Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Too much of everything
A brilliant film that helped define a genre
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Those ILLEGALS are working because they are stealing jobs from Americans. Who the heck do you think were working at all these jobs before the Mexicans came? Americans , that's who. Those jobs did not just suddenly pop up when Mexicans started sneaking into our country and no one wanted to do the work. They ARE NOT doing jobs that Americans will not do. They are into anything that pays them. Drywall, painting, roofing, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, fast food, automotive, etc, etc. Some of the women work at cleaning homes and steal the home owners blind. They bring their children with them and feed them right from the home owners fridge. I have heard of one in my area that demanded that the homeowner buy a crib for her child so she could clean the house. Needless to say she was fired right then. My wife cleans homes and is cleaning a few homes that had Mexican women working for them before her and the homeowner said they were stealing and not very good at cleaning and would clean only a few hours while the homeowner was away and claimed they worked all day. These jobs existed long before the Mexicans came here. So how did the jobs exist if no Americans would do that type of work????? Doing work that America will not do is a lie. Let them prove that statement. Americans are out of work because of these people stealing their job by telling employers that they will work for them cheaper than Americans. Then the anti-American employers hire them. Do not believe the Democrat excuse for the illegals staying here. They just want their vote at the expense of American workers.
From the question what would Americans do without mexicans to do the jobs they perform? was born this movie (and form a documentary that director Arau did about the same subject). The premise might be good, but the doing goes all the way wrong, and for many reasons. Un día sin mexicanos starts OK, but once it downhill nothing can stop it. From the acting to the inevitable cliché and the soap opera twists, this is a train wreck. Besides, it never decides whether to be a comedy, a farsic documentary, a prolatino manifesto or a sci-fi experience. This film just engross the list of movies that goes just halfway through. Even reality show elements are throwed in the mix, maybe in an attempt to make a better point on its self proclaimed parody, or maybe because it ran out of ideas. It doesn't matter how willing you try to get into it, its own production values take you out in a flat second. This film just fall short to the what if? premise.
Astoundingly racist stereotypes -- hot-tempered construction workers, airheaded media personalities, a soundtrack in which the recurring refrain is "Cinco de mayo!" sung sarcastically -- abound, the director's contempt for his audience is smugly splashed across the screen with insulting subtitles (e.g., "Guatemala and Honduras are not from Mexico!" -- just in case you didn't get the the mind-blowingly stupid joke of a US senator complaining about "Mexicans from Guatemala and Honduras") -- and that's just the first four minutes or so. Move over, "Bad Lieutenant" and "Making Love": I think I've just found my new Worst Movie of All Time...if only I could bear to watch the remaining 96 minutes.
This was one of those movies that is even mediocre at being bad. It's just a fluff of nonsense. It tries to shove some corny ideology down your throat. I agree with a lot of the other reviews here. It should have been funny! This would be funny maybe to some 10 year old kid in the barrio. And that's a big, big maybe. I'm doubting even that. I was expecting more out of it. I sat there for 1hr+ and all I saw was a silly whine-fest that was far from clever.Everything in the movie, from the plot to the characters, is ridiculous. I've seen Saturday morning cartoons with more personality than this. What was the point to this whole movie? It sure was not entertainment. Let's get serious. The material should at least be entertaining when it's trying to sell you some asinine propaganda.
