Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

This one was interesting until the company apparently ran out of money and had to rush the ending. You knew something was wrong when the protagonist's para-normal friend couldn't make it on the fatal night. Then his shrink tells him he was locked in a closet on the day of his mother's "accident." This revelation, we are told, emerged because the protagonist was in a 'crisis stage.' Then he says I'm going to a hotel, but first I'm going back to get my things. The shrink says, good idea! Come on -- the writers are getting desperate. Then the para-normal friend's black car is parked outside. But it isn't! That defies credulity and consistency. And so -- the ending. The finale, which has been discussed, is clearly a final wish-fulfillment, the long-held wish from the five year old for the idyllic picnic he was denied so many years before. Other problems -- the doll. Why? Why not the roller-skate (or whatever it was) that propelled Mama down those stairs? And -- what was the protagonist's mental state? Did he finally/gradually go crazy? His development was not well charted. But, basically, the rushed ending defeated a promising film.

A lawyer's aunt dies and he inherits her house, which she believed to be haunted. He decides to stay there while separated from his wife, and why shouldn't he? After all, he's a die-hard skeptic. This is a very low-key haunted house tale. I'd say it works more as a mystery than outright horror, though it's all fairly straightforward. While the old house is an atmospheric setting, the film is devoid of any chilling moments. Well, I take that back. There is one good scare, but it turns out to be a false one, no threat. The atmosphere of the house is there, it's just that the filmmakers fail to utilize it to any sizable extent. I also felt that the ending was too abrupt. I don't mind abrupt endings, but this one really pushed it.Tim Daly is okay as the "unemotional" lead. Not really a likable sort, I'd say. Tom Arnold is here too, but his part is basically a nothing role. It's Zoe Saldana who steals the show as a high-strung, yet appealing psychic. She could go on to greater things, and no, I absolutely do not consider Avatar a greater thing. The Skeptic isn't bad, but it's nothing too memorable. I do admire it for attempting a quiet, more intimate ghost story in this day of obnoxious, in your face haunting flicks.

Hmmm... that should get a lot of "not helpful" votes, as all "-est of all time" comments are bound to get.Okay, too, that you say this isn't a horror film. I accept that. As far as makeup, effects, and gore go, this is on the extremely tame end of the horror spectrum, if it can even be said to fit the genre. Nevertheless, it is very scary. What do you call a really scary movie that doesn't scare you using any methods that fit the definition of "horrific", like blood etc? You got me.The true test of movie scariness, as far as I'm concerned, is how often during the viewing you feel compelled to look behind you, you know, to make sure nothing's there creeping up on you. That's it. Jumping out of your skin is of course another time-tested gauge of scariness, but movie makers now have a formula for making the audience do that whenever they want, so it's really lost most of its cache.Whatever you want to call it, this movie scared the bejesus out of me. This is a high-quality film with great acting, writing, directing, etc. The ending was also great. This movie scares you using story, subtlety, and a steady buildup that's just delicious every step of the way. Without spoiling anything, I'd just like to say that my favorite scene is when they find the doll. Tim Daly's reaction is Oscar-worthy. It's a shame this movie didn't get a proper wide release. The only thing that bothered me was that it sounded like Tom Arnold had a cold for most of his scenes. After searching the internet I've concluded that I'm the only one who noticed this.

Sometimes movies just don't get a lot of attention because of their names, like this one, The Skeptic, which is an interesting name for a romantic comedy but not for a haunted house story. Too bad the big movie house monopolies don't play indie films. We have to find these things on DVDs or sneak a look at them online. It was cool seeing Tom Arnold playing a dramatic role but I gotta tell ya, he seemed a bit out of breath and I don't think it was intentional. I hope he is okay, health-wise.I give it a six because its merits outweigh its flaws, but ultimately The Skeptic is a confused story of a guy who leaves his wife to live in the house of his recently deceased Aunt. Of course the house is haunted. Unfortunately the loose ends of this psychological and supernatural story never get tied up and a few things happen that seem to be downright absurd. For example, why would this guy who has apparently inherited this big mansion filled with priceless treasures leave the front door unlocked? Come on. And what happened to the dispute over who the house was left to in the will? One moment we learn that the house was actually left to some scientist who is researching the paranormal, and then we never hear about that again and the house simply continues to be in the possession of the main character who drinks the wine in the wine cellar and who kicks over tables and pretty much goes nuts in there. And there are other annoying flaws in the story as well. But all in all this is a fairly decent ghost story with two big scares that will make you jump out of your chair. It is really reminiscent of those old black and white haunted house movies during which you don't know if the house is really haunted or if someone is just playing mind games for some evil purpose. Oh, but then, abruptly, there comes the ending, which is unfortunately a huge anti-climax. Please don't throw whatever is in your hand at the screen when this movie ends; it's not worth the damage.
