Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

I never thought I would see a good old horror flick in India which would spook and tickle me. Well 13B does exactly that and much more. With a tongue in cheek concept like the Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" which was based on the isolated nature of the modern society, this is a take on the "soap opera" obsessed Indian diaspora especially the women who practically live in these manipulative stories which last for ages and manage to bitch and gossip about them.In today's world, the major source of relief, information and entertainment is the TV. So much so, that it has moved up from its modest position of being just another 'household appliance' to actually determining the power equation in a family. It is easy to identify the hierarchy in the family depending on who controls the remote control. So what happens when the TV realizes this power and begins to take control? What happens when instead of showing you the facts, the TV, begins to show you what it wants you to see? What happens when Manohar, to his great horror, realizes that this is exactly what is happening with his wonderful family, who has just moved into their sweet new home at 13B.The plot unfolds as the main protagonist (Madhavan) begins to learn the "secrets" of the house and dwells into areas you cannot foresee. It is a breadth of fresh air in Indian Cinema where in general you can preempt whole movie down after one or two scenes. Not this one, you are left completely at the mercy of the makers. The performances in general are efficient and honest making the plot more believable especially by Madhavan. The key to the brilliance of the movie is that the director Vikram Kumar only takes it seriously enough without going overboard. It is intended to be a fun ride for the audience, yet not disconnecting them from the subject and the possibility of the story. It is a tough balance. The movie retains its satirical tone in the first half but then gradually changes colors. There are flaws in the film which prevent it from achieving the supreme quality and scope that the script carries. One, the camera at times is unnecessarily shaky. Most Indian filmmakers have the obsession with the tacky and overly slick camera-work and over emphasis on background score but it really hurts the storytelling, especially in a movie like this where the impact moments get somewhat diluted. Second, the climax could have had a better resolution. It was good, no doubt but the build up was so impressive that anything less than brilliant would fall short. Thirdly, some of the performances were too loud to my liking. All in all, it was sheer pleasure watching a movie like this in India which did not spoon feed the audience, which worked on different levels and which was a rollicking fun ride. I am not surprised at the news that the film will be adapted in Hollywood. It is a universal subject and I am sure it will be executed with greater finesse.

I have no idea what movie the rest of these reviewers saw, but it wasn't this one. We watched it because it was a NefFlix recommendation, probably because we've watched a number of foreign horror films. So, where do I start with this one? All of the dialogue sounds looped. It got so bad we actually were thinking about watching the dubbed version (and I usually HATE dubbed versions!) since we were going to hear looped dialogue anyway. Only there isn't a dubbed version... Stupid characters abound... Coincidences also abound... There is one exposition-heavy scene that actually has a character saying "I'm so confused" -- you and me both, bub... There are TWO musical numbers for no apparent reason... Oh, yeah, and at the end, NOTHING makes any sense. Now, I will say there is a movie in here somewhere. This just isn't it.

The only reason I don't give this movie a 10 is the slower pacing of its first half. Overall, the main cast does a really convincing job, the story is really smart, the camera work and especially the soundtrack are really creepy. This movie is a better psycho-thriller than most of the Hollywood productions heavily promoted and released this decade, many of them relying on bad taste violence, blood and gore. It's the story that makes this movie and the natural performances of the likable characters which make many moments more credible than you'd expect. You actually care about what's going to happen to them in the end. To put it short, it's been a while since I've felt so tense during a movie. While the first half could have been cut shorter by 20 minutes or so, it still keeps you guessing and biting your nails in anticipation of terror. The second half really delivers many creepy moments and scares, especially some really smart twists which will glue you to the couch. Some people complained about the two songs featured in the movie being pointless. I can tell you they were not. The first song stands for a love scene, replacing nudity with some playful moments between the main characters, it's a different, subtle and sweet portrayal of a sex scene, while the second song really serves its purpose of depicting the happy times the family goes through at a certain point.Another small letdown is the final scene which I understand was meant to be more of a joke, but it could have been easily cut, since the actual conclusion was really satisfying.Final verdict: watch this one, you'll be surprised, in a good way!

Don't expect the movie to be frightening or scary in any way. One of the best aspect of the movie is that the story line keeps you apprehension level high and makes you expect a scary scene, but there are hardly any. A thriller that can be watched as a time-pass movie but don't expect anything extraordinary. I also did not expect romantic songs in between.. totally unasked for! There are some scenes which are usually shown in psycho thrillers, but not enough to entice the audience to think it is. The suspense is maintained until the end - one more good point, but is revealed in a typical Bollywood style. In conclusion, the movie is successful at grasping the audience's attention, but never gives them anything extraordinary. Hope people living on 13th floor don't get nightmares though!
