Such a frustrating disappointment
Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
This movie had a lot of things going against it, and the filmmakers turned their weaknesses into assets. The dark, grainy look of the cheap film used actually punctuates the stark, bleak story being told. it is a one-location shoot, almost entirely taking place inside a broken down mobile home property. But the real hidden gem in this movie is Kate Vernon, the female lead, who gives us a disturbing, unflinching look into an unhappy, unstable, and abused woman's final descent into madness. What can be worse than to slowly coming to realization you are becoming unhinged? Many people will be turned off because of a lack of slick, expensive production values. But look deeper at the STORY BEING TOLD, and you'll realize this is a good movie made by people with talent and potential.
Mike and Christine are a real pair of hicks. They live in the back of beyond and to say their life is not full of joy is something of an understatement. Mike likes to use his fists wherever possible, has a fondness for his beer that he should reserve for his wife and all the charm and grace of an oven ready turkey. This thankfully short feature lets us delve into a particularly brutal portion of their lives together. The acting is at best, amateurish, and at worst, laughable. Despite it's length, the feature still somehow managed to drag in several places and it's only redeeming features appears to be the bludgeoning of some of it's cast.
