Terrible acting, screenplay and direction.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
The Incident is a must-see for every film buff. The story and the setting are very simple. The black and white photography looks really good and emphasises the gritty nature of night-time New York streets and the film itself. The performances are fantastic. You will see many familiar faces making their debut here. The main reason this film will never age is the fact that if you would put the exact same scenario in present times, things would not have played out much differently. The two thugs terrorising passangers on a subway train with everyone afraid to stand up and quickly put an end to the ordeal. Everyone for themselves. If it does not happen to me, I will be fine, I do not want to be involved and get myself into trouble. Sure some people speak up but their efforts are fast suppressed by the aggressors - too fast. It is a kind of social experiment in a way. How long does it take for people to reach their boiling point. The only reason that I have rated this 9/10 instead of 10/10 is that the set-up is quite long. It takes about 50 minutes before the subway train nightmare begins. But at least we get to know the thorough background of the characters. After that, The Incident kicks into top gear and the thrill ride with great suspense, acting and dialogue begins. Highly recommended.
What a disaster of a movie! This film with a current rating of 7.8 is a total failure and a farce, even for 1967. Are we to believe that two drunk punks can terrorize a carriage of people and nobody raises a finger to stop this nonsense at outset in unison? What made it worse is that the acting is so poor and put on that I forced myself to watch the whole show in disgust. How this trash can be liked is beyond my understanding. This film has nothing in its favor and should be treated as one of the worst movies ever made. I am flabbergasted!
Considering the story telling approach of movies in the 60's (in my opinion, often borderline campy), this movie does not fail on its ability to deliver an escalating powerful story, superbly acted, and in large timeless. My favorite aspect however is the delivery of the understory and how's tragically/traumatically catalyzed via the auspices of two hoodlums. Tony Musante delivers an Oscar level performance, with no lessor performances by Martin Sheen in his debut role (I believe it may have been Tony's also) and superb performances from all supporting actors performing beyond believability to a point where their characters are tragically relate-able. Ranks up there as one of my all time favorites.
In answer to the negative views , I must point out that this movie was very believable. Most people are overwhelmed by even the ILLUSION of bulliness. There was an attempted escape or 2 . Oh by the way , have you heard of the KITTY GENOVESE CASE. This movie was way ahead of its time . I loved the fact they gave each character a platform explaining the psychology, sociology and overall dynamics leading up to their 'fate' on that train. Genius indeed. Great acting, suspense and in some ways very HITCHCOCKIAN. The cast blew me away and if you want to see Martin Sheens partner in crime ... Tony Musante, you can see him in WE OWN THE NIGHT. He actually plays a good guy in that movie albeit a few pounds heavier lol. He was such a wonderful 'bad' guy in this movie. Treat yourself and watch this gem . I do not like remakes but this one would be an exception
