Too much of everything
One of my all time favorites.
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
Diana (Dina Meyer) is testing a brain-scan device to reveal what's going on in the head of the psychopathic killer Jesse (Pavan Grover). She suspects him to be responsible for a murder that Cesar (Marco Rodriguez) was executed for. The prison director, played in a not much less psychopathic way by Dennis Hopper, doesn't really care as long as there's another execution soon. What begins as a dark psychological thriller turns into an aimless flight through horror (the return of the undead), mystery (has the killer supernatural powers?), sci-fi (the brain scanning), dreams, courtroom drama and more. Personally, I have the impression that the makers of the film couldn't agree on the direction they were heading towards, so they ended up with a little bit of everything, pieces of a puzzle which do not fit. It's a pity for the good actors and a couple of exciting moments.
The scientist Diana Purlow (Dina Meyer) is performing experiments with the mind of criminals sentenced to death in the prison of the sadistic warden Earl Blakely (Dennis Hopper). She tests an apparatus she developed and capable of read minds in a man that claims to be innocent of a murder, but she is not able to convince her former lover and Governor (Jeff Fahey) to call off the execution. When the serial killer Jesse Mowatt (Pavan Grover) is arrested and sentenced to death, she convinces the warden to submit Jesse to her experiment. While working with the murderer, Diana faces pure evil in its essence."Unspeakable" is an intriguing story with gore and supernatural elements that unfortunately has a terrible conclusion. In the last five minutes, it is disclosed the character "Alicia", without any previous reference along the story, and I honestly did not understand why Jesse wanted Diana to kill him. For me, this conclusion is absolutely senseless. Further, there is a complete lack of explanation why Jesse had such abilities. Pavan Grover in the role of a diabolic serial killer pays homage to Harry Powell, the serial killer performed by Robert Mitchum in 1955 "The Night of the Hunter", with the words "Love" and "Hate" tattooed in his fingers. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "O Poder da Mente" ("The Power of the Mind")
I thought the story was excellent, I liked the movie a lot. Pavan's story was amazing... it's truly "unspeakable"! Although some might not have liked the movie, but thats up to the director.. if he (thomas wright) hadn't edited so much of Pavan's work then it would have been a smashing hit in the box-office. I'm really excited of Pavan's work. He's displayed a lot of anger and darkness towards his own character that he wrote and played, that's what makes his work more interesting. I love writing too, I think it's a form of escape... from the world ... your own world... his story really appealed to me. A story like his was always in my mind ... amazing. I'd really love to meet him one day... one day ... Keep up the great work!! -taryn
I watched this one yesterday, i didn't want to at first because of the bad comments here, but i am glad i did anyway... The story is pretty interesting, and although there are things missing in the movie, it still kept me interested... I think with a little more effort from the makers of it, this could have been a very nice movie. No bad word on the acting though, and give Dennis Hopper a break, he's not overacting, he's just playing a crazy and twisted warden... I really liked this movie, so did my girlfriend, but we both have the feeling that the movie is not complete, and the story had lots more of potential, i hope someone ever picks up this story again and does a remake of this movie... it's worth the effort!
