Admirable film.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
I caught this as an after-school TV movie back in the early 1960s. I was captivated by the idea of these lifeless yet dynamic "invaders". Even today the special effects are still not at all bad and the concept of a rock being mindlessly malevolent is still intriguing. The hunky Grant Williams and stunning Lola Albright make a wonderful protagonist couple that still make me want to root for them even today. The older scientist and newspaper owner add some wisdom and innovation to the exigent problems to be addressed and there is some honest-to-gosh tension that is hard to find in some of these B-grade movies.I waited decades before this became available on VHS and was more than happy to shell out the money for it and have subsequently obtained the DVD as well. I get this out at least once a year on a slow Saturday afternoon and relive the kids matinée session of an era long past.Forget about the science, this is just a great time.
John Sherwood directed this surprisingly good science fiction story set in the Southwestern desert community of San Angelo, where a meteor shower of rocks turn some people to stone upon contact, but even worse, when they come into contact with water, start to grow into the title menace, which threaten to destroy the town, then engulf the world. Grant Williams and Lola Albright play the romantic leads. Well-directed and imaginative, with a most original and unusual threat working quite well here. The monolith rocks are both imposing and striking, and the model work used to bring them to "life" is excellent. A little-known thriller awaiting rediscovery.
Of course, I wasn't born yet for first run viewing, but I watched it one day my mother was busy and I was tension filled and afraid. When the monoliths were approaching what I call the "last redoubt", growing, crashing, ever moving towards them - I was like "HURRY!" they're "COMING"! Whatever "They" were. They seemed to have an alien motivation and in some manner needed to touch humans not only for moisture - but for "Human Moisture". Seems it was better for "them" in some way.I haven't seen it since and wish they would play it again. I think even now - so many years later - it would still put a good fear in me. "RUN"!
This is really quite well done. The musical score is excellent as are the sound effects. The acting is quite decent throughout and the premise makes good sense. There are no monsters in the classical sense but there are monstrous things going on. The plot twists are ingenious and keep the audience guessing and the film itself doesn't outstay its welcome. I saw this as a kid and enjoyed it. As an adult there is still very much to like. I think it stands on its own merits quite well without being tethered to another film. The special effects are wonderful, by the way.Curtis Stotlar
