to the Sahara Desert, hoping to win the famous Sahara off-road race in a custom built car that her recently deceased father designed and put together. A tribal war breaks out in the desert, wreaking havoc with her plans. She is kidnapped by Rasoul (John Rhys-Davies),a warlord for the Shombara tribe, and then claimed by the ruler of the Shombara tribe, a handsome young sheik named Jaffar (Lambert Wilson). Sparks fly between Dale and Jaffar from the moment they meet, but can they overcome all the obstacles? This film has beautiful desert scenery, the gorgeous Brooke Shields, exotically handsome Lambert Wilson, and some great character actors like John Rhys-Davies, John Mills, and Horst Buchholz. Some of the action and adventure scenes are pretty exciting, especially when Jaffar has to rescue Dale from a pit full of leopards. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie; it's great fun!
