Save your money for something good and enjoyable
A brilliant film that helped define a genre
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Almost 100 years since it was made (93 more exactly), and this film is still full of freshness. There are many comic situations to be seen in it. Also very poetic, it's Harold Lloyd! Full of spectacular and very dangerous scenes. The actors are simply charming, the film moves in great shape. Perhaps the author of the script for "The Graduate", with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, was inspired by this film, the story is somehow similar.
Kindhearted but nervous around women, a tailor shop apprentice goes to extraordinary lengths to secure the affections of a young lady he helped on a train in this Harold Lloyd silent comedy. Often regarded as one of Lloyd's best films, 'Girl Shy' benefits from frequently letting its star emote in close-up with Lloyd delivering one of his most down-to-earth and touching performances. The film is also capped off by a magnificently choreographed elongated chase sequence, the ingenuity of which puts 'The Graduate' to shame as Lloyd similarly tries to stop a wedding. 'Girl Shy' is an uneven ride though, even with these pluses. A prominent subplot has Lloyd (ironically) writing a manual on how to talk to women and trying to get it published, and while there is a lot of humour to be had in this subplot, it feels like part of a completely different movie, not gelling well with his romance with the train passenger. The gags are also a little hit-and-miss. That said, the ones that work are exquisite. Highlights include Lloyd eating mousetrap cheese to cover up for accidentally sticking his hand in one, Lloyd hiding the woman's dog on the train (and pretending to yelp like the dog) and Lloyd floating away on a turtle without realising it at a later point. The aforementioned concluding chase sequence is very impressive too and provides a charming note for the film to end on.
I had never seen a Harold Lloyd film before this, but definitely plan to see more of them after watching Girl Shy! He portrays a Dorky, socially awkward character that you'll instantly gel with on a few different levels. The actress who plays "The Rich girl," in this film- Jobyna Ralston is charming and someone I would have loved to meet if I'd been born a few decades earlier. Another notable Character would include Harold's uncle. He is portrayed as as sweet, older man who has pretty much accepted that his Nephew is a strange one; but doesn't push him to change. There are also some very sweet moments shared between the two leads that remind me of two kids falling in love. If you're a fan of Romantic Comedies you will absolutely love this!
Harold Lloyd ranks as one of the three greatest silent comedians next to Chaplin and Keaton. He combines great comic timing with crisp editing and physical daring-do that wows audiences. Girl Shy, written by Lloyd and the first film he produced, tells the story of a sweet-natured, stuttering bonehead who can not approach the girls. The irony is he has been secretly readying a book on how to be romantic with girls while working his day job as a tailor's assistant, back when a guy could still be a tailor's assistant. He takes a shine to Jobyna Ralston, his co-star in his best films, but then he's embarrassed by his publisher making fun of his book. The publisher decides to publish it as a joke to make the public laugh, and then Harold must spring into action quickly to save Jobyna from marrying a caddish two-timer. Did someone put a gun to her head though? Never mind, it's all in good fun and a set-up to the magnificent thrill comedy Lloyd was known for at the time. He employs just about every item of transportation known at the time to arrive to break up the wedding on time. It's all the more thrilling when you realize these are actual hands-on stunts Lloyd performs without a stuntman. Some of them are obviously quite dangerous upon viewing them. The large estate appearing near the end was Lloyd's own property. It's a terrific piece of good old-fashioned entertainment. *** of 4 stars.
