"Die Deutschmeister" or "A March for the Emperor" is an Austrian German-language film from 1955, so this one had its 60th anniversary last year. It was directed and written by Ernst Marischka and stars Romy Schneider and these two are mostly known for their collaborations on the famous Sissi films. This one here, however, has Schneider play another character. But the topics are similar, especially the romance aspects. In contrast to Sissi, there is also considerable music in here. However, the writing was just so-so. At easily over 90 minutes, it dragged a lot during its runtime and Schneider's acting also wasn't good enough to make up for the flaws in the script. I personally did now know what "Deutschmeister" were before watching this film and I cared even less after watching the movie. Schneider is of course breathtakingly stunning as usual in her young years, but this cannot make up for everything else that is wrong or boring about this film. It is a bit more pompous than most other German(-language) films from the 1950s, but in terms of plot and story, it does not bring anything else. It just wasn't as very good decade for film in Germany. This film tries to make a difference, but ends up very forgettable. Not recommended.

The man who plays the drummer march music composer Wilhelm August was Siegfried Breuer Jr. He was the son of the famous actor Siegfried Breuer. His son was 25 years old when he did this picture while Romy was only 17, While he plays a teenager too. Fortunatly he did live longer than Romy but died at the age of 70. Romy Mama Magna Schnieder is in the picture too guiding her daughter as her Aunt. Joseph Mienrad plays a government official who goes to the bakery to get some goods for the royalty ,also her boy friend.Well Romy is going to her aunts in Vienna to work for her in the bakery.She stops at place where they are having a dance.She notices that one of the higher ups lost their hankers-chief. She picks it up and takes it in to give it to the owner , The Countess. But cant find her , she's mistaken as one of the dancers so is pressured to join the troop for an Hungarian rhapsody dance. When that's over ,she see the Countess and her friends leave she tries to stop them but she misses them.She ends up watching the show in the balcony. The baron , played by Gunther Philips, Sees her in the balcony and notices the hanker-chief. He thinks that she's the Comtess. He eventually asks her for a dance and give her wine. Thinking she a real Comte's she takes her home but doesn't know it's a bakery.She goes to her aunts place and her aunt wonder why's she late. Later the baron goes to the place where she dropped Romy but when he visits the countess , he thinks that Romy is there. Then he discover as she introduces her daughter that she isn't Romy, played by Susi Nicolleti.Well the marching military parade goes through and Romy and her coworker a boy, is watching it. She notices that the drummer is flirting with her.She likes it. Later Magna's boyfriend ,played by Joseph Meinrad, shows up to pick up the bakery good for the royalty.She introduces her niece. Later a women from the beer garden, who sings,played by Gretl Schorg, comes in and tell Romy that the soldier who winks at her wants to see her.He meets her and they talk as he buys bakery goods from her. The Baron is getting his hair styled and trimmed by Hans Moser and his kid assistants. Joseph comes in for a styling of his beard. One of the assistance makes a mistake and curls Philip's Pompadour the wrong way withe curling iron.Hans notice it and accidentally burns Joseph's bears half way forcing him to trim it.The baron top hair is now sticking out and there's no way to straightening it out.Later on Joseph showed up for a date with Magna embarrassed by the fact he lost his beard.Earlier the singer shows up to Romy again at the bakery and tells her that the drummer want to date her.Well Magna does not know about this and thinks she her niece is going to watch the bakery.Well when Joseph and Magna shows up at Shultzes beer garden, ha ha ha ,thats when they notice that Romy and Siegfried is there too. she tries to go up to her niece and stop it but Joseph stop her.Letting her know that her niece has to have her own life.Then the drummer comes up with a musical idea and goes to the and goes up to the orchestra where they are resting.He write new lyrics for his march. The band tries it. Its a hit. But one of the higher ups shows up and tell them to stop playing cause it goes against regulations.Magna and Joseph leaves. Romy sneaks back and Magna catches her but acts cool about it. She gets her to make the royal croissants for the royalty breakfast. She puts a note , a love note, thinking that her boyfriend would get it. Well It turns up at the breakfast where the royalty and the assistances are eating with the kaiser , played by Paul Horbinger and Wolfgang Luckschy as kaiser the son. wolf brakes the Croissant. reads the latter and is surprised. He goes back to the bakery and ask what went wrong . Magna don't know what to do. Then Romy confesses she put that there thinking that the drummer would get it.She then goes to the palace to explain to the kaiser about this with Joseph. Sieg sees her with Joseph and get's jealous.After she explains to the kaiser , who understand it and see's it as a joke.She visits her boyfriend in the military and he's mad at her but not knowing what it all about.later during the big royal parade day shes getting ready to go back home and her aunt wonders why but she doesn't tell her. He encourages her to stay so she her aunt and aunts boyfriend go to the parade. As they watch the parade,one of the soldiers goes up to them and ask to see Romy . Romy Immeidiatly quickly goes to the band and grabs Wilhelm and goes to the Kaiser and son to show him. They end up being in the parade .

....This was released in France (title: "Mam'zelle Cricri" )after Sissi had become one of the biggest blockbusters in the fifties Europa.But it was probably a blueprint : Three of the actors are already here (Romy Schneider and her mother;Josef Meinrad who would provide the trilogy with its comic relief)and even Francis-Joseph,but an old one(79),and the heroine has a scene with him ,which is almost surrealistic,when you know what comes next.I saw this when I was a child ,and I must admit that,unlike Sissi which retains a certain freshness, a certain magic ,"die Deutschmeister" seems straight from the ark today;there are several subplots,none of which is really interesting.If the emperor is 79,it means that the story takes place in 1909 five years before WW1.Who could have predicted that pretty soon these nice majesties (Francis-Josef and Wilhem from Germany),along with their Russian,French and English counterparts would plunge their youth into slaughter? There are many songs (it's actually a musical) and even a military march written by Romy's squeeze.And Mrs Schneider senior's bakery displays mouth-watering Viennese pastries.

I give this film 10 out of 10, and no mistake.Anyone who doesn't realise this is the ne plus ultra of Heimat films -- with the exception of the Sissi trilogy, another Ernst Marischka Agfacolor bonbon -- doesn't know a thing about cinema, and less about Viennese Burgtheater history."Die Deutschmeister" showcases the most talented actors who ever pried a laugh from the hyper-critical Viennese (certainly the most discerning judges of acting talent in all of Europe), a mouthwatering Who's Who of Austrian theatre and film: Susi Nicoletti, Gunther Philipp, Adrienne Gessner, Hans Moser, Josef Meinrad, Paul Hörbiger not to mention Romy Schneider's film debut alongside mama Magda.This film has not made it to the English-speaking world, and more's the pity -- certainly those in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, South America are not so deprived. It's to the great credit of the translators involved that the pace and hilarity are not compromised in the least, the Portuguese and Castillian-Spanish versions as special standouts. The Viennese accent and slang does not lend itself to translation, partly because of the inherently comedic nature of the accent with it's broad A's and slurred rat-tat-tat speech, but perhaps that's more a credit of the comedic richness of the film, which allows itself to be replicated with a sparkling levity in whatever language.For those who wish a film capsule, here you are:Stanzi Hübner, the insouciant be-dirndled Salzburger maiden who believes in fortunes foretold by parrots, comes to the "Kaiserstadt", Vienna, to work for her auntie Therese. She in turn is the Official Croissant Baker of that aged Biedermeier legend, the Emperor Franz Josef: a job of importance in this croissant-conscious capital. Now there's a mouthful.In one of the twists of fate so adored and duplicated a million-fold by Austrian storytellers, she is confused by a Tourette's Syndromed nobleman as a Countess in a Fasching dance, and he later enters into matrimony sight unseen with a real Countess, who merely had the infinite good fortune of living in the general neighbourhood of Stanzi's aunt.Stanzi then meets a young would-be composer soldier in Die Deutschmeister regiment, and whilst her own romance is flourishing, she engineers her aunt's flirtation with a courtier whose sole duty seems to be "Official Picker-Upper of the Daily Imperial Croissant". No doubt his title is more grandiose on paper.For those who wish a highlighted critique, here it is:Watch the light interplay between Susi Nicoletti, Adrienne Gessner, and Gunther Philipp and then tell us this film isn't worthy of Tracy and Hepburn at their peak. Only when you've acted together more times than they have, do you mistake absolute mastery of their craft for anything less than what it is.If you want a frisky gambol in the best tradition of Viennese light comedy, this my friends, is your film.
