Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

In some ways, "Shootout at Lokhandwala" is typical of many Bollywood films. Even thought it's about gangsters and terrorists, these killers take time out for huge song and dance numbers! I really don't think these worked very well considering the subject matter in this film. However, in another way the movie is very unusual. It is one of the most violent Indian films I have seen--with a few particularly grisly deaths (such as seeing a close up of a woman being run over). In this sense, it certainly isn't typical! The film is based on actual real life events--so to some degree it had to be violent. After all, the thugs were horrible and violent people--there's no denying that. And, the ultimate showdown between them and the police DID result in a long standoff during which more than 1500 shots were fired! So, making it non-violent wouldn't have worked...though the film doesn't shy away from violence in the least. It's not a film to show small kids, that's for sure.As for the quality of the film, it's quite nice. The acting is fine and it was unusual to see Amitabh Bachchan playing a cop who is at times difficult to like. But the film, despite being exciting and well acted does occasionally degenerate into macho theatrics-- especially during the big finale--though I must admit that the cigarette scene and the coat rack was amazingly cool. Overall, it's a film best for folks who want a lot of action and killing. It might seem a strange film to folks outside India, as its end justifying the means angle is unusual to say the least.

If you are expecting a real life depiction of an incident that happened some 16 years ago, if you are expecting a true to life cinema, if you are expecting a film on the lines of Black Friday… then you'll be disappointed. And big time.Because this is no real life. Its hardcore commercial cinema, with all the entities of a typical Bollywood potboiler intact. So you have item numbers with no relevance with the narrative, you have cops delivering stylish dialogs on television, you have gangs of men walking in slow-mo, you have cop-gangster fight where they prefer fists over pistols, you have an amazing background score in the shootout sequences… so is that bad. No, not at all. In fact it's good, very entertaining. But not real by any yardsticks. So before entering forget that it's based on any true incident (well if you know that at the first place), watch it as a fictitious action thriller, and you'll be entertained. Direction and cinematography of the film is top notch. The story is thrilling and taut, you'll be on the edge of the seat for most of the time if not always. The action sequences, especially in the final moments of film are really good.Sanjay Dutt delivers a knock out performance yet again. Sunil Shetty makes the film all the more fictitious; I personally have never seen a cop who looks, walks, dresses or behaves like him. Arbaz Khan is decent. They should have used a better adhesive for his moustaches, its fluttering at times. Abhishek in guest appearance is good. Tusshar Kapoor tries his best to shed the "good boy next door" image, and marginally succeeds too, but it'll still take some more time. Amrita Singh is solid, well not literally, performance vise. And this film sort of marks the come back of Vivek Oberoi. You see glimpse of Company (his debut film) days. He's still not lost all of it. He can be revived, only if he selects his films wisely. All in all, an entertaining and larger than life film. Watch if for fun, not for history lessons.

Gun totting gangsters, blood oozing out of dead bodies, Mayhem, death, destruction, welcome to another cops vs. gangster saga. Loosely based on famous encounter case of 1991 at Lokhandwala complex, Andheri, Mumbai, this film could fall in the category of gripping, realistic cinema only if the sensibilities of makers were in place. But here both Producer and Director stick to their respective track record. Therefore, what one finally gets to see is a shoddy, tacky, noisy, very bollywood caricature stereo typed stuff that looks like a patch on the realistic cinema. If that is not all, you are subjected to not one, not two, but three item numbers. The glorification of gangsters, their colorful lifestyle and violence reached its peak here, thanks to the amateurish, irresponsible, insensitive unapologetic treatment of the subject. When will these film-makers learn that there is a large section of society which directly gets influenced. There is even melodrama in the subplots of all gangsters. The strange histrionics of mother of a gangster just take you by surprise. There is ample mockery at the way an ATS functions as well as responds to an inquiry conducted on them. If we leave aside the good work of stunt co-ordinators Javed-Ejaz, throughout the film through repetitive scenes we see a ritual sticking by textbook on realistic cinema viz. ever moving hand held camera, Loose frames, Grainy Picture, Sepia toned picture, Extreme Close Ups applied mechanically depicting expletives for no reason, stupid one-liners by almost all characters, Dance Bars, Over-acting…the list is endless. Are established film-makers learning any lessons from the recent successes of films like Black Friday or Bheja Fry? Am I analyzing this film or ripping it apart? I am very consciously doing the later. It rightly deserves and I don't care.

the plot was poor, very predictable. the same old over abused story of gangsters trying to overpower the don with the hybrid of fake police encounters. what is the meaning of hundreds of policemen firing aimlessly at a building? and yes, the random shots managed to kill no one. the story was unclear on whether they want to show some petty criminals struggle become the mafia, or some devoted policemen's attempt to get rid of crime and criminals. poor hybrid of the 2 distinct plots made the story pathetic. the "petty criminals" were too petty to arouse any viewer interest, cause they danced and relaxed most of the time in the bar to pose any serious threat to the existing don or to really trouble the law and order of the city. the dignified policemen were just too naive in their approach, planning and execution that they deserved to die at the shootout instead of the criminals. but as said before, the "petty criminals" were too petty!!overall, you should strongly recommend this movie to your friends, if you have wasted your time on this already. Why should they be spared of the torture :-)
