A brilliant film that helped define a genre

This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

A sensational made for T.V cautionary tale that was base on a - so called, true diary of a teenage drug victim - with the emphasis on VICTIM. Not only was the book written by a middle aged woman who also just happened to be a devout Mormon, so that pre-marital sex is portrayed as AT LEAST as destructive as drugs, but the dialogue has a very phony and clichéd sound to it. This is not helped b the fact that all the " teenagers " are portrayed by actors in their twenties, an that the lead actress is completely vacant and one dimensional from the onset. The ending is also ridiculous. If you want to see a realistic film about teenage junkies in the late seventies ( all the kids are played by actual teenagers of the relevant age ) may I recommend Christiane F. it's gritty and still shocking after more than thirty years.

When this film first came out I watched it and it scared the crap out of me. There are a few movies in my life that had a real impact on me and this was one of them. I hadn't seen it since then but recently watched it again and thought I didn't understand really why although saying that when I hear the music that was played during it sang by Grace Slick I still get that sinking, sad, depressed feeling that it originally gave me. Is the quality great compared to today's movies? No, I can't say it is and I've seen better telling of this type of story. Is the acting the best? No, again seen better? Is the storyline based on half-truths? Yes it is. Did it do it's job to scare the crap out of me when I was a youngster. Heck yes and I think was a big influence in the fact that now at 48 years old, almost 49, I never touched a drug in my life. So it may not have been the best acting, most truthfully storyline, the best quality but I think in it's way it saved many of us from ever even thinking about starting down the path of drugs.

I was 14 when I first saw this movie. It had a tremendous impact on me. I am now a librarian and read the book for the first time this year. The most memorable scene was the bathroom scene at the home where she was babysitting. She was given/took LSD, hallucinated and locked herself in the bathroom to keep from hurting the kids. She thought she was being buried alive and tried to claw her way out of the casket/bathroom. I know this had a profound effect on the choices I made when I did begin to experiment with drugs. I remember it vividly to this day and actually wrote into an editorial commentator once to see if I could get a copy of the movie. He wrote back and said there was no such movie. I knew differently and even though the movie did not keep me from using drugs, I believe that I always had this movie at the forefront of my mind and it somehow kept me grounded!! I think every high school student should be required to see it. The time period may have changed but the issues that teens still face has not.

I was 13 when I saw this movie and today at 45 it is still my favorite movie of all time. The story was so realistic in it's approach to drugs and hanging out with the bad crowd. The choices that we make and how it can affect us. I loved the music also! I think that the networks consider bringing this back on TV. The story is still relevant today as it was back than. This is one movie that you can't get out of your mind! Parent's should also see this with their children and discuss the movie afterwords. The movie didn't seem to scream in your face about drugs, it kept you interested and involved in what was going to happen next. Please get this movie on DVD if anyone can.
