Flying Phantom Ship

Hayato's home city is under attack from a gigantic robot. His parents are lying dead in the rubble and the only remaining friend is his dog. His only thought now is revenge against the owner of the Phantom Ship (from where the robot said he was sent). He ends up in the house of Kuroshio, the leader of the fight against the Phantom Ship and the most important person in the city. By complete accident, Hayato finds his way to an underground passageway where he realises that the true nature of events does not mesh with what Kuroshio has told him. His life is now in great danger, and only he can stop the plans of the evildoers.

There are women in the film, but none has anything you could call a personality.

The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

As one previous reviewer said, this was one of the very first animes that were shown on a big screen in the Soviet Union. The other one was "Barefoot Gen". I think they showed those movies in ~1985, but not sure. There were so few foreign movies shown (that was before video was available to the soviet people), that any movie that passed through the draconian film commission would automatically become extremely popular in the USSR.The message behind this movie was not as "anti-imperialism" (read anti-American in soviet terminology), "anti-war", "anti-capitalism" (and it also does not deal with the nuclear war, thanks god) as the Barefoot Gen, but it still left a lasting impression on me and countless other kids. As kids, we did not get the subtle satire of the advertising parody, big corporations, and so on, but as almost all of the anime, it has something really scary and illogical at the core, which would scare any kid.I have recently re-watched the movie after finding it in a supermarket bargain basement and although it's probably 10-15 minutes too long and some gags are way off (the annoying dog, a rip-off from scooby doo is particularly hard to bear) there are topics you would rarely find in a Hollywood movie - city being destroyed, people getting killed by sea monsters, corporations taking over the world, arms race, and so on.This animation was filmed in 1969, with the horrors of war still fresh in the memory of the Japanese, and although the animation might not be up to standard of state-of-the-art animes like Mononoke, etc. it is still an enjoyable film.More so for people who watched it as the kids during the time of Soviet propaganda.

It is one of those anime samples (together with "Barefoot Gen"), which were shown in our country during the Soviet era. It went under the title "Ghost Ship". It does not evoke any memories inside me because I did not watch this anime then. So, my comment is free from that overwhelming factor.Negative points will go first.Bad design of "Golem", damn it. The design of this evil robot is awful - this is my main complain. It should have been impressive instead of being a piece of flying round-shaped metal-looking dumb thing with rockets. Minus two points because of that poor-looking "Golem" (it's one of the main mechanical villains after all).Still, this major drawback does not spoil the shiny entertainment. It's not animation but the message that matters here. Or rather, messages.Time for good ones. This anime has got messages, which stretch much further than usual animated kid stuff:1. The arms race of the government presented in this anime is not so far from the truth. There are talks and myths about the aggressors to back up billions of green bucks spent on all manner of U-boats, jets, aircraft carriers, tanks, and other junk. Good job, animators.2. "BOA" aggressor is a good metaphor. The devilish star serves as the entrance to the dark underwater empire of evil that tries to rule the world with candy and whip. Very keen insight, animators.3. "Boa Juice" commercials are funny and resemble the situation with the ads on out TV nowadays where the serious programs are being interrupted by some stupid "bubble" nonsense. "How can they interrupt THIS and air a commercial?!?!" sounds very true-to-life.In addition to all these thought-provoking messages (which put this anime on a very high level - sorry, but there's great doubt in me that in this field even the best Pixar/Disney cartoons of the top 250 can be respectable rivals) there are:a great music score that varies from light childish melodies to the tragic orchestra themes; - a very unpredictable main hero: a boy who is good, cool, and reserved in some situations (helps people during catastrophes, ready to fight evil anytime and even to sacrifice his own life) and bad, nervous and wicked in the others (from time to time has some fits of uncontrollable anger - remember him throwing a loaf into the dog's mug?); - an interesting background story about the "ghost ship"; - a bunch of minor jokes that make this anime enjoyable for children too (the dog's mishaps, the hero's grimaces and his funny way of thinking and yelling, etc.).8 out of 10 - for being clever and satirical alone it deserves a high mark (for instance, remove all the "classy" computer technology from most modern animation "masterpieces", and what would you get?). Thank you for attention.

The film is a mishmash of many ideas that delivers, mostly At one point it is a "Megagodzilla vs. The Flying Dutchman", the next minute we're in a middle of government conspiracy, (coca)cola-drink addictions, a lame Scooby Doo lookalike dog clowning around and so on.I sought this film purely because of Miyazaki, but I cannot say whether his contributions are visible. The animation is weak by today's standards but it easily compares to any Saturday morning cartoon of today. And speaking of the Scooby Doo one has to wonder whether this film rips off the animation series from the same year or is it vice versa...? The orchestral score is also rather good if a bit overwhelming at times. The plot isn't very hard to follow even though it jumps all over the place from ghost stories to huge scifi battles. I especially enjoyed the purposefully idiotic "Boa-juice" advertisements, a drink that is served in a bottle that resembles the Coca-Cola bottle, but causes a severe addiction and isn't very healthy. Funny stuff, probably an intentional jab to the soft drink industry. Also of note was the military-industrial complex conspiracy where arms manufacturers stop at nothing to create a need for their weapons. Parallels to modern day conspiracy theories aren't hard to find. All in all this is a 1-hour action packed adventure feature that after the first few minutes keeps a fast pace to the end. Good luck hunting this obscurity!

Kid, who lost his parents stand against evil man, who want to rule the world and- probably is responsible for death of his father. Catching moments, a bit scare- perfect for midle age kids (I had 7 when saw it first)! :)I guess it`s one of the first far-east animation movie, created to be understandable for other cultures.
