hyped garbage
Excellent but underrated film
As Good As It Gets
Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
This film is a mock buster that has nothing to do with another film recently released that has "Pompeii" in its title. Asylum did something similar with the "Three Musketeers" a few years back, making a movie with a similar name, but in a different time period. This film follows the same identical plot as all of Asylum disaster films. Family separates. Disaster strikes. Super Dad (Adrian Paul) rescues family. In this film the teen daughter (Georgina Beedle) turns into Bill Nye the science guy to save everyone from a volcano. The acting was Asylum grade. The film answers the question: If 100 monkeys were placed at 100 type writers, could they eventually come up with an Asylum script? The film is overly CG. The early question I have was why did the opening scene contain a view of Rio and then have volcanoes go off somewhere else? The cross at Rio is the most recognized landmark in the world. Then we have John Rhys-Davies as Colonel Dillard, except he is now Carlos Dillard as opposed to Colonel Ralph Dillard from "100 Degrees Below Zero" when Europe was destroyed. Who would notice? cheese film. Not as cheesy as "100 Degrees Below Zero" but it tries.Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.
The hero of the story, played by Adrian Paul, steals a helicopter to try and rescue his wife and daughter from an eruption of the famous volcano Vesuvius. They were visiting Pompeii and happen to be volcano experts, so they always know what's coming next: the heatwave, the toxic gas... But they have to hide in the cellar of a museum to wait for a team of mercenaries, who were coincidentally on stand-by when dad needed them. The helicopter crashes, and then they have to look for another way out...The movie was mainly shot in Bulgaria, with a few location shots from Naples added. Many scenes of the movie take place in cellars where people find shelter, and that is quite clever because it gives the audience some time to get to know the characters, and the makers of the movie didn't have to rely too much on special effects which could only be poor in a low budget flick, anyway. Still the movie left me slightly disappointed due to the very simple story. The location of Pompeii begs for historical references, and also one or two surprising turns would have been nice.
First of all, more thought into the research of Pompeii was needed and any person who has visited Pompeii and know what it looks like can understand that the film gave us some false images. (Now, I am not sure if the movie was filmed in Bulgaria or Canada. Maybe both)Secondly, the special effects were so unrealistic which at times made me sit back and laugh when something quite dramatic was happening. I understand the when it comes to low budget movies, one will never get realistic effects, but these effects were terrible. You can't just look past them! Finally, as much as I like Adrian Paul who trained to build his body up for this movie, what on earth was he doing taking on this role? Are Hollywood actors really finding it hard getting work? Well, in summary the whole movie was a disaster and even Mr Pierce seemed fake in the film. Georgina Beedle was the best out of the lot though at times you could tell the lines were rehearsed. The rest of the actors either need more acting classes or the director just couldn't lead them into a proper role.Yes, everyone is a critic but unfortunately I was embarrassed watching this film and having studied Pompeii as an Anthropologist, I just shook my head in disappointment.
This "movie", Ladies and Gentlemen, is the reason IMDb should have a "Zero" rating. We, The Good People of the World, must be able to exercise our Roger Ebert given right to vote "Zero Stars" for a load of crap like Apocalypse Pompeii.Writing that is worse than, well anything I can think of - Worse acting than a Wayan brothers movie - Worse directing than Michael Bay (Where are you Alan Smithee?) - Laughable special effects - Etc - Etc - EtcThis is a movie so bad that you should not even download it from (insert your favorite torrent site here)
